1 Wheel Bolts problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2024

The contact's wife owns a 2018 Ford Edge. As the contact's wife pulled into their driveway, the contact heard an abnormal, hissing sound coming from the rear, passenger side tire. The contact used a set of pliers to remove a stone from the tire which caused the tire to deflate. As the contact attempted to replace the tire, the contact discovered that lug nuts on tire had swelled which prevented the lug nuts from being removed with a wrench. The contact called his son to stronger tools which they used to remove the lug nuts off the tire. After the contact placed the spare tire on the vehicle, it was taken to an independent mechanic where they acknowledged the lug nut failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The lug nuts on the other three tires were also tested and the contact experienced the same failure with all three tires. The dealer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to file a complaint. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.

2 Wheel Bolts problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2023

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Edge. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle into the dealer for regular tire maintenance, he was informed that the lug nuts were defective, requiring they be cut off and replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 79,500.

3 Wheel Bolts problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2021

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the front passenger’s side tire experienced a blowout. While attempting to use the lug tool provided with the vehicle, the lug tool failed to fit the lug nuts. The contact called a tow company to assist with replacing the tire with the spare tire. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer and was informed that the lug nuts were swollen. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.
