Tl the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated while driving 65 mph, the steering wheel failed to move. The power steering failure message was displayed on the instrument panel. The electric power steering assist has failed creating dangerous driving conditions. The vehicle was in motion on the interstate when this occurred. Ford has recalled a number of Ford escapes for this issue, but not all models that are affected, including my vehicle.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving 40 mph, the power steering failed and the steering wheel became extremely difficult to steer left or right. Paul miller Ford in lexington, kentucky was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was no longer under recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that, because the vehicle was previously repiared under manufacturer recall number: 14s05, a second repair would not be free. The failure mileage was approximately 202,000.
. In 2012 and 2013, I had power steering failures while driving, luckily resulting in no collisions. Both times I took my vehicle into a Ford dealer. Both times, I was told that nothing was wrong with my vehicle. In 2014, Ford issued a recall for a faulty sensor in the power steering. I immediately brought my Ford to my dealer for service. Instead of replacing the steering column, they choose a 2nd option (cheaper) and simply reprogrammed/ rebooted the sensor. On July 21st, 2017, I parked my car and when I came out a started the car, I had no power steering. I was lucky I wasn't on the highway. I had the car towed to a local service center and they told me that according to the computer the same part failed again. They re-set the sensor and we took the car into our Ford dealer to have it serviced for the recall. Both the Ford dealer and Ford na toll free service center (I spoke to darren in August 8th) told me that because Ford had already performed the recall service that they will not honor this issue as part of the recall. However, since the Ford dealer took the cheaper option and reprogrammed the sensor, Ford should honor the recall and replace the steering column. This is the service that our Ford dealer stated is now required to fix the issue. We are faced with spending thousands of dollars or driving essentially an unsafe vehicle because Ford was allowed to offer this 'cheaper' recall service to Ford owners. It's a disgrace.
Received a safety recall notice 14s05. Took to local dealership who performed sensor reset. Two thousand miles later the power steering failed while driving and the vehicle lurched to the right nearly hitting a cyclist in bike lane and startling me as I was barely unable to manhandle to now manual steering vehicle to avoid the collision. I am quite strong and it is likely anyone w/less body strength would not have been able to command the vehicle. That is when I reviewed the voluminous complaints filed and determined Ford is completely unwilling to accept responsibility for what was a faulty part subjecting to owners to great risk of injury. It appears based on my research that the recall service done was a farce and waste of time for consumers w/no real reduction of safety risk. Furthermore, it seems the NHTSA is weak in response to the safety risk and not requiring Ford to replace the part and reduce the chances of a serious vehicle crash.
Remedy recall 14s05 -- power steering control module (pscm) software update performed (as directed) did not adequately remedy the safety defect (the torque sensor itself) and may in fact cause further issues with the vehicles power steering. Ford currently does not provide assistance for repairs under the safety recall. Perhaps they are waiting for more injury /civil lawsuits before addressing these critical safety concerns. The NHTSA also partly shares the blame for this . . . After issuing recall 14v-284 (voq 10670665), they have been informed of the continued pscm issues and have neglected to grant a decision that directly addresses the steering wheel torque sensor defect. Shame on you. Date of recall performed on 9/3/2014 at odo 116,044. Electric power steering assist failure observed and taken into dealership on 1/11/2017 at odo 139,151. Ford customer care denied assistance in replacing the torque sensor as noted in recall 14s05. I was told, "the recall addressed the software issue, not the defective part(s) and too much time has elapsed for our company to help you pay for the repair. " Ford would rather its drivers (vehicles) operate in condition that is unsafe and at an increased risk of crash or injury, than go the extra mile to ensure the safety concern is resolved. Seeing as other petitioners have had the same issue and this is an open and ongoing investigation, myself and other drivers would appreciate an expedited response from the NHTSA to reconcile and re-mediate this issue. Thank you.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving approximately 75 mph, the power steering assist faulty message suddenly displayed. Also, the power steering suddenly failed and caused the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously repaired per a recall for the same failure in November of 2014. The recall information was not available. The failure mileage was 154,000.
My 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid has a power steering recall out. The vehicle was taken in to a local dealership to be repaired in accordance with the recall. However, within three days the power steering shut off without warning. The point of the recall was to address this issue of sudden power steering shutoff without warning. After talking with the dealership, they acknowledged that the recall does not adequately address the problem and multiple customers have complained that the power steering is still failing after being "fixed" in accordance with the recall. There are 1. 1 million vehicles affected by this recall and Ford has yet to properly address the issue. This recall has been in effect since may 2014 and the problem is not being fixed.
Local Ford dealer complied with Ford recall notice two months ago on steering column. They said there were no problems with the sensor. Last weekend, "power steering assist fault" light came on. Never before hand a problem with steering or had ever seen this indicator light. Within 24 hours of first seeing the warning light, the power steering failed completely. I took it to the dealer yesterday. This morning the dealer tells me I need to replace the steering column, to be paid for by me personally, as it is not covered by this recall (which incidentally stated it would replace the steering column if necessary). Approx. Cost $1200, which I have authorized. Googling around the internet, it seems I am not alone.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the power steering failed causing the steering wheel to seize. The vehicle was previously taken to the dealer where the techniciansmade unknown repairs to the vehicle. The problem did not recur until recently. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 62,000.
The first time this occurred was approximately 5 months ago (est. 132k miles) while driving in city traffic, I swerved and brake quickly to avoid a road hazard (large pothole) estimated speed was under 20 mph. The power steering failed and the vehicle continued to run in electric (hybrid) mode and was able to muscle it off to the side of the road. Restarting the engine resolved the issue and the car has been fine until two weeks ago. The second time was in late November, mileage 135k, was slowly turning into a traffic circle at approx. 10 mph, without warning power steering failed the same as the previous time. I was able to stop and restart the car which restored the power steering. After the second experience I did some research online and am seeing that this is a known issue and has been reported to your agency (three different web sites with multiple complaints). I find it hard to believe that a recall has not required - someone will get hurt if this happens at highway speed to an inexperienced driver. I have worked as a professional mechanic and have a decent comprehension of vehicle systems (1974 - 1995), my comments are based on years of experience. I have not verified this, but one of the web posts states that Toyota experienced the same issue and did a recall. . Read more...
I started the vehicle to leave my office at the end of the day and noticed a tugging sensation at the steering wheel. On the freeway, it seemed fine, but when I slowed to a stop I could feel it again. The next day, the power steering completely failed. It was like driving a tank. There were no warning lights on the dash display. My Ford dealer replaced the electronic steering column at a cost of $1,374. 40. The vehicle was no longer under warranty due to the mileage, but is only 4 years old.
While driving normally at 40 mph on a straight good road the steering wheel began kicking right to left abruptly. Almost like a big right left vibration. This lasted for several minutes before the power steering completely failed and made the steering difficult to control. I pulled to the side of road. Turned off the car and restart and took it immediately to the Ford dealer. Dealer said the electic power steering units were back order 5 - 8 weeks because many failures. This is a safety issue and people could die with the power steering failures. Please recall them before somebodies dies.
I have a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving downhill and while braking, power steering seemed to fail completely for 3-5 seconds. Steering did not lock completely, it seemed, but it took real strength to move it as I was going around a gentle curve. I'm not sure my wife could have done same. Potentially very dangerous. Car is with dealership now.
