Six problems related to engine have been reported for the 2006 Dodge Sprinter. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
August 22, 2010, I was on I 25 in my winnebago itasca navion traveling at 60 to 70 mph and suddenly lost power. I stopped, got more diesel and started driving at lower speeds by still lost power and could barely climb hills. I was just limping along with my emergency flashers on hoping I wouldn't be rearended. The model is 2006 with a mercedes/benz 5 cylinder turbo engine with 19,500 miles on it. This is really dangerous. Is there a recall on this engine?.
I was attempting to pass a big slow moving truck going uphill when my van suddenly lost power. Another 18 wheeled truck was behind me also trying to pass the same slow moving truck which was on the right lane. The truck behind me had to slam on his brakes to avoid rear-ending me. I had to wait until the truck which I was attempting to pass, passed me so I could go back to the right lane causing irate motorists behind me and causing a lot of safety concerns. It was extremely dangerous and I was traveling with wife and two kids.

2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500 hc passenger approx. 23k miles, 2 years old, under Chrysler full warranty 1. Vehicle stops running altogether while in drive, total engine cut-out, battery light comes on upon slowing at an intersection, turning a corner at slow rate of speed. You can put van in neutral and immediately re-start it and it runs fine. 2. This tends to happen only in hot weather, in the heat of the day with the rear a/c running full blast. This has been happening randomly for 10 months or more, but never in the winter when not running the a/c. There is no way to predict it. It happened four times this week, many times off and on before that. The van will tend to be "sluggish" sometimes in the same circumstances without dying. 3. We have been trying to correct this failure since this spring. . The dealers cannot fix because they can't "duplicate" the issue. Olathe Dodge in KS has looked at this several times, but the onboard computer does not register a fault, so they cannot identify problem. This issue is not resolved. It is a safety hazard to our family as this is a huge passenger vehicle that dies without notice.
2006 Dodge Sprinter 3500 turbo resonator failures. My wife and I purchased the above unit in the form of a winnebago view. On our first trip we had to cross a small mountain pass in the shenandhoas. A few minutes in to the climb, I noticed the power dropping off. We were already all the way in the right lane, however; the vehicle lost so much power the large trucks also in the right lane had to swerve to avoid hitting the vehicle. We had the vehicle towed to a dealer and they explained that the vehicle had suffered a failure of the turbo resonator and that it would be repaired under warranty. The incident was most unfortunate. While the family trip was pretty much ruined, winnebago did eventually help pay for the rental vehicle costs that we had to absorb to get the family and contents of the RV home until the vehicle was repaired. Unfortunately, we have suffered an identical failure. After looking in to the problem on-line, we discovered that there is a huge community of sprint owners that have suffered the same failure, many of them with multiple failures. This is a dangerous situation which Dodge and mercedes refuse to resolve. The manufacturers need to design a permanent fix for this problem and issue a recall before someone gets killed.
I purchased a 2006 Dodge Sprinter 3500 as a 2007 winnebago view class c motorhome. In about January of 2008 I experienced a sudden loss of power and the plastic turbo resonator was replaced under warranty. On June 6, 2008 on trip from tulsa to frisco, TX again experienced loss of power and another plastic turbo resonator was placed on the vehicle at 4642 total miles. Having had two failures of this resonator within a year and under 5000 miles, I fill there is a serious defect in the original resonator and the improved one that also failed. The last failure occurred on a turnpike and my speeds ranged from 35 mph uphill to 55 mph downhill. A vehicle going that slow and being unable to accelerate to avoid problems is a definite hazard to us and other motorists. From what I hear from Dodge dealers no fix to the problem is anticipated. This is unacceptable!.
