Door Latch problems of the 1996 Dodge Caravan - part 1

Rear doors on vehicle will not open from the inside. Driver's side door was repaired, but the problem persists. Door lever links were replaced in the repaired driver's side door. Dealer and manufacturer had been informed of the problem.

Consumer states that vehicle's sliding doors doesn't shut all the way, and doors will not open. Dealer notified. Please provide additional information. Ts.

Latch tore in half at rubber compound.

Dual sliding door on driver's side is inoperable, does not open from either inside or outside. Door latches itself and will not unlatch. Consumer has yet to contact dealer.

While driving down the highway hit a bump in road, and door latch came open. Instrument panel indicated that the door was a ajar and everything else. Back door could not close. Contacted dealer and manufacturer. Was not able to find the problem.

The design of both the driver side/ passenger side sliding door locks from the inside / outside cause an occupant to be trapped in the vehicle, resulting in a failure.

The automatic door locks on both rear sliding doors failed two times each. Three times they failed in the unlocked position and van could not be secured - a major safety hazard since the doors could not be manually locked (e. G. , theft). Other failed in the locked position and could not be manually unlocked. When fixed by dealer, dealer noted that this is a common problem. Recommend requiring recall. Fyi - I am a safety engineer for the us army.

Driver's side slifing door was working fine. Then on 1/24/99 we tried to open door to get my son out of his car seat, but the door would not open. It seemed like it was still locked. So my husband unlocked it again with the key. It still would not open. On 1/28/99, I took the car to a bertera dealer in palmer, MA (closer to home,) and they checked the fuel door safety mechanism and it was ok. So they called Chrysler corp and was informed that sometimes the lock activator seizes up. The entire inside door panel must be removed to fix the problem. Possibly need to replace the part if broken.

Both back door latches broke and needed replacing within a 1 month period.

Consumer's sliding door of right side does not work properly. Sometimes he can open from outside and not from the inside, other times it's just the opposite.

While driving at or about 65 mph the passenger's side sliding door became ajar. Manufacturer contacted, is willing to replace the locks on the door. The locks have been repaired/replaced five times before this incident occurred.

Driver's side sliding door continues to come off and door lock continues to be faulty. Will unlock at times and not latch or close correctly. Dealer contacted, and repairwork attempted approximately five times. Problem still exists. Provide further information.

Sliding door locks: door locks stick and break. The doors jam shut which makes the door unable to open. Locks has been replaced three times on this vehicle. Dealers don't know why this continues to happen.

The sliding doors on both sides are frozen in the locked position, preventing us from exiting.

Sliding door latch failure while driving vehicle, the door was locked, at speed of 55mph, the door came open.

While driving the right side sliding door came unlatched, causing the door to open.

# pe96038, the sliding door sometimes you can unlock it, but couldn't not open it, can open from the inside . Consumer states the locking mechanism began acting up in July, sometimes door would not unlock fully and would have to be unlocked again, finally the door lock assembly froze and the door could not be opened from the outside at all, dealer repaired under warranty, however it is beginning to develop the same problems as before.

Latch on outside of passenger's side sliding door jammed, cannot open from outside, opens only from inside.

Purchased truck new, the sliding door sometimes willl open from the inside and wouldn't open from the outside . Please describe .

Consumer has been experiencing sliding door latch failure since purchasing vehicle in June of 96.
