1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2019

Over the past 3 years I have had the issue of 'stop safely now' on multiple occasions. These issues didn't start until the mec pump was replaced under a recall. After that my 2005 Escape Hybrid will shut down while driving or not start or cut out the hybrid power and run on engine only. I took it to the local Ford dealership where we have gotten all other service done three times for these issues. They haven't been able to tell me anything, stating only that there are no codes, so no idea where to look. I couldn't understand how the computer can know to tell me to stop driving the car, yet not record a dtc. It happened again on the first warm day of the summer - drove across town, parked it, came back 20 minutes later and it wouldn't start, showing 'stop safely now'. I left it until the next morning and it started right up and I drove it home. I went out and bought scanxl and used my laptop to scan the car. I found p1a10, p1a14, p0a0a, and p0a95. If I can buy some consumer program and find this info, way is Ford telling there are no codes? Ford also replaced the battery fans two years ago, stating they were covered under some recall or warranty. Searching the internet gets me 100's of comments on this stop safely issue with dozens of possible causes depending on the year and model. My scan tool shows a battery voltage of 665 volts, though it's supposed to be a 300 volt battery. The hybrid evaporator temp can range between 220 and 310 degrees f when it's running ok. That can't be normal. I have no idea what's going on and can't get any help from the Ford dealer.

2 Equipment problem

Car turns off while driving message on dash says to stop safely now car will start up again after waiting a while. Car stopped while on freeway barely made it to the shoulder.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2017

I was about 115 miles into a 130 mile trip, doing 70 mph on the interstate, when out of no where my vehicle jerked very hard and then started making loud sounds like parts falling out. All of the cars behide me had to slam on breaks and avoid hitting me. No lights or warnings had come on until after this happened. I steered the car off of the interstate and down the ramp into a store parking lot. The car was not running hot. Looked under car and oil was coming out all over the ground. A man looked and said it looked like the coolant system messed up and it through a rod in the motor block. I got the car one month ago and it was doing great. By looking up on type car there is others having problems like this and recalls on the coolant system. But no one on my VIN. Recall 14v526000.

4 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2016

Displayed "stop safely now" while driving on interstate. I pulled over and turned engine off. Restarted and drove a few miles and received notice again. Repeated this cycle about 10 times before I was finally able to make it home. Had dealer service car and do a battery fan recall. Drove okay for a month but now I am getting the same error and having to shut the vehicle down and restart.

5 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/29/2016

Vehicle has 95,000 miles on it and the entire back passenger rear well is completely rusted out, so much so that the shock is pushing up into the inside of the vehicle. The rest of the wheel wells are fine and show very little wear and the vehicle runs just fine. When doing some research on this issue, it appears that a multitude of people are encountering this very same issue with just that same specific spot. My fear is that this makes this very unsafe to drive in the event I hit a large bump or pot hole.

6 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2014

Early sept 2014 - began to experience intermittent issues of "limp home" mode. Originally, issue began with small "surges" in acceleration that I believed were simply related to the hybrid engine kicking into gear. Then experienced multiple but random "limp home mode" events, particularly when stopping at lights or accelerating (light-mod pressure) from a full stop. Car would flash "service engine soon" and not go above 20mph and sometimes not that. Would pull off if able, otherwise, would have to stop with flashers in the middle of the road, turn off the engine, wait a minute, and then restart (rebooting car). This would clear the check engine light and car would resume normal operation - of note: codes would not stay in the history of the computer. After several occurrences, managed to "limp home" to a mechanic while the light was on and pull codes between 2009-2012 and was advised to have the computer reprogrammed by Ford service. Car began limping home during full traffic and full acceleration (not stopped or slowing), causing a massive safety concern. Noted multiple investigative mentions on internet regarding 2005-2012 etb issues, but also noted this was then only "replaced" for 2009-2012. Apparently, anything older than 09 is a lost cause. 10/23/14 - have car in Ford service and recall (14s19) has been noted regarding motor electronics coolant pump causing "a failure mode effects management strategy that can result in a sudden partial or full loss of motive power" to protect vehicle powertrain. Being charged for diagnostic even though there is a recall on the part that is likely causing the problem.

I am an owner of a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. Within the past week, the right rear fender wall completely rusted through. When I drove my car, it sounded like a series of small bombs were going off in the back anytime I hit a hole. When I took the car into get fixed, it cost $1064. 62. Ford will not reimburse me for a penny of this. I am not the only one facing this exact same problem. . Read more...

8 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2014

I was driving my daughter home and pulling to a stop sign the brake and abs light as well as the service notification showed up and it became very difficult to brake. After taking it to the dealership I was informed that the hcu and control module assembly were defective.

Noticed a loud banging noise in the back passenger side. Looked in wheel well and it is completely rusted out. You can see right through the car. Took it to the repair shop and they told me they have seen many exact scenarios. Shock is attached in a way that it rubs against the wheel well causing corrosion. . No other rust on the vehicle and it is stored in the garage. I am the original owner and have given scheduled maintenance and repair. In looking further in to this it is a common complain. Clearly a design flaw. A recall is needed as this is a huge safety issue. The wheel can fall right off = and that will cause serious injury, please investigate.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2013

I noticed an unusual sound from the right rear end of my 2005 Escape Hybrid a couple of weeks ago and was only able to look at it today. I was amazed to find the wheel well had rusted out at the attachment point of the shock and the upper part of the shock is hanging free. Then I looked at the other side and it is starting to go. Clearly the vehicle is unsafe to drive in this condition. I was hoping to keep the vehicle a few more years but it looks as though without major reconstruction it is junk at this point in time. Clearly the vehicle is out of warranty but it does not seem to me that the degree of failure seen here is unexpected under normal conditions especially in that I have owned the car since new and it has been well maintained. In a brief search of the web I have found that other escape owners have experienced this problem and that Ford is aware of this. I am concerned that with a potential for catastrophic failure Ford did not notify the owners to check for this problem.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2013

I was driving home on a Saturday morning with my little daughter in the back seat, when I got the shock of my life as my car, all of a sudden, stopped and went dead. I was lucky to have no traffic and that I was going relatively slow, so I got to a complete halt without any problems. I had to wait until the car cooled down and then was able to restart it to drive home, I was only one block from my house. I did not dare driving it until I got it to the mechanic two days later. The Ford repair shop replaced the mecs pump the motor electronics cooling system pump refill and retest for $304. 54 in parts plus $443. 00 in labor. Only this year, in March 2015, did I find out about the safety recall of a part. Since I did not immediately recognize the part question, I had to make an appointment for an inspection. The inspection just happened this week and confirmed my car was now fine. I also found out that I had already paid for the recalled part myself. I sent a complaint letter to Ford motor company/board of directors for a refund the same day I filed this complaint with you.

12 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2011

Master cylinder on 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid failed - 73940 miles on car. Mostly city & highway driving - no racing or other kind of driving.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2005

I pulled out of a parking lot driving our new 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid and approached the first intersection when a message flashed on the dash "pull over safely now. " before I could pull over the engine turned off. After a few tries, I was able to move the car on the battery power through the intersection (very slowly) to a busy bus stop. I couldn't start the car again right away. However, on battery power again, I was able to get back to the parking lot. We had the car towed to a Ford dealership from there. It took them two weeks to figure out what was wrong and fix the car. When the incident happend, the car had 260 miles on it.
