1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2024

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated that after taking the vehicle to an independent mechanic to have the catalytic converter replaced, the vehicle stalled while driving at various speeds. There was no warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, the contact had to have the vehicle towed to the residence on nine separate occasions. The vehicle was also towed to a dealer, where the pcm was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to the sentry key immobilizer module (skim). The contact believed that a defect with the skim had caused the sudden stall with the security light flashing. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 119,000.

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2020

The gauges would stop working. Seems there was no communication cmt and I had the emc checked and it was fine. It only costs $90 to have it checked out. Seems there are a number of complaints in regard to this failure.

3 Electrical System problem

The vehicle was not taken to a dealership to have a diagnostic performed. The manufacturer was not contact. The failure mileage was 160,000. Li.

4 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2018

Computer control of headlights, interior and dash lighting, and possibly the abs system and the intermittent wiper control are affected. Without warning these systems either failed or became erratic. Vehicle exhibits these malfunctions both stationary and in motion, and at all speeds. It is apparently not an uncommon issue, as per information available on the internet. The (temporary?) fix is to disconnect the battery for 15+ minutes, possible cause: the computer connectors.

5 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated that the instrument cluster lights, windshield wipers, headlights, signal lights, and door locks stopped working without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the central control timing module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact opened case number: 30176046 and was placed on a waiting list for parts. The contact received an email stating that the part was no longer being made as of 2011. The contact located a dealer that had the part in stock, but was informed that the part was on freeze by the manufacturer. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 89,000.

6 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2016

4wd selector switch blinking and unable to go into 4wd modes, door locks open and close randomly at any speed, 4wd drive light on at dash, no air blowing for ac or heat.

7 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2015

I was driving down the road and while my heat was on and I lost two fan speeds, after further inspection I found my resistor was melted, and so were two wires. Now I currently lost another speed and have only level 2 for heat and air conditioning.

Failure Date: 10/16/2010

Movement of tilt steering wheel in lower half of range will cause short-circuit of turn signal operation. Left and right turn signal will be inoperative. Radio circuit also affected. Movement back into upper half of range will correct problem.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2010

In traffic going down the road at 65 mph, the dashboard caved in. Loose pieces everywhere. I didn't know if this had affected the electronics or not at the time. I just had to pull over and cut through three lanes of traffic. Luckily so far, just some minor electrical problems here and there. I am scared this will affect the airbag system later on. Dodge says there is no recall on this. Very unfortunate, last Dodge I will ever own.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2010

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated the doors would lock independently. The windshield wipers would engage independently and the interior lights would sporadically flicker on and off. The contact found that the central timer module was burned and partially melted. In addition, the contact stated he has had to replace the blower motor resister board four times because it had burned. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 112,000 and the current mileage was 123,000. Updated 11/03/10. Updated 11/19/10.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2006

I am the original owner of a 2001 Dodge quad cab dashboard is almost completely gone from cracking. Had a piece come off as I was driving, and hit me in the eye while windows were open. . Called d/c once, no response. . Called today, and they said they would look at it for me. . Report from local tv showed this to be a major problem. The electrical components are failed.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2005

Bought a 2001 Dodge quad cab sport 4x4 in 2003. The dash had a small crack on the drivers side at time of purchase. The crack spread rapidly to all areas of the dashboard. I used protectants, adhesives and dashboard shades and a dash pad to prevent further spread to no avail. During one evening trip,I hit a bump in the road and the entire dash caved in causing the instrument cluster to lose lighting. I had to collect all the extremely sharp shards of plastic out of the dashboard recess to look for the problem. It was during this incident that a extremely sharp piece of plastic cut deep into my right hand. I should have gotten stitches, but used gauze and wrap until healed. What would have happened if the airbag was deployed with loose plastic parts flying all over the place? survive the crash and then die from massive lacerations from broken dash pieces? I contacted multiple local Dodge dealers and was told that they knew and corporate knew of the problem, but they would not replace it because Dodge corporate would not authorize or pay for the obvious manufacturing defect. I probably will never buy a Dodge again. Dodge knew this was a big problem, but did and still does not care. Almost every Dodge I've seen within the 2000-2003 years has this blaring problem. Some have replaced the dash with aftermarket parts or just try to cover it up with dash pads or mats. Does the NHTSA care? has this massive issue even looked into?.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2005

My truck has 31000 miles and has been having mysterious intermittent electrical problems since I bought it in Aug 2001. Originally it was limited to the door locks locking and unlocking by themselves at all times - when the vehicle is running, and when it is not. Also had problems with the tail lights working erratically. I took the vehicle in at least two times, and both times the dealer said they could not "duplicate" the problem, and they could find nothing wrong. The problem continued intermittently over the next two years until this month the electrical system went completely haywire - the lights , locks, wipers, dash lights all quit working, and the 4wd service light came on and it would not go into 4wd (all of this conveniently after the warranty period expired 4 months ago). I took the truck in and they said the "control module" was bad and that it would cost $500 to fix. When I explained that this is just another in a series of electrical problems that have been occurring throughout the warranty period, and that I thought it should be covered under the warranty, I was told there was no way to determine if it was the same problem, and that I had to pay for the repair. My problems seem to be very similar to some of the probelms in defect investigation #s 10072859, 10018654, and 10106547.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2004

My 2001 Dodge Dakota truck has experienced the failure of its power control module (pcm) not once but twice in 2004. The original unit failed 57,500 miles and the second unit failed at just 7,000 miles. Pcm failure means that electric power is cut unexpectedly to the engine leading to engine failure. In my case this happened once on a narrow hilly roadway and the second time in the fast lane of a freeway. Such failure do not provide warnings and happen suddenly and unexpectedly. In both cases loosing power also meant loosing braking and power steering. While neither incident resulting in accidents for me, they could easily have (part luck & part skill). Yet I have seen little regarding this matter. What is so sinister about this is that the "bug" is difficult to trace because it re-appears only randomly (initially I thought that I needed a tune-up or had received bad batch of fuel). There is no maintenance required of this unit and it has a warranty of 8/80,000. I have written to Dodge regarding this matter requesting, among other things, an explanation of why these units failed and the hazards such failures place the driver and fellow motorists into. The manufacturer has responded but only in regard to the matter of reimbursement for car rental related to the second incident above where I was on a trip. Nothing has been responded to with regard to the "reliabilty" of the units. The incident date below is the initial situation.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2004

I was stopped at a red light and decided to put my headlights on bright in order to see further down the road. When I hit the dimmer, the lights went completely out and would not come back on until the switch was operated several times. After this, I always left my lights on dim for safety reasons. Finally went to a junk yard and pulled a replacement dimmer, which solved the problem, I hope.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2004

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota club cab 4. 7l v8 4x4 with an electrical issue. After the vehicle is running for about 20 minutes, all lights begin to flash. It starts out a few times a minute, then they proceed to flash continuously. After about 30 minutes of driving at night, they are flashing to a point that makes it extremely difficult to drive. This includes the headlights, interior lights, and dash lights. Once the vehicle is turned off, the lights continue to flash. If the vehicle is off for an extended period of time, the problem will go away, then return after driving for another 20 minutes. I have researched the issue and found that there are others with this type of issue.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2003

2001 Dodge ram 1500 pickup has cracked dashboard. Started about 2 years after I bought the truck new. Still has new cracks developing. Some cracks extend into passenger airbag compartment and into driver's instrument panel. Installed carpeted dashboard cover to help prevent the cracks from progressing but they still remain to increase in size. Appears that whenever the a/c or heater is used the cracks extend and can be heard audible. The rapid change in interior temperature when using the a/c or heater can cause the cracks to quickly extend. Have to slowly increase temperature to reduce the failure rate. Have tried everything to prevent the cracks but nothing helps. Concerned now about the airbag compartment being comprised and leading to premature airbag deployment. The dashboard appears to very brittle and every precaution is used not to place any weight on dashboard. Over the years, several cracks have appeared and dashboard is developing new ones. Some cracks now extend into the dashboard trim that attach to the main dashboard. Dodge is aware of the problem but refuse to do anything about it. Cost is very expensive to replace. At this time, passenger airbag is turned off as a Dodge mechanic advised me to do since the airbag might accidentally deploy due to a major crack into airbag compartment.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2003

While driving , the consumer pulled the headlight switch, and discovered the did not work. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and it was diagnosed the central timer module had to be replaced.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2003

Currently my Dodge Dakota is being serviced at town and country Dodge for the 12th time for the blower motor going out since I purchased it in September 2000. I have had other possibly related issues-hvac control lights going out, headlight accessory panel going out, door alarm malfunctioning, and cigarette lighter inoperable. The truck has been in the shop for approximately 56 cumulative days for the above listed issues. Cannot defrost / defog windows without blower motor. No heat in the winter. No air-conditioning in the summer - not even the fan works to circulate air. At times the problem is intermittent - leaving me stranded when its raining/snowing. Vehicle is completely unpredictable even though the dealership has "fixed" it (for sure this time) 11 times prior to me dropping it off today.

23 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2002

I have a 2001 Dodge ram 1500 ext cab that I bought new from the dealership. At 42,000mi the dash had a crack in the center. I took it back to the dealership but they said it was out of warranty and to use something with uv protection. At 101,000mi the front speakers went out. Now my dash is missing big pieces. I was driving down the road last month and hit a bump in the road. A piece of dash flew up and hit my wife in the forehead. She will no longer let the grandchildren ride in my truck. She is afraid the air bag will go off or a piece of dash will hit them in the eye. Now the front lights have blinked on and off 2 or 3 times on separate occasion. I've called Dodge and they sent me to a service center. They agreed to replace the dash, instrument cover and glove box all which have cracked. But now I have to pay 580. 00$. My tax dollars bailed them out and now I have to pay for their defected parts? this is a danger to drivers.
