Failure Date: 01/23/2019

Takata recall I was driving and I accelerated through a green traffic light on a city street and as I went to push the brakes to slow down for another vehicle my truck accelerated on its own as I continued to press the brakes to the floor to try and stop but it continued to accelerate then I tried to pull over to get out off traffic to avoid hitting anyone and it still never slowed down as I'm trying to pull over. Once I got out of traffic I went off on the side of the road and threw it in park. I sat there for about 20 minutes then started it back up and drove home without any issue then that night my husband drove it to work without issues but when he got off the next day as he was backing out the parking space he was in motion to reverse out the space and he pushed the gas and then went to push the brake and it accelerated on him sending him out of control spinning in a circle then hitting a parked vehicle.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 Dodge Nitro

Failure Date: 06/16/2017

I started a complaint before and the ref number is 10995543 but more has happened since. I have had several occasions were my car would accelerate on its own and not stop. I lost all control and it was like the car had a mind of its own. The car then would stall in middle of roads, intersections, ect, I was almost hit head on by a construction truck one time last year cause the car accelerated while driving on a busy street, the car just accelerated, and wouldnt stop at a red light and the brakes would not work. The steering and everything seized up and then the car just shut down. A red lightning bolt popped up on the dash right before it died. This happened once in 2015, once in 2016, and twice in 2017. I was told over and over by ed shults of jamestown that it is not an electrical issue. Then I filed a report in June of 2017 cause it happened again, and again they just charged me and said it wasnt electrical. Now yesterday 9/27/2017 the vehicle did it again so I called ed shults and they wanted me to pay a daignosis fee again and to pay to have it towed 45 miles away, so I sent it to dave warren in jamestown NY instead and he is a Dodge dealer, and they informed me today that it is electrical. I am so upset because this vehicle has almost killed me, its under warranty but the warranty doesnt seem to cover much of anything or even the diagnosis, and I am still paying on this vehicle that is costing so much in repairs. Please help.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Dodge Nitro

Failure Date: 08/02/2016

It constantly honks horn, flashes lights and locks and unlocks unattended with or without keys in ignition. Its so bad runs battery down. Noticed it's tried to stall while driving going around curves or turns. It's been diagnosed as the tipm and warranty won't cover it. I've disconnected the battery due to annoying others as well plus running battery down. This is getting to be a bigger problem. More and more issues . It's definitely a safety issue and needs to be fixed by Chrysler!.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 Dodge Nitro

The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 85,000.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 Dodge Nitro

Failure Date: 12/11/2015

Driving on 2 lane highway and had to brake hard as another vehicle cut me off. As soon as I did (brake) my SUV shut off. . . All the lights flashed on the dash board. I immediately put the flashers on and hoped I didn't get rear-ended. I tried 3x to restart my 2011 Dodge Nitro- it finally started. I was near the dealership where I purchased the vehicle, I pulled in, told them what just happened. They hooked it up to the computer and reported 'no errors'. It was a near miss on a busy highway, and I am worried if this were to happen again. I don't feel safe in my Dodge Nitro. I was alone, but what if I had passengers, children, etc. ? it is definitely a safety issue when you brake hard and your vehicle just shuts off, wouldn't move. This is incredible scary. Someone or more than one person is going to be killed when they get slammed from behind and pushed into on coming traffic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 Dodge Nitro

Failure Date: 06/11/2015

Approx. The week of June 9,2015, the indicator lights on the dash came on, anti skid light etc. I took my vehicle in to local auto shop, they ordered the computer module and they couldn't get it to sync. They took to Dodge dealership for them to program. When I picked up, lights on dash still all on. Auto shop spoke with Dodge and person who programmed said they programmed the module, but something else was causing dash to light up. Auto shop tells me, I have to buy a 2nd module. After a weeks time of not having a vehicle and Dodge trying to address, they realize the 1st module was faulty so they ordered a new one. Vehicle then drove fine after installation, but as of Friday, July 24, 2015. As I was crossing a major light intersection, 3/4 way across the Nitro dies out on me and the dash light anti skid comes on, I coast to the side of the road and I was fortunate the cars behind me were paying attention otherwise I could have been rear ended! I put the car in park, restart the car and it turns on fine, no lights on dash. I continue to head home and upon the turn into my neighborhood ( a slow turn), the Nitro dies on me again and the same anti skid light comes on again. Road is dry weather is clear. I pull off to shoulder on road and repeat the put into park and start engine. I get home and called Dodge and explained situation. They see in vehicle record that they did replace the computer module. Dodge is taking in my Nitro to service on tues. July 28,2015. There has got to be an electrical issue with these computer modules and for me is a safety issue when your driving fine and then your vehicle suddenly shuts down because of this module.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Dodge Nitro

Failure Date: 09/07/2013

Wife was driving home from a dinner date with a friend, we were on the phone with each other when the horn started going crazy, wipers rear and front started running on their own spitting out washer fluid, door locks going crazy, both horns going off consitantly, and accelerator not working properly. She pulled over and shut the vehicle off. Everything continued to happen she removed the key from ignition and same result. I told her to try door locks on keychain no change, tried panic alarm on key chain and still nothing. She did not have tools to disconnect battery. After a few minutes it stopped. She made it home safely without any injuries except sever panic and anxiety. When this happened first thing I did was get online and look for issues. Apparently this is a commonly known issue by Chrysler. The tipm is bad. Many people reported having same issue. Chrysler wants to rip you off cause its a dealer only item. Known issue and yet no recall was ever issued. I contacted Chrysler they said per the VIN they could not authorize any repairs except for the current recall that is active. This could have led to a serious accident. Especially when you hit the brakes and not slow down at all and have to use emergency brake. So now we are stuck with a vehicle non op and dont have $1000 to fix a known issue by Chrysler. I will never buy another Chrysler product. I will be in touch with them again to seek repairs.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Dodge Nitro

Failure Date: 08/12/2013

Pulling into my driveway when engine suddenly started running at high rate of speed and car started speeding. Managed to miss house and enterer garage with engine going at top speed. At beginning of driveway when car started speeding, I hit the breaks but it seemed to have no effect. When I realized car was out of control I pushed the brakes with both feet with very little effect. Two of the four brakes finally took hold three quarters of the way in the garage and I skidded to a halt hitting several cabinets and shelves. The only clue I have as to why this happened is that the cruse control has been having a problem for the last few months. It sometimes worked and sometimes would not turn on and sometimes I could not shut is off. . . . . .

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2010 Dodge Nitro

Failure Date: 10/07/2012

I have a 2010 Dodge Nitro. Sunday night I had the scariest episode of uncontrollable acceleration. The pedal was not blocked by anything, it moved freely. But when I pressed on the accelerator, it kept accelerating. Nothing stopped this short of putting the car in neutral, even pressing on the brakes with all my weight only slowed the car down. I was scared out of my mind. Nothing worked except for to slam on the brakes, put the car in neutral, then park, and turn the car off. When I turned the car back on, everything was fine. I have never had any other problems with my Nitro. It may be a glitch but this is too scary to not report. No one was hurt thankfully, but we were seconds away from being automatically forced into an intersection of oncoming traffic if my boyfriend hadn't been Smart enough to tell me to put the car in park and turn it off. I immediately took it into the dealership (its there right now, I immediately called the dealer after this happened). I could have seriously hurt or killed myself, or someone else. I know I have read other forums where people have had the same issue with their Nitro. I am seriously considering getiing a new car and never buying from Dodge again. I have a brand new baby I have to think about and that was too scary to even risk happening again. Dodge needs needs to do something about this, its unacceptable for any vehicle to perform like this, even once. Especially when lives are at stake.

23 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Dodge Nitro

Failure Date: 11/23/2010

I began having problems with my 2008 Dodge Nitro in Nov 2010 (still covered by extended warranty). I was driving and the car systems went haywire, the dash lights illuminating, windshield wipers and washer fluid engaged, the headlights cutting out and the horn blaring uncontrollably. Turning the car off did not correct the problem and it eventually stopped after 3-4 minutes. This happened again on the way to work (this time the radio turned to full volume with no assist), the heat cut out and the windshield/lights/horn went nuts. I took the car in for a diagnostic and was assured they'd find the problem. The Dodge dealership ran diagnostics, pulled codes, but could not replicate the issue so told me it was "absolutely fine" to drive. I continued to deal with the 'freak outs' throughout the years, until another one happened where the car would not stop (until we disconnected the battery). I brought it to a private mechanic who pulled codes and said there was a problem, but I had to bring it to Dodge. On the way to work at approx 70 mph, I lost control of the car (it was as if I were slamming on the brakes-although they were never engaged) I am lucky the person behind me was able to swerve around me and not rear-end me. Dodge determined that the computer told my transmission to go into 'fail mode' thrusting me into 2nd gear. I paid for another diagnostic and they told me a tune-up and a cleaning of the battery coils would clear the problem. The car worked normal for a while, but then had two more incidents, another fail mode on the highway (which also included lights/wipers/horn). I am pregnant and feel very unsafe in this car. Dodge continues to maintain that there is nothing wrong with the car. I have videos of the 'freak outs' so they cannot deny it, but they choose not to help and to continue to encourage me to drive an unsafe vehicle.

24 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 Dodge Nitro

Failure Date: 11/18/2010

After having a vibration in the under carriage of my Dodge Nitro; I then carried it to a Dodge dealership and was told that it needed an induction service. I being totally displeased with the recommendation; I decided to seek some assistance at a local garage and an investigation was done of the vehicle. As a result of the mechanic doing a few test and driving the vehicle; it was said that the vehicle had a chattering feeling coming from the drive train {automatic transmission}. The mechanic also did a google search to find that a lot of other vehicles are having the same problem!!! it was also recorded that there's some issues with the electronics and a few other parts; yet Dodge is sitting back making money off the consumers for these known defects in their vehicles. Why??? also is it just the manner of business now to build vehicle to breakdown on an annual basis??? see nbc nightline news investigation on Dodge dealerships!!! please research!!! thank you a concerned consumer seeking assistance. Would this be a good time to start a world wide class action lawsuit??? please reply as I seek legal counsel.
