4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2025

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while his foot was depressing the accelerator pedal, the back of the contact’s foot would strike the brake pedal due to a reduced clearance between the accelerator and brake pedals. The contact stated that failure restricted the ability to properly depress the brake pedal while driving at highway speeds. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA campaign number: 12v319000 (service brakes, hydraulic, structure); and related the failure to the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 124,000.

7 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

December of 2022 - took car to shop due to engine overheat light and oil smell inside vehicle as well as other "codes coming up. Vehicle was repaired. May 2023 had to take car back to shop due to cranking and it immediately saying engine overheating, low coolant, and various other codes as well as brakes not properly functioning. Repair shop said it was low on coolant and added fluid, stated no leaks and returned vehicle. But repair shop shows it pulled 15 codes, including loss of communication with abs control module a as well as 3 other "lost communication with" codes and the engine overheating. The next day we had the same issues and had to put it back in the shop. They flushed system and replaced motor because a bad head gasket caused oil to mix with the water (again). Got the vehicle back July 10th and the traction control and braking felt off as it had before in Dec 2022 but then was fine. Noticed on 7/11 that there appeared to be something in the fluid tank that shouldn't be there (like black chunks) and called the repair shop to see about scheduling another diagnostic. On 7/13 my son was driving from work and the engine suddenly stalled saying overheating when it wasn't showing overheating. Pulled over, started to crank it back up and it was fine. On 7/14 on his was to work, he pulled to the edge of the roadway to miss multiple deer in the road and was unable to steer the vehicle back onto the roadway. The traction control kicked in and he could not steer the car back onto the road, brakes did not work and ended up causing him to crash. I have driven the car a few times when traction control would kick in when it really shouldn't and it would not allow me to steer, accelerate, or really do anything until it shut back off.

8 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2022

Unknown, there are not any warning lights on, my cars rpm jumps when I try to accelerate. As I push the gas it acts as if it does not want to drive and won’t. I’ve had to pull over with hazards and wait for someone to come assist.

9 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2022

I picked my car up tonight from haley’s in farmville va they fixed my door latches due to recall on latches. I told them prior to dropping it off that the abs light and traction control light and engine coolant light keeps coming on. When I pulled out the parking lot I almost got rear ended because the car didn’t want to go it was moving so slow I had to slowly make myself across the road into kfc parking lot without getting hit. Haley refuses to fix these problems bc the light automatically goes off on its own and they say it’s got to physically be on for them to fix it through recall but it keeps coming on whenever I have the car in my possession and it’s very dangerous.

10 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2022

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at 40 mph the contact felt the brake pedal was hard for the contact to slow down the vehicle, the contact had to place both foot on the brake pedal and shifted the gear into neutral and was able to pull to the side of the road until the vehicle slowed down. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, and they stated that the vacuum pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 113,000.

The contact's daughter owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated that her daughter related to her that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle started independently braking without the brake pedal being depressed. The contact’s daughter stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated. The contact's husband drove the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the rear driver’s side wheel speed sensor and abs sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

My 2013 Ford Escape has electrical problems, the biggest issue the gears are jumped. I put it on drive and it gets stuck and then it slows down no power to engine.

16 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2021

Before having a engine replacement due to circumstances I had issues with the turbocharger overboosting after the engine replacement I still have the turbocharger overboosting. On top of the anti-lock brake system brake pedal miss message lost communication with tcm and lost communication with the ecm.

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2021

The abs/traction control light comes on and a message flashes on the screen saying that 4 wheel drive is disabled and that hill assist is disabled. The vehicle will not accelerate when the gas pedal is pressed causing the driver to be put in harm's way if trying to enter traffic or go through an intersection. When hooked up to a scanner, it says that there is a bad abs/wheel speed sensor. We have replaced the "faulty" sensors several times and have also replaced all other parts that were recommended to fix the issue. We took the vehicle to a Ford dealer and they initially said that there was a recall to perform a flash of the computer to fix the issue. When they hooked up their machine to the vehicle, we were told that they were incorrect and that there was no recall for this issue and there was no update for the computer. This is an intermittent issue and we are unable to replicate the issue on demand. This has been an issue for over a year and it seems Ford does not have the answers to fix the issue.

18 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2020

Every winter while driving my 2013 Ford Escape info screen displays "hill start assist not available and abs icon flashes. The radio also goes off and on. I have taken it to two different dealerships to get this corrected and I am told they could not see any codes for this problem. In other words I am lying. I am sure by checking with others, I am not the only one with this problem. I hope that this can be resolved because I don't know if and when this will effect anything else.

19 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2020

Tl-the contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the vehicle was in a driveway and it started to roll backwards. The contact attempted to reenter the vehicle while it was rolling backwards and was knocked out of the vehicle onto the neighborhood street. The vehicle continued to roll and crashed into a trailer in a yard across the street. The contact had scrapes on his arms and legs and recieved treatment for injuries to his shoulder, arm and back. The contact was transported by an ambulance to the emergency room after he was diagnosed at an urgent care center. A police report was filed. The vehicle able to be driven from the scene and parked back in the contact's driveway. The dealer and manufacturer had not been contacted yet. The contact believes the issue may be with the bushing cable not allowing his vehicle to be shifted into park and thus allowed the vehicle to roll. The VIN tool showed no recalls at this time. The failure mileage was 120,000. Tf.

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2020

While driving car, abs/traction control warning lights and error message appeared, city driving, but not affecting drivability. After 20 miles car was parked, and when restarted days later same warnings appear but with additional loss of power steering, making car undrivable. Will be towing it to local Ford dealership.

21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2020

Today after 10 minutes of successful, normal suburban driving, and a stop for lunch, my abs, traction control, hill start assist, and auto 4wd systems all threw warnings of malfunction. The warnings appeared after having been waiting in a drive-through line for about 20 minutes, and power off in the vehicle for about 30 minutes thereafter. Audible and physical indications of problem were thumping noise in right-rear wheel, and difficulty in making forward motion at low speed in a zero-slope parking lot. Visual check found no problems with tire inflation or obstacles in straight path of travel. Manual check of lug-nuts by hand without tools found none loose. After conferring with a local shop I trust, I was able to travel 1/2 mile without incident to their location. Audible and physical indications were present at the beginning of the trip, but all cleared after I got underway. Warnings on dash remained present. Shop was able to reproduce indications, but could not find any cause during detailed visual inspection of chassis and brake systems. I have scheduled an electrical diagnostic on the systems for next week, to attempt to find the cause of this set of conditions. Shop thinks a faulty abs sensor, tone plate, or wiring may be the cause, which makes the brakes engage intermittently without input from the driver.

22 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2020

Car cuts off/looses power also have to constantly put engine coolant in and change transmission fluid engine will run hot, electrical system issues doors unlock, can not drive over 35mph, fuel system putting gas in car will not start automatically have to pump gas pedal causing unsafe travel.

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2019

After service at a Ford dealership, I found I hardly had any braking power when exiting their lot. The brake pedal was extremely hard to depress, and the vehicle would almost coast to a stop. Dealer said it is the vacuum line; a $300+ service. I was lucky as I have read about the entire vacuum pump shearing on other Escapes while being driven.

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2019

Vacuum pump failure. No warning, was driving on an exit ramp from our state turnpike at low speed when brake pedal was very hard to press and in turn, creating a very dangerous situation. I had just stopped to pay a toll about 200 yards prior with no problem. The failure of the vacuum pump coupled with Ford unable to provide a replacement from the incident date of June 6th, 2019 until August 28, 2019 can explain that this is not an isolated incident. Ford edge from the same model years have the same exact problem, with Ford extending the vacuum pump warranty to 150,000 miles or 10 years. This expansion of the warranty should also be applied to the Ford Escape. Will it take someone being injured or worse before the nhsta forces Ford to 'fix' the problem across the board with defective vacuum pumps on their watch?.

25 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

02/03/2019 I purchased the car 12/31/2018. These things occurred in the vehicle when it was stationary, taking off and excelling, in motion, on a city street and on a highway (interstate), driving straight, turning, braking, and on inclines and down hill. It also involves fuel/propulsion, engine, speed control, suspension, wheels. It started with the dash lighting up with no key in it. Then it started a hard idle almost shutting down the vehicle. Since I had it in last week, there is rattling, popping, grinding sounds with grabbing and pulling under the back of the car. Now it is the traction and intelligence control all wheel warnings and shutting down the control on its own. It stalls in traffic while the computer attempts corrections that fail to correct it. It has slid from one side of an off ramp to the other side, because the traction/all wheel intelligence could not get traction. I could not control the car. Grateful there was no one in the other lane. It is putting my life and everyone around me in serious danger of being killed. I have mentioned some of the issues prior to the last service on it and taken it to (purchased from) jarrett gordon Ford winter haven, FL and (work done at) jarrett scott Ford plant city, FL. I am told they can't diagnosis it unless it is doing this with them. I will be taking it back in tomorrow with all the new issues going on with it. It is seriously dangerous and getting progressively worse. I've already had the oil changed, transmission fluid drained and refilled, fuel induction, injector serviced (it did not help with fuel consumption), tune-up, plugs changed (did not help), coolant flush. This needs to be addressed before I die or any others die as a result of this vehicles issues. These liability issues belong to Ford company, not me. All this since I purchased it 12/31/2018 proof of contacting 6 + members of the dealerships.

26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. While driving, the vehicle failed to respond when the brake pedal was depressed and the engine revved high. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 71,000.

29 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2017

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated that coolant was leaking from underneath the vehicle. The coolant detector would not accurately detect the coolant level. The coolant reservoir needed to be refilled weekly. The abs warning system would chime and illuminate whenever the vehicle was started, and the vehicle would fail to move. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle several times, the abs warning light turned off and the vehicle operated as needed. The contact stated that the transmission was slipping out of the park(p) into drive(d). The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the wheel hub bearing needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the wheel hub bearings were replaced four times and the front axles were replaced twice; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

30 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2017

Vacuum pump seized up causing the bolt connecting it to the camshaft to shear off and damage the turbo's and engine. This happened while going 70 mph on a freeway. I had to use evasive action to get it off the road.

31 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2017

Catastrophic loss of braking at 65 mph on highway without warning. Saturday evening April, 29, 2017 on I-85 southbound while slowing from 65 mph to exit at south hill, va driver (daughter) applied brakes and had no power assist. This produced a pedal that was stiff and her entire body weight had to be used to cause any slowing. The vehicle was stopped using the grade of the ramp and e brake. The vehicle had no warning lights or indications of failure. After towing it home Sunday April 30th it was taken to the dealership. They diagnosed a vacuum pump failure. The vacuum pump being solely responsible for the braking system causes immediate loss of braking on failure. The failure was caused by conditions similar to those present in the belt driven vacuum pump on 2011-2012 Ford f-150 ecoboost. Several days later when the dealership attempted to fix the vacuum pump they found that the failure caused the cam core coupler to shear. This allowed metal shards into the oil which then carried them to the engine and turbo damaging both. The dealership came back with an estimate of $6000 for just the repairs with a new engine, however they informed us that the turbo needed to be replaced as well due to the damage. Workers at the dealership reported that the cost to fix the car far outstripped the residual value. Mileage failure was 60,921. Due to the 921 miles Ford has thus far refused to consider any reconciliation. After extensive research we have found that this failure is common among ecoboost engines and may be more prevalent than immediately evident. A braking failure of this magnitude could easily cause serious injuries or fatalities. In the case of most wrecks involving privately owned vehicles thorough investigation of cause is uncommon. If the occupants were unable to recall or communicate the cause of the wreck due to injury or death it would go unreported.

32 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2017

2013 Ford Escape. Consumer writes in regards to sudden braking system malfunction. The consumer stated the brake booster and the vacuum pump failed. The brake booster was replaced. The manufacturer was mad aware, but did not offer any assistance. Updated 10/31/2017.

33 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2016

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. While driving 70 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and failed without warning. The contact was able to slow the vehicle down with the emergency brake and downshifting by manually shifting gears. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the core coupler in the camshaft, which operated the brake booster, fractured inside the camshaft. As a result, the power assist feature in the braking system disengaged. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 59,789.

34 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2016

I was driving out of a mountainous road and all of a sudden, no warning lights, no check engine lights, nothing, the power brakes went. I was able to stop by using the hydraulic system with both feet tromping down on the brake pedal. I have taken my car to the Ford dealer and they said that it was the vacuum power assist contraption that was defective. I haven't gotten my car back (9 days now) because they are saying that the engine does not function properly now and that is isn't the 'fault' of the vacuum power assist device malfunctioning.

35 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2016

Driving @ 70mph, get ready to make a turn by slowing down. Push on the brake to stop and there is no power assist. Overshoot corner and finally stop approximately 100 feet past where I needed to turn. Driving on rural roads is the only reason I was not in an accident. I still had 20 miles to go to get home. Had it towed to a Ford dealer. They say the vacuum pump has failed. There was no warning or indication of this failure.
