4 Headlights problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/25/2008

The specific reference I have is a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. The issue is the plastic cover for the headlamps have undergone a material failure?they have a series of micro-structured cracks throughout the entire plastic cover that scatters a significant portion of the light from lamps preventing normal function and good vision for the drivers. Plastics do not crack on their own and this event is not from an accident or other unique event on this car. I have a ph. D. In chemistry from harvard university and my expertise is in micro/nano-technology. This education which is unique has enabled me to investigate the reason of a ?hazy? headlamp cover. The dealership mis-diagnosed the problem and initially sold a ?costly? ($50 plus labor) cleaner kit. Micro-cracks cannot be fixed but such a method and when I called the dealership back to explain the this was not dirt or a haze but cracks; they admitted they did not look closely at the problem and did not know what to do and suggested calling Chrysler directly. I contacted customer service at Chrysler who basically ignored my comment, said that they would do nothing about such a claim, and told me since the car was too old I had to pay all expenses out of my pocket. I turn to you because I do not have the resources to see if this is a larger problem; which from my experience with materials believe it has to be. Unlike with brake pads or other consumable/wear-down items in a car, the plastic covers for lights should not fail over time. Since the car still runs and the lights are technically on although the visibility is greatly diminished, they might not realize their safety is at risk with diminished visibility. I also believe that crash investigators do not look at the quality of the plastic covering the headlamps and the possibility of micro-cracks limiting visibility before the accident occurred. Thank you for your time in reading my comments. Sincerely, adam winkleman, ph. D.

5 Headlights problem of the 1997 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/01/2007

When brakes are applied, they're occasionally hard. Front end will dip, car slowly slows down, won't come to a stop soon enough. I had barely started to accelerate at a light when the vehicle in front of me stopped suddenly, I applied the brakes, they were hard, brakes wouldn't engage. Causing me to rear ended the vehicle in front of me. I was only going about 5 mph. (spark plug wires) about every 12,000 miles we have to replace the spark plug wires due to the 2nd cylinder wire being burnt from the engine. A simple guard could fix this problem! if not, a fire could result! (seats/seat belts) the seats will lean back slightly & unexpectedly, could cause a serious injury or even death if involved in an accident! the seat belts don't seem to stay tight around the waist. The seat belt sits too high off the lap. If in an accident, I was afraid I would slide under the belt because it's so loose! I wouldn't want that to happen to me, my spouse or any of my children. Head lights) these lights are pathetic! the head lights will go out without any warning, sometimes won't come on at all making it impossible to go anywhere! they are very dim & the high beams are about worthless because the beam is too much to the sides or up too high. Visibility isn't very far and it's too scary to drive at night due to the dim lights.

32 Headlights problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 11/02/1999

I purchased a 1999 Dodge Intrepid in February of 1999 (new) from santa rosa Dodge in santa rosa, California. This vehicle was equipped with goodyear quantum series tires. During the scheduled 6,000-mile service and in the process of rotating all four of my tires, it was discovered that one of the tires had developed a 4" diameter bulb in it on the interior. I was advised to take it into a goodyear dealer and have it replaced as it was covered under their warranty and not daimlerchrysler's. This goodyear dealer instantly stated that the damage was caused by some sort of road hazard and was not covered by their warranty. I subsequently contacted goodyear in akron, ohio and they suggested I get a second opinion, which I did. In addition, after a very brief inspection, I was told the same thing. Apparently, there was a tear on the interior wall of the tire. I do not believe that a mild bump with a well rounded curb could not cause a tear on the outer wall of the tire let alone cause a tear on the interior wall of the tire. I believe that these tires were defective in their construction, as goodyear no longer sells these tires. ( dot number: tire size: 15 ).
