Vehicle was parked in hospital parking lot for about 6 hours. Left hospital and while trying to start vehicle the dashboard information center indicated a no start condition. The engine would not attempt to crank. Thinking my key was faulty, I tried my wife's key. Same result. No crank. Dashboard displayed "start error". An attached device by garmin that reads the computer bus and communicates to the garmin gps had no illumination of it's communications established confidence light. . Since the vehicle was cold I activated the auxillary heater for warrnth. My wife and I sat there for 15 minutes making phone calls and trying to get help. The cabin had warmed up some and I tried to start the vehicle again. I was successful. In trying to research this problem on the Sprinter user forums, I found reference to a screem module having to do with vehicle security. Other users attributed this condition to a "cold solder joint" in the module. Replacing this module requires reprogamming the Smart keys. A substantial cost.
We purchased a 2008 Dodge Sprinter new in 2008. Sprinter vans were produced when mercedes owned Chrysler. These vans were imported by mercedes during this period because Dodge did not have a van of its own. Our complaint is that now that mercedes and Dodge have split, Dodge has told me that since Dodge does not have a Sprinter mechanic tech in montana (where we live) that they can not diagnose the problem and thus can not help with the problem-- thus effectively denying warranty coverage. I have taken the Sprinter to a mercedes Sprinter qualified repair show and they have diagnosed a faulty egr valve which does not allow the turbo to work thus greatly reducing power and potentially damaging the engine and exhaust. Mercedes will naturally not honor Dodge's warranty. There was a recall on this year egr valve however somehow we missed the recall and it has now ended however this should not effect our vehicle warranty. I have spoken twice to Dodge's customer service center and have been told they can not help. I have e-mailed the center asking Dodge to honor their warranty and received an e-automated response stating that Dodge will respond within one working day however this has not happened and I have received no response in three days.
