1 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2023

This vehicle will slip in and out 4 wheel drive on its own. This can occur when driving and I’m concerned it will create a dangerous situation, especially if driving at high speeds. When this issue is occurring, making tight turns (parking, neighborhood driving) becomes very dangerous as the wheels become locked and you have to press the accelerator down creating a lot of power and the vehicle becomes dangerously uncontrollable. This is very common while parking, when often pedestrians are present and the vehicle becomes unpredictable due to this issue. This will also occur at a 2 way stop when turning right in front of on-coming traffic. The vehicle will again be unpredictable and can’t turn smoothly impairing traffic coming from behind.

Was on a delivery order with doordash suddenly the truck started bucking back and forth it had felt as if someone was slaming into the back of truck anyway I was on the highway in traffic when this had started leaving me 1st and 2nd gear than final with no gears cause the transmission was burning hot to the touch causing burns on my hand when I tried to check out I was told my truck went into some kind of limp mode cause of transmission control module and shifted solenoid a on the transmission someone needs to hold Dodge responsible for its failures.

3 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2023

My 2005 Durango all of a sudden has decided to stall while driving . I've bought this vehicle almost 2 years ago, and this is by far the scariest experience I've had in it. The first time it happened was as I was slowing down to stop at a red light on January 17th. Since then it has been stalling one at least 3 to 5 times a week . Something isn't right. I did receive a code from my milewise ins obd reader today, that said p1794 urgency unknown - contact your mechanic . That's one of 3 I got . The other two are p 0700 transmission control system ( mil request ) urgent - have checked ASAP and - p0430 catalyst system efficiency below threshold. Urgent - have checked ASAP this tells me something is seriously wrong and it's going to cost me a fortune. Which for me is impossible to even try to contemplate. I am disabled and my income is not enough. I can not afford to fix this, nor can I afford to buy something else. This is a real problem that I can't afford and it should have been fixed before when it was brought to your attention back in 2005.

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2021

I have had problems with the 4 wheel/ all wheel drive engaging on it's own. The problem exists even when the vehicle is turned off when using the key fob to lock the vehicle. I have on a two occasions have the transmission shift into four wheel low while doing over 55 mph which made the vehicle slow down skidding drastically and made the engine hit high rpms. After checking online for some information I've found that it's a problem with many owners of 2004, 2005 and 2006 Durango and dakota owners and found that the body control module, 4 wheel module and shift actuator was part of the faults. They had disconnected the wire harness to the shift actuator to remedy the chance of having an accident. I have done the same and looked into replacing faulty parts but also found that the fix was also temporary many owners reported the same problem just days after repairs. Please look into this, it's dangerous and it's well known that this problem exists with many owners why has mopar not addressed it. It will kill someone.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2020

Vehicle has started to automatically shift into 4 wheel drive when driving. Will sometimes automatically shift into 4 lock and sometimes into 4 low. This causes the vehicle to rapidly decelerate and swerve due to the 4 wheel drive engaging. The vehicle will also automatically engage and disengage 4 wheel drive when off. There are countless descriptions of this on the internet for this particular vehicle. Some of them resulting in near mishaps. My vehicle is at 122,000 miles and has been regularly maintained.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2020

So I was driving to work and going about 60 mph and the 4wheel drive engaged and almost caused a major accident on the freeway. I went on the Dodge website and it seems that everyone that owns this type of vehicle had the same thing happen to them. So its not just a random thing that happened. This is a serious problem and it could end up costing someone's life. Right after it happened it made a loud noise then went back to 2wheel drive. Then the lights on the vehicle for the 4wheel hi and low was going haywire. Then like nothing it turned off. And the car drove great. But as I went further down the highway it did it again about 3 more time so I parked it. I. Waited a couple hours went to open the door and the car started making noises as if it was engaging ad disengaging the 4 wheel drive. I called the Dodge dealer and they have no clue what to do. This is clearly a malfunctioning drive train and every other person who owned a 2005 Dodge Durango 4 wheel drive has the same exact problem. This is a great car but this malfunction needs to be addressed.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2018

About 2 weeks ago, my 4lo light would blink and then go off, and then my svc 4wd light would go on for about 4min. I took it into my mechanic, he could not find anything. Today, as I was backing out of my driveway - with my 3 kids, all my wheels locked up and I could not drive it. Mind you, I am in the middle of the street now. When I got out of my car I could hear my car trying to shift from 4lo/4hi/awd. I had to call my husband to come home to get my car off the street. In looking up this matter online, there seems to be alot of issues with this and seems to be a huge safety issue when you're talking about your car shifting from awd to 4lo or 4hi - thankfully, I was not on the highway going 55. We were able to get it to the mechanic and you can hear it trying to shift when the vehicle is off - no key or anything - wow! mechanic said I was very lucky. I would highly suggest someone looking into this issue, it seems to be a pretty widely known issue.

19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2017

Was driving at a low rate of speed making a left turn into a parking spot and heard a huge clunk as if I hit a pot hole then the car became very sluggish as if something was slowing it down. I thought maybe I blew a tire so I got out and looked but the tires were fine. I then backed into the parking spot then drove forward a little and it seemed fine. I put it in park and turned off the ignition, then heard like an air compressor noise letting out air. It stopped after a few seconds. When I came out of the store it drove fine but the svc 4wd light came on, then back off. When I am travelling at lower rates of speed the light intermittently comes on and off and I haven't heard the clunk again but just now as I was making a left again at a slow speed the car came almost completely to a stop.

When turning and driving at slow speeds, wheels lock up like brakes are on, not letting car move. Has on occasion when driving at speeds of 40 to 55, transmission does not go into overdrive. Of all the complaints I've read, I wish Dodge would admit they have a problem. I don't want this to lock up at highway speeds. Thank you.

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

I vehicle likes to turn its 4 wheel drive on while I am making turns. Also when it is parked you can hear the 4 wheel drive system making clicking noises. This happens when the vehicle is turned off and the key is not in the ignition. I have read thousands of complaints about this same problem. I see that some people have spent thousands of dollars to fix this problem and it does not. Some people have stated while driving on a highway or road it has kicked in and caused traffic accidents, some serious and some minors. When will this problem be addresses? will it take someone dying to get an investigation started? I have had this problem for a couple of years and thank god, nothing has happen to me or my family when this issues happens.

23 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2017

I bought this Durango used. I looked up recalls before I bought it to make sure nothing really bad was an issue. 2 days after I bought it it started shifting into 4 high and 4 low by itself, while I was driving. Fortunately it did not shift into 4 low while I was at high speeds, but it did it once while I was pulling out of a parking lot at about 10 mph and could have caused an accident very easily since I came to a complete stop, had to put it in neutral, play with the shift knob to get it back into awd. After that I went home. When it is parked and off, you can hear the tranfer case actuator shifting into 4 wheel drive in and out on its own. I did some research and unplugged the actuator until I can get this resolved so that I can safely drive this vehicle. This needs to be a recall, I have read hundreds of reports just like mine. It is a very common problem with this vehicle, and it is very dangerous unless the actuator is unplugged so that it cannot shift. The dealerships don't know how to fix it. Some of the reports I read, the owner has spent thousands, and still the problem persists! that is why I have not attempted to fix the problem on my own by replacing any parts.

4lo light blinks or stays on for short periods and the 44 locks for no apparent reason causing the vehicle to jerk and become hard to control in turning and nearly impossible to make a sharp turn until it disengages. This happens in city driving or stopping and starting or on back road driving. It can be fine when I park it and when I unlock get in and start out it may or may not lock into 44 but when it does it becomes extremely difficult to maneuver in tight parking spaces. 34 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2016

Having problems with the 4wd engaging on its own while vehicle sitting after shutoff as well as has shifted automatically from awd into 4wd while driving down the road at 55+mph. . . Totally unsafe. Have seen many complaints for this same issue going on from other Dodge owners for '04 and '05 Dodge caravans for same issue. Appears to be related to faulty chinese manufactured part Dodge was installing and faulting out connections causing power load to not be same power load as original spec (easily corroded wiring) and then screwing up the connection and faulting the unit out to start to shift on its own. Major safety concern if occurring on many different personal over the past 5 yrs histories seen for same vehicle models. When vehicle is shutoff can also hear the 4wd selector clicking / engaging back and forth the 4wd system in / out from awd to 4wd. Vehicle is currently stuck in 4wd lo now.
