5 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 1997 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 01/01/2004

Head gasket failed at approx. 72,000 miles. It seems like this is a common problem in Dodge Stratus and Dodge neon based on all the complaints I have read on the internet. I would like Dodge/Chrysler to take some responsibility for the problem, as I was told they are aware a problem exists and have since change the style of gasket used.

7 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 1998 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 05/14/2003

"the famous head gasket failure that nobody wants to touch". Yes, I have a 98 Dodge Stratus that is leaking at the head gasket. I had to buy one of those flat pans to catch the oil in while the car is parked in the garage. My 2 year old got out there the other day and decided to play in the used oil. Is this not a safety issue? having to keep a pan of dirty oil under a car? I drain it once a week and get at least 1 quart. (and have to pay to dispose of it) come on here! so, on top of the fire hazard (hot oil on a hot catalyst), now we have poisoning issues with our children. Is anybody going to help us, or should we just start the whole class action lawsuit? I am sure there are enough people here to back me up on this. According to all of the complaints here, Dodge already knows about it and made a stronger gasket to replace it with.

13 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 1999 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 08/20/2002

Vehicle had developed a constant oil leak. Before taking to dealership for review, we did extensive research on internet & determined that head gasket issues were highly evident in the Stratus. Numerous records also indicated that Chrysler was well aware of issue, although no formal recall had been done. Upon taking to dealer, diagnostic confirmed head gasket needed replacement. Total cost was approx. $700 & we had to pay $511 of it. Prior to paying, made several calls to Chrysler trying to solicit a higher level of assistance on it. Csr reps gave indication that my request was plausible, but dealer service mgr. Continued to only approve orig. $200 of assistance which supposedly Chrysler dist. Mgr. Backed up. I have not been given any satisfaction on trying to contact the dist. Mgr. Ongoing high level of complaints on this same issue should warrant recall and Chrysler backing full cost of repair. I'm continuing with several consumer agencies to recoup my $500, including looking into small claims court.

14 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 1998 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 04/01/2002

My head gasket hasn't totally blown yet but my car is going through a quart of oil a week. I've had the gasket cover replaced and new spark plug wires installed. Oil still coming out . I take care of my car but not through the dealer. I had to replace the rotors at 16000 miles. Albany Dodge said that they could resurface them for $90 a piece. I believe the rotors should not have been messed up at that time.

15 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 1996 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 03/01/2002

This vehicle was purchased in February of 1996. Since the date of purchase the headgasket on the vehicle has been replaced twice and is currently undergoing a third replacement. The first headgasket replacement was at the cost of the customer, the second at the cost of the dealer under a service bulletin agreement. The third replacement cost was turned down by daimler Chrysler but the local dealer offered a discount on labor to the customer for customers repeated business reasons. The head gasket should have never failed a third time after production and installation of the newly designed headgasket for the Chrysler vehicles. Customer requests full compensation for first headgasket replacement and third replacement per faulty design by daimler chysler.

16 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 1999 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 01/07/2002

Head gasket failure, when called the manufacturer they stated that I will only need to pay a deductable and that Chrysler will pick up the rest of the bill. Went on line and noticed this is a wide spread problem with Dodge Stratus'.

17 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 1997 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 01/03/2002

Head gasket failed.

18 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 1998 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 12/15/2001

The head gaskets fail on these cars pre-maturely and oil leaks from the engine spraying oil mist onto the catalitic converter wich could in turn start the vehicle on fire. I have read hundreds of complaints on the internet and have called the daimler-Chrysler recall line and they have no intention on making this problem correct for the consumer. Estimates to repair this defective head gasket have ranged between 700 and 800 dollars. I firmly believe that these vehicles need to be recalled and repaired for free it is clearly a defect in material/workmanship that never happens to cars normally and a fire hazard from the oil mist contacting the very hot catalitic converter. Please help us.

19 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 1998 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 09/20/2001

At approximatly 49,500 miles on my 1998 Dodge Stratus I noticed an oil leak while doing an oil change. I kept a watch on this and determined that the head gasket was where the problem was. At this time I did some research on the internet and found out that there were many complaints and service bulletins on the head gasket on this model and engine size. I then contacted the dealer where the vehicle was purchased and they verified that the head gasket was the problem and that it was going to cost me $600. 00 or more to have the problem fixed. I then did more research into this and found out that there is an excessivly high incident of the head gasket failing on this model in both the 1997 and 1998 years, and when questioning people in the surrounding area found out that nearly every person that has purchased this model and engine combination have had the same failure and most of them with around 50,000 miles. I do not feel that I should have to pay the full amount to repair something that is a known and commen manufacturer problem ( Dodge implemented a new gasket design on the 1999 model year to correct the problem). Also I think that based on the frequency of this failure there should be a full manufacturer recall, this problem also causes a safety concern of the possibility of a fire in the engine compartment due to the severity, and location of the oil leak .

Here it is three years later and it goes again? a call was placed to Chrysler on 02/28/2001, and they even stated that the head gaskets are bad and a new one should do the trick. Why should I have to pay for a second head gasket, when the very first one should have lasted the life of the car. This is absolutely ridiculous.
