Dodge Neon owners have reported 7 problems related to accelerator pedal (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Dodge Neon based on all problems reported for the Neon.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Neon. While driving in the center lane at 40 mph, the accelerator pedal moved all the way to the left and underneath the brake pedal. This prevented the vehicle from accelerating. The contact could not depress the brake pedal because it would press down on the accelerator pedal as well. She applied the emergency brake and was able to pull the vehicle over until the speed completely slowed down and the vehicle came to a stop. The contact tied a rope from the accelerator pedal to the middle console, which would allow the vehicle to accelerate when the rope was pulled. The dealer stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop and they stated that the failure was due to a manufacturer defect. The dealer stated that she would be responsible for the failure. The contact called the manufacturer and they replaced the vehicle for free; however, she believes a recall should be issued. The current and failure mileages were 150,000. Updated 3/19/09

While driving in bumper to bumper traffic the consumer's vehicle was involved in a collision. The owner glanced away for a moment, looked back and the brake pedal was applied and the accelerator kicked in. There was a feeling of the vehicle braking against acceleration. Then the vehicle hit the car in front. There was no investigation into the accident, however, the owner believed the accelerator may had something to do with this accident. Since then it has happened several times in emergency braking situations.

Gas pedal folded over at approx a 90 degree angle, towards driver when driver was attempting to back out of a driveway. Since there was no support available for the foot to rest on, the foot slid off the gas pedal, sideways toward the brake. Durning the foot sliding, tip of shoe caught small part of gas pedal still attached causing car to surge resulting in collision of parked car with right rear bumper of Neon. Gas pedal at this time was noted to have split/broke at exact same spot on outside of gas pedal, by brake, and inside of gas pedal near consol. Both splits are right above where small screws connect a very thin, plastic gas pedal to metal rod at bottom 1/4 of pedal. Dodge dealer insist this break was done intentionally by a human . Yet they also insist that this part was near impossible to break. Wow I have a very strong 16 yr old daughter ! I thank god that she was only backing out of a driveway when this happened and not driving down the freeway. Car had been driven 3 times only when this occured. .
