I have an sxt version of this minivan. While replacing the disc pads I found that the parking brake cable on the rear driver side is worn almost in two. I checked several of my neighbors vehicles and found only the sxt versions with the rear sway bar seem to be affected. The se version did not have a rear sway bar. The parking brake cable is routed between the fuel tank and the sway bar and it rubs on the sway bar with any movement of the vehicle. This will cause two problems; 1) the parking brake will fail or only be applied to one side. If the vehicle is raised on the passenger side and the parking brake has failed and the wheels are not blocked, the vehicle could roll off of the jack. 2) the severed part of the parking brake cable could damage the wheel brake line and cause it to rupture resulting in total loss of all brakes.

Sway bar links and bushings went out and the car is only 52,000 miles old. I have heard this is a common problem. The dealer told me it wasn't dangerous but it sure feels that way. They told me it isn't covered under my service warranty and I would have to pay over $400 even though I have a service contract. I see lots of people on the internet that have this problem and it has even been reported to you several times. Why don't you have a recall.
I bought a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan at around 87k in 2004. At the time I was aware that there's a knocking noise under the hood. I thought maybe due to the high mileage. I've been a local dealer for regular services since then and no one ever told me there's a problem with this. Until around September I went to the deal had transmission fluid changed and a person from the service department wanted me to replace sway bar links and bushings for my vehicle. I didn't know what was this all about so I asked a list of parts that he required me for replacing. I went home and did some research on these parts and found many owner of this cars complaint about a knocking noise from this model. An owner was told to replace his sway bar links and bushings and he did what was told but the noise is coming back after 6 months. My CO-worker bought his Chrysler town & country (2002 model), which is the same model as Dodge Grand Caravan around the same time (2004) I bought mine. It's mileage is around 30k. He gave me a ride just 2 weeks ago and I found that it has the knocking noise too. My worry is will this a safety issue or not? I'm sure this is a manufactured defect from daimler Chrysler and just wondering why DC isn't recall this model for having the problem fixed?
* this should be a all year round incident excepts summer (why?).

Reference to case with sway bar bushing problem ref. Number 10173990 . I had the same problem with my 2005 Grand Caravan with 25000 miles on it. I took it to the dealer and they repaired it no problem at no cost. Then on 23 Nov 2006 my van just died. Battery was dead. Would not jump start at all. Towing service could not jump start it either and said something major was wrong. They towed to dealer in shreveport on flat bed where they said the battery was bad. But the good news they said it was all covered under warranty. And they also told me everything from front bumper to rear bumper is 100 percent covered under the warranty for the first 3 years/36,000 miles. So I don't understand why the dealers are so inconsistent is warranty repairs. It states in the manual what is and is not covered and to sum that up anything that shows any sign if hitting a hazard in the road is not covered. Maybe we should start a class action here.
Bought my 2005 Grand Caravan in July 2006 with 39,000 miles on it. At 41,000 had the sway bar bushings replaced, covered by dealership warranty. This is the third caravan that I have owned since 2001 and every one has had the same problem.
While driving at any speed the consumer heard a rattling sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The dealer examined the vehicle and found that the sway bar link broke. The consumer believes this is a premature failure and that the part should be recalled.

First noticed bumping noise under front end when I was making a right turn and going over a dip or bump in the road. Eventually, the noise happened turning left or right or going over any bumps or dips in the road (ex. Railroad tracks, speed bumps ) the front end of van sounded like it was actually hitting the pavement. The dealership replaced the sway bar bushings the first five times, then the sixth time we took it in, they replaced the struts and the sway bar link as well. That was July 2001. As of 2 weeks ago (Dec. 2001) the bumping noise under the van has started again.

Sway bars failed and are expensive to replace. Mechanic says that he is replacing alot of them on Dodge products and that it is a case of poor engineering. Bill $200 for both sides and he said to expect them to continue going bad -- since there are no other aftermarket manufacturers making these parts he must replace them with Dodge branded oem.
