The gen iii hemi has an inherent design flaw in which the rollers making contact with the camshaft will fail, causing damage to the camshaft and causing the engine to misfire. This is due to the camshaft being moved away from the crankshaft as it causes oil starvation. After extensive research it appears to affect cars of various miles and workload. There is no single cause that makes this happen other than a grievous design flaw. The main complaint is that you experience total power loss at higher revs, making it dangerous to drive on the interstate or attempting to merge into traffics as the engine begins to shudder and lose most power. Whether it’s 40k miles or 110k miles, the flaw does not discriminate. After numerous attempts to reach Chrysler technical service on how to prevent this, I’ve been ignored and case numbers deleted. Now this is very important. This causes a misfire which not only destroys catalytic converters, but arrives with no notice. It’s very possible someone may be attempting to pass someone on the interstate and suddenly lose power. My mechanic inspected it and confirmed that the rollers failed, causing causing lifters to not make proper clearance. This needs to be investigated as this engine is in millions of cars. And even if 1% of these failure occur on an interstate, the potential for fatalities is absolutely nothing to ignore. I kindly ask that this matter be investigated. As not everyone can afford the 5k to fix this problem like I can. And due to its high prevalence in trucks, this could cause those who use their trucks for work to be put in a tight spot. I understand normal wear and tear, but by no means should a cam and valve train fail this soon in a car. Giving the gen iii hemi by Chrysler and their infamous timing chain defect, I believe this is also a dangerous flaw and something Chrysler ignored. Hoping it would outlast warranties. Best regards.

3 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2019

Car has stalled several times while driving above 60 mph. Seems like loses power and fuel pump shuts off. Had to pull over and restarts with no issues. Kind of dangerous when you lose power to brakes and steering too.

4 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2019

2014 timing belt was recalled and apparently repaired. Car shut off in the middle of the highway and then engine seized. Had it towed and service said it was timing belt again and now engine needed to be replaced. Called Dodge, they said there is nothing they can or want to do.

5 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2019

A recall was performed in 2015 regarding a timing chain failure. This car sat in a dealer lot for an extended period of time. I purchased the vehicle and rarely drive it. A timing chain failure stalled me in the middle of the interstate. A chronic issue according to most forums, even after the recall was performed. The car has less than 73,000 miles on it and should not have failed regardless of months,of the fact that it was more than 24 months. It is a very low mileage car for the year and this is on ongoing issue from these vehicles from 2009-2012.

6 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2018

Accelerated / stuck to floor going down highway. Would not shut off. The throttle was stuck would not release. This happened while we were passing another vehicle.

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2018

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Challenger. The contact experienced difficulty with shifting to and from second gear, and the vehicle overheated and stalled several times without warning. An independent mechanic replaced the transmission seals, but was unable to determine a remedy to provide a permanent solution. The failure continued to progress and the vehicle was towed to martin Dodge Jeep Chrysler ram (2209 scottsville rd, bowling green, ky 42104-4105, (270) 846-0600) to be diagnosed. The contact mentioned that the dealer replaced the computer once, but the computer failed again and needed to be replaced. The contact stated that further diagnostic testing was required and the part may no longer be available to replace the computer again. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 54,000.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2017

Hello! hard shifting 6speed manual: I have been having shifting problems with my manual trans for a couple of months. It started back in Nov 11 when traveling out of town, got stuck in traffic and clutch started to not disingauge all the way (would creep) had to hold foot on brake or put in neutral even after pulling off the road. Latter when coming home baked into parking space turn key off wanted to put in other gear was very hard to pull out of reverse. Has gotten worse, it is getting harder to shift while driving. My wife went to get on the highway and had very hard time going into lower gear almost getting hit in the rear. Dodge says worn clutch, but it doesn't slip, but they have a notice about grease being on input spline thats the clutch slides on getting dirty from to much grease and dirt, making the disc stick not fully disengaging. This is a manufacturing defect, assembling line defect not mine. Been to two dealers and ask 4 about the problem.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2015

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Challenger. While driving at 70 mph, the vehicle stalled while trying to accelerate and the transmission warning signal illuminated. When the vehicle was restarted, the warning signal light was not illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The result was a p0730-improper gearing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 35,500.

10 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2014

Have a 2010 Dodge Challenger with less than 40,000 miles. Took car to shop at Dodge dealership due to the fact that my check engine light was on (at 38,000 miles). After not diagnosing my car correctly on 3 separate occasions, they finally "determined" that the car needed a new power module, and several engine sensors were faulty and not working.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2013

Traveling uphill-slight incline- at approx. 55 mph on canyon road when engine light came on, flashed. Then all dash light indicators came on as engine failed. Coasted off to side of the road, where I was stranded with no cell service. Able to get help from a Chrysler service rep who happened to have a computer for diagnostic purposes. Computer indicated "cam shaft sensor failure". Rep advised remove sensor, look to see if "gear" turns when engine is cranked. If gear turned then timing chain ok, and it was just a bad sensor. If gear didn't turn then the timing chain broke. Vehicle towed home and sensor removed. Gear didn't turn when engine cranked, so the vehicle was then towed to dealer. Dealer confirmed timing chain broke- also damaged several valves. Covered under power train warranty at the moment.

12 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2013

Was driving on 4th of July for a holiday celebration. Shifted from 3rd to 4th gear at 35 mph and the shifter handle broke off. I had to very carefully turn around and drive home with this broken shifter handle. At one point the handle came out of the mount and I had to find the hole again for the shift handle with the dust boot obscuring my view while driving. Since it was a holiday weekend I decided this was a time to replace the shifter handle with the hurst shifter handle supplied by Dodge as a part of my auto purchase using mopar bucks. After I installed this stronger shifter/handle I took my car in to the dealer to show them the obvious safely hazard from the broken shifter handle. The dealer took this opportunity to ridicule me and make it appear that I must have done something wrong to break a part like this. I asked them to contact Dodge to notify them of a safety hazard and they would not do this. They told me my vehicle was out of warranty and there was nothing they could do. I believe the weak alloy in Dodge original manufacturer shift handles should be removed from production and replaced with stronger steel like the shift handle supplied with hurst shifters. I believe the engineers at Dodge need to know these parts are breaking from regular use. This is a safely hazard. I have the broken shift handle for inspection if anybody in interested.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2013

While making a right hand turn at about 5-10 mph, car stalled. Resulting in no power steering, poor brakes, and almost getting rear ended.

14 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2013

Driving on the freeway home late from work at 65 mph, without warning, the engine stopped. No power, no power steering, no power brakes. Put car in neutral to try and restart: would turn over not start. Had to get to the right shoulder expeditiously and was stuck there w/ a concrete barrier to my right. Car would not start, with 18 wheeler big rigs blowing by me at 65 mph stuck in the car. Extreme danger. Had to get it towed 16 mi. To dealer at 8:30 pm. Extreme safety issue to me and commuters around me--dead car, no warning, while driving on the freeway. Please address with Chrysler corp. As this is a known extreme safety issue!!! took to dealer and said the timing chain broke. Huh? at 36,500 mi. ??!! completely unsafe and unacceptable. . Read more...

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2013

My 2010 Dodge Challenger r/t roughly sat for 2-3 winter months, driven 2-3 times during that period. While starting it up in February the car started then stalled out. I turned the key back to off and then restarted the car. I was getting on to the highway making a right turn. After completing the turn, merging on the highway about 35-40mph the car stalled and I had to pull off to the side of the road. I restarted and continued to drive as normal for the rest of the day. On Friday March 29th 2013, I started the car and it stalled again. I restarted the car and went on my way to work. I was merging from one highway to another doing about 40-45mph on the onramp when the car stalled again. Luckily I was able to pull off to the median while 3 cars almost rear ended me since I had no power to the vehicle. I put it in park, restarted the car and went on my way. That same morning, I was going south bound on the high way in the middle of mourning rush hour traffic into the city. I was going between 65-75mph in heavy traffic in the high speed lane and the car stalled again and lost all power to the vehicle. After coasting for about 100 yards the car somehow restarted, power came back and I continued to work that morning. I have taken the care to the local Dodge dealership as of 3/31 and is being looked at to find the issue.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2013

While driving at highway speed the vehicle made a pop sound and lost power. I was forced off the highway as there were no shoulders and had to push the vehicle across traffic to safety. The timing chain tensioner failed, resulting in the timing chain breaking. This resulted in damage to the upper portion of the motor, including all intake and exhaust valves, marring on the pistons and cracked heads.

17 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2012

While driving my 2010 Challenger rt 4. 7l hemi on the CA 15 freeway at 70 mph the car suddenly shut down. The warning lights for engine and oil came on and I had to coast to a stop. Steering and brakes remained operational and luckily I made it to the shoulder as the 15 freeway is extremely busy and fast. I had the car towed to a nearby Dodge dealer where they informed me that my plastic timing chain guides had disintegrated and caused a blown engine. The car repairs (rebuilt engine) were covered under the 100k mile powertrain warranty but took 4 weeks to complete. The car had 54k freeway miles on it when this happened, was regularly maintained, and never showed any indications that a severe issue would have been forthcoming. I now question the longevity of the new rebuilt engine as same timing chain assembly parts were used during the repair. Noticed there is at least one other identical report on the NHTSA website so reported on my incident.

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2012

Shifting issue with manual 2010 Challenger r/t. Experiencing a nibble when shifting and sometimes it won't shift into 3rd when cold. Matches the description from other 2009-2010 drivers in on-line Challenger forums under star case # k38556860 & s1021000004 (bad grease used on tr-6060. My local dealer and Chrysler warranty hotline claim to know nothing about it.

19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2011

I've had the same issue as many have described when your Challenger loses all power steering and braking ability while making a right turn at low speeds. Luckily I was pulling into a car wash when this happened and not at my sons elementary school where the deadly potential of killing school kids was there. . . By the way I was on the way to pick up my kid when I made a last minute choice to get a quick wash. So as stated by everyone else here, put the car in park an was able to start right back up afterwards. Not knowing this was an issue that others were having, I opened the hood and started looking for lose cables or popped caps and such and finding nothing. Also prior to turning the car off I jumped into the hidden epic menus and took pictures of the important data such as chime codes, ccn software version just in case there might be an update. I noticed the oil pressure was at 0!!! after everything was back to working I check the same detail and it was at a normal 25psi. So took car into Dodge and as normal, "we couldn't find anything and there are no issues that I know. We also couldn't reproduce it. " really? you couldn't reproduce an issue that I told you appears to be random from all the other people that have had this happen? it's like they just don't give two [xxx] about people's lives? so I'll call corporate tomorrow and see how much they don't care either. By the way, this is the first time for me and I was at 17,250 miles. Car model is the rt automatic. Let's hope we can get them to fix this before people get killed. 20 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2011

The vehicle stalled after braking at around 15 mph. The vehicle was able to be restarted, but unable to shift into gear. As mentioned by many others, this is a severe safety risk and needs to be looked into. My vehicle was towed to dealer and an ecm flash was conducted, but I am afraid of this issue reoccuring like so many others.

21 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2011

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Challenger. The contact stated that the second gear shift would pop out of gear, causing sudden acceleration. The contact crashed into storage unit as a result of the failure. The contact sustained a fractured toe and leg injuries, and was transported to the hospital. The front and left side of the vehicle was damaged and the vehicle was towed to a body shop. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was contacted and an inspector was sent to inspect the failure of the vehicle. The claim was denied after inspection. The failure mileage was 13,400.

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2011

This is the second time in less than 30 days that the challanger r/t has shut off while making a turn at speeds of 25 mph or less. Reference odi id # 10421234 / incident date of 08/19/2011. Wife was making a left hand turn off of a busy street (40 mph speed limit, into my home neighborhood) when the car suddenly dies, steering & brakes go hard, oil pressure light illuminates, and she had to coast to a stop, put the car in park, press the start button (even though dash message said "key fob not found"), car re-starts, and she continued 1/2 mile to our home. I'm not comfortable letting my wife or kids drive this car when the probability of it dying is very possible. I just drove the car up the narrow mountain passes to big bear, CA (8,000 ft elevation) & back 3 days ago, and this could have caused a major accident if it had died and I had lost control on a windy mountain road. How many people have to be injured or die before someone forces Dodge / Chrysler to identify & correct this problem. Car is going to the dealership tomorrow morning, where I expect to get alot of nothing, but atleast my complaints will be intered into the service system.

23 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2011

Making a left hand turn through an intersection (less than 20 mph) when car stalls, oil light illuminates, and power steering & brakes become almost unusable. Had to stop the car completely, put car in park, push the start button, and continue on to my destination. This is the 1st time this has occurred.

24 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Challenger. The contact stated that while driving approximately 9 to 12 mph, he attempted to accelerate further, but the vehicle would not respond. After a few moments, the vehicle jerked into fourth gear. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 9,000 and the current mileage was 11,300.

25 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2010

2010 srt8 Challenger stalls after running highway speeds (70-80 mph) on slow down as to get off a exit ramp, or to turn into a rest stop, gas station. Proper speed to gear ratio assumed. Clutch fully suppressed or while moving. Also stalls on take off (traffic light, stop sign) in rolling condition, again proper speed to gear ratio assumed. Identifiers: low oil light, no steering, all the bells and whistles of a stalled vehicle. Sometimes will start immediately sometimes not. Dealer states no codes no issues.

26 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2010

2010 Dodge Challenger r/t automatic transmission. While turning right car stalls and completely shuts off requiring the car to be put into park and restarted. Fortunately on both occasions my wife was not rear ended. This is the second time this has occurred since owning the car. Dealership was "unable to duplicate" the issue and no fix is known. Srt engineers have stated in online forums that they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. While researching this issue I found that this is a problem with several Dodge vehicle models, based on the number of owners posting stories about this same issue.

27 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2010

The car stalls without any warning. I have had it stall in traffic and at intersections and have almost been hit a few times. This has happened about a dozen times in the 4500 miles on the car. It is very scary. The dealer has had the car for over two weeks with no end in sight. The last occurrence was on the 13th of August. The car sometimes will not move after it is restarted and must be turned on and off a few times before it will drive.

28 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Challenger. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was restarted after a considerable amount of time and the failure recurred numerous times. Each time the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis but no cause for failure was determined. The manufacturer was notified and they dispatched a mechanic, who rebuilt the transmission and replaced two of the computers. The failure recurred six months later. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 7,000 and the current mileage was 51,000.
