11 problems related to dash wiring have been reported for the 1996 Dodge Neon. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Oil leaked from failed head gasket or cracked head, exhaust leak from head or manifold. Speedometer dial stop working. The car only has 30000 miles on it. My repair man wants $500. 00 just to tear down the engine to see if it is the gasket or a cracked head, and thats just the labor and not including parts. This is a safty problem that should be cause for a recall. How many complaints or lives will it take before NHTSA takes action aganist this car manufacturing company?.
Instrument panel works occasionally. Can't tell how fast/can't tell if gas is in vehicle, and gauges inside panel won't light up. Please provide any further information.
Heater went out and vehicle was filled with smoke. Heat blew only on high. Also, connector wiring in dash was burned. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated that wiring connector was not avilable by manufacturer.
Speedometer, odometer, trip meter, gas and temp gauges will all stop working. Sometimes they'll all work, sometimes they'll all quit. The speedometer, odometer and tripmeter will all go out every time I drive the car after it's been running about 20 minutes. The gas and temp gauges will go out occasionally.
The whole dash unit ( circuit board) which controls the speedometer did not work. My mechanic stated he has replaced a number of them over the last several monthsnic.

Oil leaks from the engine head gaskets every eight months. Dealer contacted and did repairs. Problem still exisits. Also, car stalls while driving, due to a problem with the computer.
Head gasket/ instrument cluster failed.
