Six problems related to wiring have been reported for the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Dashboard falling apart; sharp/jagged pieces of dash cutting into electrical wiring causing shorts, failure of electrical equipment on board truck; while driving on street, highways in motion straight-line and turning.
2001 Dodge quad cab pickup has failing wiring in steering column which makes truck die while driving . Which in turn there is no power brakes or steering and no electrical functions that makes the truck run . Dead on the road literally. Who knows at what speeds this problem may accure. Luckily it happened to me while going slow and I was able to stop the truck. Truck only dead so far to my knowledge . No known human deaths yet that I have heard of from this. If problem is not fixed with wiring harness that no death thing will change soon im pretty sure do to this problem. Id like to do my best to keep my family and other families safe. This needs to be dealt with before someone does die unnecessarily in an accident that can be avoided by replacing the problem part of the pickup.
The contact owns a 2001 Dodge 1500 quad cab. The contact was pulling into a residential driveway at relatively low speeds. He utilized the tilt adjust for the steering wheel and when he lifted upward, the electrical components of the vehicle failed. When he adjusted the steering wheel back downward, the electrical components became operable. The contact repeated several times and the failure occurred with each instance. The dealer discovered that the wiring harness wires were too short and was beginning to loosen. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred and the headlights failed. The high beams were the only front-end lights that would operate. The contact was concerned that the failure could potentially cause a crash. Updated 01/20/11 updated 04/20/11.
My 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 has a dash which began cracking several months ago. The cracks have gotten progressively worse in size and number. A little over 3 months ago a large portion of my dash caved in exposing the wiring underneath to direct sunlight. Also more recently, the molding around my instrument panel is cracking. This could become a hazard should the wiring melt due to not being protected from sunlight. No recall has been made by Dodge and I am not in a position to spend several hundred dollars for a factory defect.
Front dash collapsed, pieces of broken dash have fallen into areas where wiring is. Numerous other owners of the same year/make/model have had exact same thing happen. Can't be considered safe driving around with a 24" hole in the dash with pieces loose within the electrical components, to date not considered a recall item by Dodge.
The in-tank, electric fuel pump failed in my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pick up truck. The connector and wiring on top of the fuel tank was burned as was wiring in the power distribution center under the hood. This is potentially a very dangerous situation. Chrysler is replacing the fuel pump and repairing the wiring. However, they offered no warranty coverage and no coverage of the collateral damage resulting from the pump failure.
