general problems of the 2014 Dodge Durango

The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and attempting to accelerate, the transmission was slipping while shifting to second gear, and the vehicle lost motive power and failed to respond with the rpm elevated. The message to “shift to park and restart” was displayed. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 126,000.

When I made it to my home town I went in got gas for my truck and then a few hours later my check engine light came on so I took it to o’reillys and got it checked out they said my second shift wasn’t responding so I took it to Dodge green and they said my transmission went out.

The shift lock mechanism failed to function allowing my vehicle to randomly shift from park to drive causing the vehicle to roll forward into another vehicle.

On November 7th, 2020 while driving on a avenue multiples engine and electrical warning reveal on the vehicle dashboard and all of the sudden the steering wheel got really hard, the check engine light came up, the brakes light, and a message stating "service shifter"; this all happened on a nick of time while I have my whole family in the car, very unsafe.

While traveling on the interstate 80 miles from home the coolant light went off and the temp gauge ran hot. Pulled over and cooled down; lights went off. Pulled up info for a nearby dealership and tried to drive to it . Only got about a mile and lights and gauge went off again. Tried to find a safe space to pull over on interstate; the shoulders are very narrow on i45. When pulled over engine light also came on and I turned engine off and it would not restart. Called tow truck, dealership replaced water pump but then found catastrophic engine damage. Fca knows there's a problem with water pump because they extended the warranty on it but they will not honor warranty on engine because they say I continued to drive with engine light on which I didn't. If water pump had been recalled I never would have had catastrophic engine failure.

July 14, 2019 - while the Dodge Durango is in motion, the dash display suddenly went blank, various sensor lights turned on, transmission gear would not shift, and the wiper blades intermittently turned on. Similarly problem was experienced in may 2019, when the repair shop identified and replaced a faulty bcm (body control module). I took the vehicle to a local Dodge dealership about a month ( June 2019), for the same problem and the dealership identified the wiring harness to be faulty. After some diagnosis, the dealership reset the codes, asked me to drive the vehicle some more to see if the problem reoccurs. It has been a month since I took the vehicle to the dealership and the problem has reoccured several times. I feel this is a real safety issues especially when I have my kids in the car and the electrical issues arises while the vehicle is in motion. This problem is very concerning to me as the problem has occured one time while I was driving on the highway, and three time while driving on city streets. Please investigate this matter urgently as I consider this issue to be a serious vehicle problem or hazard. Any Durango owner and their family could potentially get seriously hurt.

On July 8, 2019, from a stop, light acceleration, the vehicle started hesitating as if it was misfiring or not getting fuel, up and down shifting, hard up shifting and the vehicle would not accelerate. The check engine light started flashing maybe 10 times then stayed off. Cut the vehicle off and restarted and ran as if no problems occured. Contacted dealership to scan the vehicle, they found no engine codes stored in the computer and stated to drive it until the check engine light comes on and stays on, then to bring it in for diagnostics.

My vehicle started making a clicking noise around 65k miles. When I scheduled my routine oil change at my dealership I was told that I needed to have my cam lifter and rocker arms replaced. I explained that this is an issue that should not be happening on a vehicle that is only 5 years old with 65k miles. They told me that this is going to cost me $1,800 to have the repairs made to the vehicle. Then I was told that if I have the 60k mile check up for $800 on the vehicle that Dodge will complete the repairs for free. After doing research online and speaking with other Durango owners I found that this is a known issue with the 2014-2015 Dodge Durango and should be addressed.

I was driving on the freeway during a very bad rainstorm at night on January 16th, 2019. I was traveling around 50 mph on the freeway, in the number three lane, when my car shut off, where I lost complete power to my engine. My speedometer dropped from 50 to 30 mph immediately, leaving me with no power, to barely make it to the emergency lane. No power, no brake, no steering-nothing. My horn was also honking, my headlights flashing, windshield wipers attempting to move but unable to, and speakers making weird noises. And to make things even more scary, my 9 year old son was in the car with me. This is an issue that needs to be investigated, and possibly issue a recall. I feel that I am extremely lucky that my son and myself were not severely injured or even killed, with my car shutting off like that without warning. If I had not been able to cruise to the emergency lane, no doubt we would have been struck at a standstill by oncoming traffic, averaging 50-60 mph. I am extremely concerned, and this is a huge safety issue. I brought the car into the Dodge dealership, where I was told that it was from the rain and it shorted out my electrical. That's it. That's it? there should be a better explanation, and action taken to prevent something like this from ever happening. That car shutting off without warning from 50 mph to 0 mph on a freeway could have cost my son and I our lives. I am expecting to hear back from Dodge regarding this very dangerous problem that occurred, and I have also read about similar complaints with the Durango, so I know this is not a fluke. My 14 Dodge Durango began to make a clicking noise when running. 10/17/17- it was found that the exhaust cam lifters and rocker arms on right side of engine were worn. It was warrantied and replaced. It was replaced again in the summer of 18. I was told the left side would eventually need replaced as well, but they couldn't until it presented a problem. In November of 18 the same noise happened again. It was put in the shop Dec. 26th. It was diagnosed with the same problem(right) and the left. The dealer will fix the right side(for the third time) because it is under warranty. They will not fix the left. My car just went over 100,000. The dealer expressed that he was surprised it was not a recall because this is so common. At this point, the wear happens every six months. I feel it should be under warranty as the very least, or recalled. It is the same problem three times in a little over 1 year.

Hello, I just purchased a 2014 Dodge Durango limited awd w/approximately 30,000 miles. I have had the vehicle for about 3 weeks and on September 4/5th notice huge puddles of oil in our driveway. My wife attempted to drive it that morning, but heard weird noises "sputtering noises" in her own words. Once she told me of the issue, several hours later I started the Durango and heard similar noises. Looking under the vehicle I notice oil on the under carriage of the car stretching maybe 5 feet in length. I called Chrysler roadside assistance and notified them of the issue. They sent over a tow and once the dealership diagnosed the problem, they said it was an oil cooler leak. Upon reading several forums this seems to be a common issue.

The vehicle put itself in reverse after putting it in park. The incident happened twice, once at home in the driveway and another in a target parking lot. I noticed the vehicle started to move after removing my foot from the brake and was able to avoid and incident. I have taken this to a dealership and the tech saw the truck jump into gear while it was sitting idle but since the "flight recorder" was not hooked up, they decided not to do anything about it after it could not be duplicated again. The dealer then denied my second request to look at the vehicle because of the "loaner vehicle policy". This vehicle has a manufacturer buyback also that was not disclosed to me on the date of purchase.

After starting the vehicle in my garage, I needed to go back into the house to get something. I shifted the car to park to exit the vehicle, the vehicle was still running. When I exited the vehicle the car proceeded to roll backwards out of the garage. The garage is on level ground. I attempted to get back into the car to press the brake. After being dragged through the garage I ended up partially under the car, I let go of the car and rolled away not to be ran over by the still moving car. I then got up and ran after the car that was going down my decline driveway. When I got into the moving car I applied the brake and shifted the car from "drive" to "park". There was significant damage done to the drivers side of the car. The garage door/frame was damaged as well. I had injuries that required an ambulance.

Three times the vehicle has been placed in park in my driveway and has popped out of gear sending the vehicle down my driveway. Last night 9/5/16 @ 10pm the vehicle was pulled out of the garage, put in park and left running while I changed light bulbs on my garage door opener. The vehicle made it down my driveway, across my street and started down a hill towards an intersection before I was able to jump in the car (while traveling down a hill with some speed) and lay on the brakes. If someone was behind the vehicle they would be dead. If another car was traveling on my street there would of been a major accident. If I didn't stop the vehicle in time it would of went through a home. Called Dodge this morning and they don't seem real concerned about it.

I drove into a store parking lot, put my Durango in park, the car was still running as my elderly father was in the passenger side and my 15 year old daughter was in the back. When exiting the store after less than 3 minutes in there, I noticed my Durango was now in the middle of the parking lot and my father was in the drivers side. The Durango had moved a good 6-10 feet before my father was able to jump to the other side and stop it by pressing the break. Upon returning home I checked online for other complaints such as this and found that the NHTSA was investigating claims of this same thing happening in 2014 Durango's. This morning I called my dealership and the service guy told me that there was no recall on the 2014 Durango's (only other Dodge vehicles with this same exact problem) he advised me that the could take a look at it but that there was no 'fix' for it. So I will be taking it to the dealership on 7-15-16 for them to 'look' at it. At this point I feel that I have an unsafe vehicle and there is nothing they can do about it!.

We have had at least three instances where the Durango has rolled while parked and transmission is in park. Only luck than no one was injured. In each instance it was in our driveway, parked. While unattended, the vehicle would roll down the driveway into the street, there is a slight grade in our driveway towards the street.

Our Durango will just completely go haywire (display screen, lights - interior, dash, and exterior lights, the 3rd row head rests will automatically go down, doors lock/unlock) and shut down while in motion. All power goes out and the vehicle becomes impossible to regain control.

Backed car out of garage, put in park on inclined driveway to retrieve a forgotten item from house. Was gone for about 1 minute. Upon returning car was across the cul DE sac in the neighbors front yard. Went to neighbors yard to retrieve car and look for damage. Car was still in park as the dial transmission was illuminated to p, but car was no longer running but lights and radio were still on. Cleaned dirt and grass out of tail pipe as it had crashed thru neighbors ditch. Started car and drove back to house, turned off engine and put on emergency break, called husband out of the house to look underneath for damage. Front end damage on the passenger side and also rear bumper damage. Called Dodge and filed claim. Car was taken to local dealer who called Dodge and were advised to check for any gunk or debri in the oil pan, none found so they were advised to drop the transmission and check the components, which resulted in the discovery of a defective valve body. Part was replaced and damaged supposedly fixed. Less than two months later, transmission is slamming from 2nd gear to 3rd gear and large clunk heard when transmission shifts from 2nd gear to first gear, called Dodge and file another claim and taking back to dealer. I have read other complaints about unattended vehicle roll aways for Dodge and Jeep using the same new dial transmission resulting in property damage and minor injuries. I am very concerned that someone may be seriously injured or killed if this is not addressed by Dodge. I do also have this all on video as we have an outdoor security system that I am will to send to anyone who is trying to dispute this same safety issue with Dodge. It is even timed second by second in the footage and you can see every door in my car to prove that no one else was in the car when this happened.

Vehicle was parked at a boat launch in preparation of putting boat on trailer. Car was in park, engine idling. Got out of the car to retrieve boat while partner would drive the car out after boat was trailered. While partner was attempting to get behind the wheel, car suddenly started backing into the lake until submerged. The transmission was still in park until tow truck operator got into the vehicle to manually release transmission in order to tow out. Probably not repairable.

The car is making an annoying "whining noise/hum" when driving. As the speed increases so does the noise. I have had the 2014 Durango citadel (v6) 2 years and have approximately 16,000 miles on it. I started to notice the noise around 12,000 miles. The tires are inflated at the recommended tire pressure and have been recently rotated. This has had no effect on the level of noise. I spoke to another owner of the Dodge 2014 Durango citadel and he is having the same problem. He mentioned that on a recent service at the Dodge dealer they asked him if he was experiencing any noise in the drive train. I will be following up with my dealer tomorrow.

I backed the vehicle out of the garage onto the driveway, then put it in park. I left the engine running and exited the vehicle to walk in the garage. I was already in the garage and turned back to see the vehicle was moving forward. I tried to get back in to stop the car and was trapped between the door and the car. Wife went to start up vehicle and it would not crank over. Called aaa for a jump. It crank and started with a rattle can sound. I came home to verify sound. It did such sound as she explained. I'm a mechanic and removed valve cover to check for rocker damage none found. I removed intake and found water in #7and #8 cylinder. I looked at seals on intake and found not installed properly. The seals were not square in bores of intake. I have not removed oil pan but I suspect connecting rods bent on start up. I need to know if Dodge new about this issue. I did do a coolant pressure test and it held fine with no leaks. Was there a recall on the intake which destroyed my wife's engine.

While driving I noticed car wouldn't shift gear. It was stuck on d6 when came to a full stop at stop sign. Then car wouldn't move forward after pressing gas pedal. Getting out of car to ask for assistance to push car on side of road, the car started rolling forward. Ran back to car n drove back home. Parked car in garage and turned off car then back on. Now the car wouldn't go to any gears. It's stuck on park. It wouldn't reverse or drive. Called chrystler warranty online and they had it towed to the nearest dealer for repair.

While driving the car was stuck on d6. It wouldn't shift gears up or down. Pulled over and was at complete stop but car was still on d6. Had turned car off and on then the engine light came on.

I often attempt to accelerate at slower speeds generally between 20-30mph to pass another vehicle etc. . . The response after pushing the gas is very delayed sometimes as if the vehicle hesitates.

Shortly after 1st acquiring the 2014 Dodge Durango r/t awd an exhaust smell filling the cabin was noticeable after acceleration and steadily traveling between 40-45 mph w/the front and rear air conditioning units on recirculation. The occurrence was repeatable and noticeable by my spouse and children while riding in the Durango. It was brought to the purchasing dealership multiple times for the exhaust leak but ultimately they could not determine the origination or cause; they attempted a software update. The Dodge Durango was brought to another dealership where the rear cabin air exhausters and lift gate grommets were replaced to no avail. The 2nd dealership ultimately advised they do not know how or why the exhaust is entering the interior cabin and have labeled the exhaust leak as a “smell”. A non-feasible vehicle replacement has been offered. Documentation of the exhaust leak issue is available for further review. The Dodge Durango has not been modified.
