38 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2011

As wife was backing into driveway with steering wheel cranked to the left, the outer left tie rod end failed, and sheered off at the pin thenlodged between the caliper and wheel breaking the wheel and bending the backing plate. This problem matches exactly an existing recall for newer model Dodge trucks (NHTSA id # 11v350000, action # pe11009). It is scary to think if this had happened at speed, reading that some people have rolled off of the road into ditches and even a river. My vehichle previously was issued a recall for steering and parts were replaced with these defective parts.

39 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2011

I was turning my Dodge ram in a parking lot when the steering failed. The tie rod end seperated and failed causing the steering to fail. If I would have been traveling at a higher rate of speed I could have been killed. I had absolutely no control of the trucks steering. Dodge would not correct the problem with out charging me for the repair and didn't seem to care that people could be getting killed from the defective parts in their trucks. I called two dealers and the Chrysler care line but only got the run around. I would also like to make note that there are many of these failures occuring when I did a google search I found many complaints on message boards of Dodge truck steering failures. I'm sure some people have not lived through this failure to launch a complaint about it. I would like to note that I repaired the truck myself with a replacement part from napa. The part cost $103. 00. If I would have taken it to the dealer I would have had to pay over $650. 00 for the parts because Dodge has changed the replacement steering linkage for my truck. I would have had to replace the entire linkage to the 2008. 5 linkage. I am sure they did this because they recognized they had a problem. After doing some research on the internet it appears that the 2008. 5 linkage may have a higher failure rate than the 2006 linkage I have on my truck. Because of that I choose to keep my original style linkage and just replace the tie rod end. This is a very serious problem that Dodge needs to take responsibility for correcting!.

44 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2011

After hitting a bump in the road going 70 mph my truck began to shake so violently it ripped the steering wheel from my hand and uncontrollably changed several lanes on I-95 before coming to a stop. I have since had it happen 3 more times at lower speeds around 55-65 mph. I have contacted Dodge with no help, I have read many accounts of others with the same problem dubbed the "death wobble". I have so far changed tires, shocks, steering dampener, and tie rods. It still has the problem and is extremely dangerous I will not let anyone ride in it, this will absolutely get someone killed eventually. Do not buy a Dodge Ram 2500.

47 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

I have an 06 Dodge Ram 2500 megacab 4x4 with 55k miles. The night prior to the incident I parked my truck after my commute home on the interstate. The next morning I was departing my residence to pick up commuters and drive to work on the interstate when my d/s tie rod broke as I turned out of the driveway. My rim and brake splash guard wre damaged from the tie rod striking it. Dodge stated there was a TSB correcting steering issues with the vehicle and I could not purchase just the tie rod and I had to purchase the entire steering assembly for over $700 not including labor. It was also recomended the ball joints to be replaced for over $3000. The work has not been completed yet. I will most likely find "quality" aftermarket parts and do the work myself.

48 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2011

Front end failure and not just once . I have had it fixed 3 times . There is only 53000 miles on the truck . Last time the tie rod broke and the truck ended up half way in a 10ft ditch. The last time a whole new steering linkage and steering box was put on. I have replaced all of the ball joints twice. This is a stock from the dealer 2500 hd truck.

49 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2011

2006 Dodge 4x4 quad cab 2500. Today as I turned onto street my tie rod disconnected from the ball and my tire went sideways in the middle of the street. I looked on line and found many others with the same problem. If I was pulling my fifth wheel, which I will be soon, I cannot imagine what the outcome would have been. Poor design. When I phoned big o tire in yuma az (928-342-5535) they said this is a common problem. Please put pressure on Dodge for a recall in order to save lives. They know they have a problem.

52 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2010

Chrsyler recall n62 / NHTSA 13v-528 should be for all steering linkage, not just the left tie rod. All tie rod ends failed in my truck, not just the left tie rod. I have documentation and receipts for all of the failed parts.

54 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

I own an operate a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel pick up truck; it has approximately 52000 miles on it. Many parts of the front end are worn out and need to be replaced. I have experienced what is referred to as "death wobble" where the front end of the truck shakes and vibrates violently and highway speeds after hitting bumps in the road. This condition causes an uncontrolled state of vehicle operation and is very un-safe. I have spent a lot of money replacing poorly designed front end components of this truck and there are still more that need replacement. It has bad track bar bushings, bad tie rod ends, bad ball joints, and had a bad steering box replaced under warranty. Dodge is aware of these problems and is turning their back on it by not issuing a recall. They have already changed the designs and updated the steering linkages on 2008 and newer Dodge trucks. All of the components on the front end that are subject to wear are severely worn and only two tie rod ends have grease fittings. These happen to be the only two parts not worn out. I feel not having serviceable grease points on the parts is causing this premature wear along with the use of sub-standard parts, which are not designed to be used with a heavy duty diesel pick up trucks weight. These issues need to be brought to correction before someone is seriously hurt. I am lucky the times the truck has lost control in a shake that I didn't crash. Please help, I feel with only 52000 miles on a 2006 truck that this catastrophic failure of a "heavy duty" front should not be happening. Someone needs to step in and tell Dodge they messed up.

55 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. While driving approximately 55 mph, the contact lost control of the steering. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 11v350000 (steering:linkages:tie rod assembly)but was advised by the manufacturer that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000.

56 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2010

First- in June 2010, the driver side tie rod end shaft, which goes into the female portion on the wheel, sheared off catastrophically. This occurred while backing up and aligning the truck to hook up a utility trailer. The truck had approximately 42000 miles. The Dodge dealership replaced the entire tie rod , including all tie rod ends, and shock absorber on the tie rod. Second- on may 13th 2011, the “new tie rod failed in same location, in nearly the same scenario. While backing out of a parking spot, a loud snap was heard, followed by the tie rod contacting the tire, causing it to blow out, allowing the truck to drop, including trapping the tie rod beneath the front differential. In both cases the male outer driver's side tie rod end “vertical shaft sheared off flush with the tie rod. In both cases the truck was not carrying any load. The truck is used to tow a 5th wheeler several times a year (5-6 x). The 5th wheeler is 10300# unloaded and approx 12300# fully loaded. In neither case was any symptom noted leading up to this event.

58 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

My 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 shakes violently when it hits a bump at speeds over 40 mph. This truck has an extended warrnty that my dealership will not honor. This "death wobble" condition is documented everywhere on the net. Chrysler has figured out a way to charge $1,000. 00 for the mandatory repair by calling it an "tie rod update" updates are not covered by warranty. I am very dissappointed in this crooked practice. This "Dodge death wobble" is a condition that should be a major concern to them. I was charged $100. 00 for them to inspect my truck and tell me that it is a known problem that they stock parts for it. I have not had a crash yet but, can't afford to pay Chrysler anymore money to fix their problems. I will continue to drive this truck in this condition until there is a recall. For the safety of everyone one the road I would think that someone would force this issue. I've seen news stories on this and still nothing has happened. . Read more...

The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving on a dirt road at approximately 30 mph, the tie rod failed, causing the vehicle to go into a ditch. 60 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2010

While driving on the garden state parkway the front end of the vehicle began shaking violently. Once the shakling began the vehicle was totally out of control. Once I slowed to 45 mph the shaking stopped however during this time the vehicle was driving itself. Thankfully there was no crash and I was able to continue driving. The next day during my commute the same exact thing happen. A check of the vehicle reveals no worn parts including the tires and tie rods. A check of the internet shows this is a common problem and referred to as the "death wobble" and was even the subject of discussion on the news. This is extremely dangerous and will lead to accidents and injuries. This matter that Chrysler is aware of needs more attention and a recall should be announced. I am told that the track bar is the problem and will be repaired ASAP.

61 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2009

2006 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel. Passenger side tie rod end falling off of ball. This is the second time this has happened to this vehicle. One at around 60000 miles. And the other was at around 135000 miles. Tie rod ends had recently serviced by Dodge facility and another alignment shop no one detected any problems. This is a major problem and causes loss of vehicle control and in the second instance caused me to leave the roadway out of control. No injuries were caused but I live in a mostly rural area and no one was around at the time of either incident. I would add that my family has 4 more of the same vehicle and all have had this same failure.

62 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 mega cab. While driving at a low speed the right front axle failed. The mechanic discovered that the right front passenger side tie rod had fractured. The manufacturer stated that they could not sell him the part separately because the tie rod was re-designed and that it was sold as a unit. He contacted the dealer, and he was advised that the part was a common failure due to s manufacturers defect. The vehicle was repaired. The current and the failure mileages were 59,000.

63 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2009

I own a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 that may be affected by a recall on 2008 model trucks. The recall number from Chrysler is h36 and the NHTSA campaign id number is 09v005000. I just took my truck in for inspection and this joint on the pitman arm failed for too much play. We called to get the replacement part and were told it is no longer available because the part has been redesigned. You now have to replace multiple components because of this redesign which was initiated from the recall for 2008 trucks and it will cost you approximately $550 for the replacement parts. It will cost you this just for parts, if you truck is out of warranty. My truck has 50,170 miles on it which is over the 36,000 mile warranty. However, I should not have to pay $600+ because one joint is bad. If these parts were redesigned for safety reasons then this should be covered in the recall. I have confirmed with area dealers and all 2500 series Dodge rams use this recalled linkage from 2003-2008. They all call for the same part number. Also, this was not a problem with just a certain batch of parts. If so, Chrysler would have only recalled the truck with the bad components and replaced them with new components of the same design. I have contacted Chrysler and they told me an authorized Dodge dealer must say this joint is bad so I have scheduled an appointment later this week to have this looked at. I am assuming they will pass it and say there is not a problem so they will not have to replace it. Although, it should not matter if the part is bad or not, because the parts have been redesigned for a safety reason. Chrysler did not want to tell me the reason for the redesign and asked me what I wanted them to do. So I told them to do a recall, fix it under a warranty claim, or give me the part number to replace the one single bad part. I hope you see this as a reason to investigate this recall further.

64 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2008

My 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 had bad tie rods, track bar and steering damper with less than 36000 miles on it. At the point it became apparent, the truck became very unstable and hard to keep on the road. I took it to modica brothers in my town to have it fixed because any dealerships were at least an hour from me and I felt I needed my vehicle fixed as soon as possible. After getting the truck repaired it was brought to my attention that the truck was still covered under warranty. I have contacted Dodge concerning this and was denied coverage because I did not have the truck towed and go to a Dodge dealership to have the truck repaired.

65 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2008

The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. While driving approximately 75 mph, the front end of the vehicle shook violently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the failure was unable to be duplicated. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the driver side tie rod failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was aligned; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000.

66 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

67 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2007

Violent shaking in front end. . . Otherwise known as the "death wobble. " also has a clunk in steering wheel. Have replaced upper and lower ball joints, tie rods, and track bar. Have replaced tires, balanced, and rotate/balance ever 5000 miles. Issue still keeps occurring. Has occurred with two separate sets of tires(load e and load d)shop now saying to replace steering shaft, steering box, shocks, and steering stabilizer. Shop also says Dodge trucks are their best customers.

68 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2007

The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 quadcab 4x4. While the contact was driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle began to wander out of lane without intent. In addition, there was excessive steering wheel play that caused difficultly when turning. The failure occurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer five times for the same failure and the steering gear was replaced twice. In July of 2010, the front end suspension was replaced and the tie rods were replaced at a different time. There was a recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 11v350000 (steering:linkages:tie rod assembly). The contact planned to notify the dealer to verify whether the VIN was eligible under the recall. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 23,558.

69 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2006

2004 Dodge ram pick up had repeated episodes of violent shaking, loss of steering control, and almost flipped over 2 out of the 10 episodes. Happened when driving over 45mph, usually on the highway, and 50% of the time started shaking after hitting a bump in the road. Took the truck to Dodge several times, only to be told that there was nothing wrong with it. We were so terrified to drive it, that we ended up trading it in on another vehicle. Unfortunately, since we paid cash for the truck, we ended up taking a tremendous loss on it. Not to mention the thousands of dollars we spent trying to get it fixed. On one occasion we were stranded a few hundred miles from home, and had to stay at a campground for two weeks until it was " so called fixed". Dodge paid for nothing! after picking the truck up after being in the shop for 10 days, and several hundred dollars later, within 5 minutes of pulling out of the shop and accelerating to 45mph, the shaking became so violent it snapped a tie rod and put me in a ditch. When I called the Dodge dealership that had just fixed it, they wanted to charge me for towing it back to the shop. This was very frustrating! we will never buy another Dodge vehicle. This vehicle is dangerous to both the driver and the other motorists in it's path.
