This car is six years old and I have now had to replace brake pads and rotors three times. Each time the technician indicates that there is minimal brake pad left and the rotors are rusted, pitted and overheated. They recommend in each case that the the repair is a safety concern. What I have read online from other Journey owners is that the brakes are woefully inadequate for the vehicle size and weight. It is time that Chrysler repair this once and for all.
Dodge Journey brake system is undersized for vehicle size and weight. Brake pads and rotors are needing full changeout after approx 25k miles. Vehicle has less than 60k miles on odometer, and brake system again must be repaired prematurely. I believe this is the reason Dodge increased the rotor size on 2011 models.
I have replaced brake pads and rotors numerous times. I have had to have the entire breaking system repaired several times. Have spent a lot of money on repairs. Brakes should not have to be replaced this often.
In June 2016 I took my car to bettehausen Dodge in tinley park, IL. They did some repairs and since then the horn goes off by itself. The car can be parked with the motor off or you could be driving in traffic and the horn will blow. I took the car back to bettenhausen in August 2016 they did another computer update and the horn is still going off by itself. The horn was find until I took it to bettenhausen in June. Once they finished working on it they horn blows sporadically. Again in August 2016 I had my car towed to bettenhausen because the car broke down. Upon bettenhausen reviewing my car they stated it was the heater hose, a gasket and the anti freeze bottle had a hole in it. It cost me $582. 00 for that repair. The service department also informed me that I needed front and rear motor mounts broken, front and rear struts blown out, front and rear brake pads and rotors warped and worn, right rear wheeling bearing excessive noise. These are major repairs and will cost major money. Why didn't bettenhausen inspect my car thoroughly in June when it was towed in? I think these things were wrong with the car in June but it was inspected by the service department. So I drove around for months with all this wrong with my vehicle. What if I couldn't stop, or a wheel fell off while I was driving the expressway? it was under warranty in June and now it is not and these are major safety hazzards.
I have had to have the break pads and rotors changed 4 times in the last year. I have read so many complaints regarding the same issue. Why is there not a recall?.
I have a 10 Dodge Journey awd r/t , I am also a ase certified mechanic. My wife drives this thing easy. . No matter what brand of rotors or pads I use the problem comes back. . The problem I see is, the brakes are not up to par, basically to small for this vehicle. . The rotors should have been at least 1 to 1. 5 inches larger in dia.
I bought this vehicle brand new in 2010 and did not have to change the brakes on it until 2014 - now, I have to change all 4 of the brakes right down to the rotors every year (all 4 pads and rotors changed 2014, 2015, 2016 and now 2017, with calibers changed in 2016 as well)! there is never any squeak from the brakes or other noises or failure to stop until all of a sudden, the brakes grind loudly when used and the vehicle requires a great distance to stop.
I am a mechanic and my mother owns a 2010 Dodge Journey it has 60000 on the odometer and I have replaced the rotors/pads 3 times with napa premium grade not the junk factory my self. The front once and the back all 3 times. The stealership has done them 2 times on all four corners. No recall the dealership said everyone they sold has come in with the same issue (mostly the rear multiple times). Not even a service bulletin. . . How is this possible? how may times is this going to happen? consumer protection needs to get on this and file a class action lawsuit. Also same issue trying to find tires for this car was a real problem. She payed the same amount for the tires as I did for 33" m/ts for my expedition.
The rear brakes started sqeaking, I had the Chrysler dealer inspect and was told there was no recall on the brakes. I called Chrysler customer service to submit a complaint and was told that my warranty expired by years. I called them because I read that they were extending the warranty. I had to replace the brake pads and rotors at 32,000 miles. I researched and found that the problem is the brakes and rotor is too thin for the weight of the car and that Chrysler Dodge knew about in their 2009 Journey and didn't fix it in the 2010. The "short" extension of the warranty is not sufficient, there needs to be a recall. I bought this car because of the claim of drivability and low gas mileage so driving fast in this car doesn't happen. I drive careful and do not drive fast or brake hard so the rear brakes should not have worn out.
I replaced in the last 12 months pads twice, I replace a rotor and wheel bearing, this cost me over $450. 00, did not know that warrant had been extended for my car. After doing all this after a few months still had the same problem took it into dealer and was told they would do the same thing and I needed to pay a $100. 00 deductible, hopeful my car will be done today.
The problem I encountered was that the steering wheel shakes violently if brakes are pressed at 60 mph. The mechanics at carmax, machined the rotors and replaced the brake pads which seemed to fix the problem. Roughly 3. 5 to 4 months later, I had the same problem. This time, the mechanics at carmax replaced the rotors and the front brakes. The vehicle was once again placed into service last Wednesday on December 18, 2013. Once again, the rotors were machined and the brakes replaced. I purchased the vehicle o January 17, 2013 with the starting mileage of 34,904. I have put roughly 10,000 miles on the vehicle. When I took the vehicle in for the third time, I decided to look on the internet hoping that might help. However, I found hundreds of people with the same vehicle that were having the same problem as I was. I contacted Dodge but they say that this is a maintenance issue. I believe that this is a safety issue. I have 4 children and god forbid that the brake system suddenly decided that it doesn't want to work! apparently, there is a flaw in either parts or design that needs to be acknowledged and corrected by Dodge.
Premature wearing of brake pads and rotors.
The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Journey awd. The contact stated that there was an excessive vibration in the vehicle when applying the brakes. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection and they informed him that the rotors were failing and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 15,000. Updated 08-09-12 the stated the brake pads were not worn nor was it necessary to replace them. The vehicle has poor fuel mileage and loss of power. The vehicle dragged instead of coasting when releasing the throttle. The vehicle operates correctly in neutral and without using all wheel drive. Fuel mileage also increased. Updated 08/13/2012.
Rotors on these vehicles are failing, causing steering wheel to shake and vehicle to leave lane of travel. Dealer replaced rotors and brake pads. In August 2013 vehicle started doing the same thing. Vehicle was brought back to dealer and rotors were failing again. The rotors on this vehicle are designed to small for the weight of the vehicle and is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.
My brakes started to grind two weeks ago. I had to have both the pads and rotors replaced. Dodge in medina, ohio stated that they are not sure why I had premature wear and would not cover the cost of repair. I stated that I am aware of the problems of the Journeys breaks, however it got me no where. I had to pay to replace them totally out of pocket costing $364. 93.
Brakes would shimmy, took to dealer on may 30, 2012, replaced pads on front and resurfaced all four rotors, only to have same problem on Dec. 11, 2012, brakes would shimmy. Took to another dealer and had all four rotors resurfaced once again.
We received notice that there was a voluntary brake recall from Dodge Jan or Feb 2012. At the time my wife was experiencing jerking and pulling to the steering wheel when braking. We took the vehicle to the dealership and we were advised that the front pads and rotors would have to be replaced and Dodge would cover the cost. This was around Feb/Mar 2012 with approximately 17k on the vehicle. On 4 Aug we took the vehicle back to Dodge due to the same braking problems and a check engine light. We were advised that the check engine light was caused by a crack piston head and Dodge stated that the piston would be replaced under warranty. However, we were then advised that the jerking and pulling in the steering was caused by the rear brakes and we would have to paid $534. 00 to have the rear rotors and pads replaced. This didn't sound right to me so I checked for any TSB/recalls, the cas website, and NHTSA website I found out that the brake problems (both front and rear) have been a serious issue with Dodge and repairs and costs have been all over the board with Dodge excepting no real fix except charging car owners on repeated repairs that only fix the problem for 3-9k. If this is the case NHTSA should mandate Dodge to properly fix this problem with correct parts or fully recall all of these vehicles. Dodge is putting my wife and son in danger everytime they set foot in the vehicle, and that is something the agency for highway safety should not allow to continue. We consumers need a real fix and not a bandaide on a defective product and your agency should not allow Dodge to continue to ignore this problem. Nhtsa should not have to wait for someone to lose their life before taking action against Dodge. We are not beans to count, we are people!.
When braking at speeds above 50 mph, there is a violent shake in the vehicle. Vehicle is only 5 years old, and now needs a third set of brake pads and rotors. This is a clear and well known problem with the 2009 and 2010 Journeys, yet the dealer (and Chrysler) refuses to acknowledge or fix it. When called Chrysler, I was told "they stand behind their dealership & the dealership says it's "normal wear and tear", so they will not authorize the repair". So basically, even though you are a loyal customer (one who has never bought anything by mopar), they don't care.
The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that when the brakes were applied, the front end of the vehicle would shake excessively. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was inspected. The dealer informed the contact that the front rotors and brake pads were worn and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was repaired. The current mileage was 14,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 11,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The brakes shake bad when slowing from 40 mph or higher note front rotors and pads were replaced at 21956 miles after two times in the shop at a cost of 50. 00 but I am having the same problem with the rear brakes when the car is stopped fast rear brakes shake Chrysler will not warranty. The transmission hits very hard about 50% of the time when shifting into drive from any other stick position this is causing transmission damage Chrysler is aware of the problem the dealer shop mark Dodge showed me an email they got back from Chrysler after the shop foreman noted this defect was happening and contacted Chrysler about what to do. The response from Chrysler was " scott this has been noted in several prior cases . At this time it is considered characteristic- brian " so a transmission banging into gear is characteristic. This is the first time I have had a vehicle do this in 40yrs of driving.
May 10, 2011 with 25917 km on the vehicle and at that time windsor Chrysler replaced my front rotors and brake pads on both sides of the vehicle. On March 15, 2012 I started experiencing braking problems again with 45029 km on the vehicle and once again windsor Chrysler replaced my front rotors and brake pads on both sides of the vehicle. On both occasions the vehicle would shake violently left to right when I was braking at speed of 100 km when as this occurred suddenly without any other warning that the braking system failed and needs repair. We have had to replace front brake pads and rotors approximately every 12,000 miles on this car. We bought the car used with only approximately 18,000 miles on it and at approximately 19,000 miles the front brake pads and rotors had to be replaced for worn out pads and warped rotors. Took it to a Dodge dealer to see why the brakes wore out so early and they said it had non-mopar brake pads on it so it voided the warranty and there was nothing they could do for us. It has approximately 58,000 miles on it now and we have had to replace the front brake pads and rotors 3 times for worn out pads and warped rotors and the rear brake pads and rotors once at 40,000 miles for the same. I have never had a vehicle go thru brakes like this one. The brakes are undersized for the weight of the vehicle and Dodge knows it but refuses to do anything about it, that is not right! when the brakes wear out this quickly with normal driving conditions there is a problem. This needs to be addressed before someone gets injured or killed due to this poorly designed brake system.
Had just purchased the car. While driving car a week later, I hit the brakes to slow down for a traffic light. Steering wheel started shaking. Had to let off the brakes to keep control of car. Reapplied brakes and got stopped. Pulled over to check wheels. Everything was good. Took to mechanic and said I needed rotors and pad. Had them replaced. Within 7000 miles, same problem. Has constantly been a problem. Having to get new pads and rotor about every 7000-10000 miles. This is not right. Something needs to be done and heaven forbid you are close to warranty. I think Dodge trains their technicians to cover up problems to make it to warranty so they don't have to pay for it.
1) I had the front brakes replaces after owning the care 7 days. The dealer replaced the front rodars and brake pads. Six weeks later I complained of the metal to metal sound from the rear brakes, but the dealer told me, "you can keep driving the car, it's ok for now". Now the brakes are totally gone and the front brakes are causing the car to shake when you slow down. . . Again!! 2) the car doesn't always start. You have to crank the key 4-5 times before it will start. This seems to be in intermittent problem. 3) the transmission jerks into gear. 4) the plastic in the wheel well coming off.
At 9000 miles, I had to stop very fast because someone pulled out in front of me. When I stopped, the whole front end shuttered. I took it in to machaik Dodge, they replaced the rotors and pads stating they were warped. They said nothing about it being a safety recall. Which it still isn't. I finally received a recall letter 2 months after it being fixed the first timer. Now at 35,000 miles, I need brake pads. I took it back to machaik today 1/27/2012, they told me they would replace the brake pads for a $100. 00 deductible. My problem is all the complaints people are having with the brake pads and having to replace them every 15-25,000 miles.
I am very concern about the braking system on this vehicle. I had the rotors and brake pads replaced within the first year. In the second year pads and rotors turned, three months later one of the pads need replaced. I have filed two complaints with Dodge and am waiting back from their case manager. I am about to take a trip from georgia to iowa and luckily the place I do oil changes, always will do a courtesy check of the entire vehicle including brakes. It is in with the dealer now, but it sounds like they want to band aid fix it again. I am leary when driving and seeing other Dodge Journeys on the road now as if they are a safety hazard to everyone on the road. The last time the brakes had heated up so bad near chattanooga that it warped the rotors and the entire car shook so bad coming off the mountain. Scared me to death, along with my passengers.
Purchased new Dodge Journey 2010 in April 2011. Basic type tires needed to be replaced by September 2011 due to wear. Attempted to replace with snow tires, needed for safe winter driving in rural area with heavy snowfall. Only tires that fit wheels were on national back order. Used size/brand recommended by dealership that almost fit in October 2011. Since then, I have had to have all four brake rotors machined, front brake pads replaced for third time now, not covered by warranty. Car pulsates/steering wheel vibrates violently when braking starting at about 40 mph. Pulsation/vibration does not completely go away even immediately after brakes worked on/pads replaced. I have the tires rotated every 6 months, this does not help decrease pulsation. As of July 2013, no winter tires can be found that fit the car exactly per the dealership. Car slows down too much when coasting. Gas mileage averages 17 mpg, current mileage is approx 43000. I have frequent problems with the locks and alarm when temperatures drop below 40 f, which is from October to may. Car does not always lock or unlock using either key fob or by pressing button in car, must press it multiple times. Car alarm does not work consistently. If car is locked with the fob, the car does not always lock but is sometimes "armed" and the alarm frequently goes off when the door is opened. Must place key fob in ignition and turn car on to stop alarm. Driver side door frequently would not unlock during winter, lock mechanism could be heard attempting to turn, lock next to window appeared to be jumping slightly. Door had to be unlocked from inside after entering car through other doors. Dealership stated they could not get problems to replicate (with locks, alarm).
The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Journey. While driving approximately 35 mph, the front end of the vehicle began to vibrate and pull to the right. The contact applied the brake pedal with force to stop the shaking. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician stated that the rotors and pads would have to be replaced. After the repair, the failure recurred approximately 28,000 miles later. The vehicle was not further repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 9,000.
Went on a vacation to yellowstone national park. All the way out had intermitent pulsation of the steering wheel when braking at highway speeds. Front discs and brake pads were replaced by dealer at 11921 miles because of warped rotors. After many more complaints of pulsations when braking the dealer replaced the rear discs and pads at 23184 miles, account warped rotors. So after 6 1/2 months ( October 10 ) the front rotors were warped and 10 months later ( August 8, 2011 ) the rear rotors were warped. The pulsation has happened again already and it is only August 22 2011. Each time I take the car in for the pulsation problem the dealer says he takes it for a ride and finds no problem. Each time it has had the same mileage in as the mileage out. I don't think the dealer even took it for a ride because he already knew what the problem was.
The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while the brake was engaged, the steering wheel began to shake and jerk abnormally. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic several times for the failure. The brake pads and rotors were replaced several times however, the failure was not corrected and the steering wheel continued to shake when the brake was engaged. The failure mileage was 33,000 and the current mileage was 60,000.
Faulty brake system; pending 3rd repair to correct the problem; car shakes when braking and is unsafe to drive; dealer fix is to replace rotors & pads with the same defective parts leading to continued unsafe conditions.
