36 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/20/2013

I was driving at approximately 45mph when my vehicle lost speed, and would not respond to pressure to the gas. As I coasted to the side of the road, I had to shut the vehicle off and back on to get it to work. I have had it happen a dozen times since then. In a parking garage, at low speeds, on the interstate at 70mph.

37 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2012 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/31/2013

In both incidents and there were two I was driving about 10 mph or less when the vehicle just accelerated and I was unable to stop it using the brakes. In the first incident there was a vehicle in front of me and one coming at me in the other lane to I swerved to the right and was forced to jump a curb flattening the tires and damaging the wheels. After about5 15 seconds the vehicle just slowed ad returned to normal operation. I took the vehicle to the dealer where I bought it lou fusz Ford in chesterfield , mo to have repairs made but they were unable to determine any problems. In the 2nd incident I was on a residential street when again the vehicle just accelerated and I was unable to control it striking a mailbox and basketball upright. Again this continues for about 15 seconds and then it just slowed to normal. I contacted Ford after both incidents and they denied any responsibility. Now I am stuck with this vehicle. I can't in good conscience sell it to another individual and the value in trade to the dealer where I bought it is next to nothing with these accidents on its record. Please advise if you can help me. Thank you.

38 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

Driving approximately 35-40 mph for about 15 minutes. Suddenly vehicle lost power and would not accelerate. A "wrench" warning light on the instrument cluster also illuminated, which has never occurred in the past. I have owned the vehicle since new and have never had any engine related problems. Maximum speed was now 22-25 mph. Pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor did not increase engine speed or vehicle speed. Engine rpm was around 1500-1800 rpm according to tachometer. Due to faster traffic slowing behind me I had to pull to the side of the road for safety. Engine continued to operate but would not work properly. I turned the vehicle off, waited a minute and restarted the engine. Wrench light came on again and I had a scary drive back at 25 mph with my kids in the car and traffic speeding around me. Woke up early the next morning to bring in for service and the wrench light was now off and the engine worked normally. It has been 4 days since and the problem has not reappeared. Problem is I am now afraid to drive on the highway or for long distances, and my wife will not drive the vehicle at all.

39 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/03/2013

While traveling at highway speed, the car suddenly loses all power and the stop safely now light comes on in the dash. I had to pull over quickly while avoiding being killed by highway traffic. No warning at all. During my road trip, this happened 3 times on the highway. During my return trip, it happened 3 more times. Problem will only occur at highway speeds and during long road trips. My 20-min drive to work has no issues. This is a serious safety problem and a flawed design on Ford's part. My family and I could have been seriously injured or killed during any one of the six times the car mysteriously died on the highway. From my research, this problem can be caused by several components and is difficult to diagnose in the shop. For older models, there has been TSB's issued, but not for 2008 and later models. I have known several 2008 models that experienced the same problem around 60,000 - 70,000 miles. Browsing though this website shows many have complained about this issue. Ford needs to address this ASAP before someone gets killed or injured on the highway.

40 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/24/2013

Recently while driving, my dashboard suddenly displays a red triangle with an exclamation point in it and advises me to "stop safely now. " regardless of whether I can stop safely or not, I lose power suddenly. This has happened many times, and I have been informed that this is a generic warning that covers numerous car problems. Unfortunately, I do many miles on the highway at higher speeds. Ignoring the past couple of years when this has happened, and I made complaints to this site then, the most current bouts have occurred when I was in very heavy commuter volume on the same highway that is currently under construction with no shoulders. I lose power, without even the opportunity to at least get out of the middle lane. This severely disrupts traffic, and I have almost been rear-ended numerous times. What's worse is, I have taken it to a Ford dealership and they have not been able to identify the problem. I have had numerous things fixed, but I still have this problem. This is not safe, and most likely, one day I will be injured because of it. I would rather have the option of ruining my vehicle by driving it when I shouldn't then to not have the option of getting out of harms way. I understand that other years of escapes were recalled for this problem, so why not mine? thank you.

41 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/31/2013

While driving home from work on the highway this afternoon my car suddenly jolted to a stop while traveling at 65 mph on a major us highway. The car flashed a "stop safely now" message on my dash and I had to coast to the end of the exit as I get off on a left handed exit. I believe this is a safety issue and from reading several posts online I have learned I am not the first. Ford should be held liable for fixing/diagnosing this issue as it is a safety concern for the general public.

42 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/30/2013

When you engage the vehicle into drive, after few minutes the service ranch light goes on. The issue is that my SUV Ford escape is stalling while in motion or suddenly surging forward when accelerating from a stop. After having my dealership and outside mechanic review the issue. The root cause was identified to be faulty throttle body. Apparently a common issue among Ford escapes.

43 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/28/2013

Drove 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid into parking space and came to a complete stop. Front wheels were turned slightly to the right as a result of turning into the parking space. Car suddenly lunged forward, went up and over curb in front of car, and hit a parked car several feet away before vehicle could be stopped. Incident occurred in daylight and good weather conditions. No previous issues with vehicle. Highly unlikely to be driver error - driver in 50's is very careful and prior to this incident had perfect driving record for decades.

44 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/27/2013

This is the second time now this has happened. I reported the first time to you guys about a year ago. I'll have to look at my paperwork I can't keep track of the problems with this vehicle. Yesterday morning I was driving to the dmv here in town. Just as I was coming around the corner a block from the dmv the escape started stalling/"heaving. " I let up on the gas and the escape continued to heave for a couple of seconds then the engine felt like it was close to normal again. I pulled into the dmv parking lot and as I braked to park in a space the escape started stalling/heaving again and the vehicle shut off. I sat there for half a mi ute and decided I would try to drive the short distance to the Ford dealership. I turned the engine on and the vehicle immediately started to stall/heave again. I put the vehicle in reverse and as I backed out of the space I could feel the engine become somewhat normal again. Drove straight to the Ford dealership.

45 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/15/2013

2006 Ford Escape Hybrid. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle completely lost all power while driving. Smd the consumer also stated a red triangle appeared on the instrument panel.

46 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/28/2012

Car started and after backing out and moving forward, stop engine now message came on with a red triangle on dash. Slowly moved to a parking space. Turned engine off and waited for one minute and restarted. Message was gone and car driven home. Brought to dealer following week with description of problem. They diagnosed as a failure of the throttle body and replaced the throttle body and assembly at cost of $629. Read in other complaints that problem resurfaces later. Happy that I was not traveling on freeway when the problem occurred. Considering frequency of this and other problems related to shutdown and hybrid, should a recall be issued?.

47 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/16/2012

Driving up to a stop sign when I felt like I had no brake control to stop. I had to depress the pedal as far as I could and prayed that I would stop before the busy intersection. When I came to a stop, the service brake system code came on and chimed. The abs light was lit, along with brake warning. Luckily we were only a few blocks from the house, that we were able to carefully make it back home. After taking the vehicle in for a brake system warning before where they diagnosed a faulty wiring harness and replaced at my expense. Now that we were able to get the vehicle to the dealership they have stated that the hydraulic control unit was a problem and possibility of the master cylinder. All this at a cost of $4500+ parts and labor. After just finishing paying off the vehicle loan we own a vehicle that doesn't stop. Had I crashed the vehicle I'd only be out my deductible. Thanks Ford! I regret purchasing this vehicle after hearing of other owners experiencing the same issue, with no help from Ford on repairing a device thats meant to provide safety.

48 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/05/2012

I am sitting on I-95 in connecticut and almost got into an accident. My truck just stopped. The red triangle with the explanation point came on and the car flashed "stop safely". All systems are normal. This has happened 3 times this trip and I'll be lucky to get home alive.

50 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/27/2012

I have received a "stop safely now" message from my hev on two seperate occasions. Both times while traveling on the interstate at speeds of 65 - 75 mph. On both occasions, the message occured after a couple of hours of travel. Luckily, the first time it happened we were on a one lane highway, but the second time we were traveling in the high speed lane and had to try to cross three lanes of traffic to pull over. When the message occurs the SUV loses acceleration. It immediatley drops your speed to 60 mph and continues to decelerate and you can't speed up if you try. Try crossing a four lane highway with a speed limit of 70 mph when you can't even do 60 mph. This is a serious safety issue and Ford should recall the vehicles immediately and replace whatever suspected part is cauing the problem. The message boards are full of the same stories. It's only a matter of time and someone will get rear ended trying to cross the highway to stop safely now and when they say now, they mean it.

51 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/27/2012

While traveling on an interstate hwy at 70 mph and passing a semi, the engine shut off and the stop safely now warning came on. There was no warning, I lost speed and barely moved out of the way of the truck. This failure almost cost me and my passenger our lives. The car started again about half an hour later but only ran long enough to limp to a gas station. We called aaa, had the car towed to a dealership where they diagnosed it as either the ignition switch or the pcm. . . I have two sons who are top mechanics. This is not the problem. They believe a wiring harness for the hybrid battery is defective, and that there was a letter sent to all hybrid owners. I took this letter to the local dealership when I received it. They said it didn't pertain to my vehicle and did not perform the required maint. Really? this is a serious safety hazard. How many accidents, deaths, or near misses must happen before Ford reacts and actually owns up? fyi blogging is out there for us all!.

52 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/25/2012

Driving on the interstate and the car shuts down displaying a stop safely now error. . . . Apparently a faulty pump. The same pump that we've already replaced 3 times. . . . . Not only is this annoying but it's a huge safety problem. The vehicle loses all power!.

53 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/13/2012

I purchased my vehicle from texas motors Ford, fort worth, TX on or about July 13, 2011. Approximately three months later, I began having trouble with the vehicle when, on October 24, 2011, after coming to a stop in my garage, the vehicle switched from electric power to gas power and lunged forward into the cabinet on the front wall of my garage, despite depressing the brake pedal, which depressed all the way to the floor. I took my (had it towed) vehicle back to the dealer for repairs on the same day. The service manager had advised me over the phone not to drive the vehicle. At that time, the dealership stated that they could find no problem with the car, but had repaired the damage to the vehicle. About ten months later (August 13, 2012), as I was pulling into a parking spot at my surgeon's office at 7257 hawkins view dr. (harris sw), fort worth, TX, the vehicle, after I was stopped, again surged into gas mode, jumped the curb and ran into the doctor's office building, doing structural damage to the building and the window directly in front of the car. We took 35 photos of the vehicle and building at that time.

54 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/22/2012

This is the second of two incidents where power was lost and the car became unresponsive. First, was one week prior driving from la to san diego at 5pm. We got a flat on the highway in irvine CA. We pulled over and changed the tire but when we started the engine it would not start. The lights came on but with a warning light to "stop safely now". I thought this was from the tire and pressed the reset button but the warning would not clear. We jumped the car once and were unsuccessful, we jumped it again and again nothing, we towed the vehicle to a mechanic and the tow truck tried to jump it again and this time the lights would not come on. We jumped while holding the button for the high voltage battery which we found out about in the manual but the car would not start. We paid the tow and called for a ride home. I missed work and my mother took me back to la to wait for the car. The mechanic replaced the battery. I waited 8 hours for the mechanic to say that the car needed to be taken out of a safety mode and that this can't be done manually in the event it happened again. The next week, after pulling out of the driveway to go home Sunday night the red triangle light came on and warned me to "stop safely now" and then I could not accelerate past 20mph and then 10mph as I slowed to pull over. I killed the engine, waited ten min. And restarted but the car would not accelerate and the light came on again. I waited until midnight to be towed to the dealer, got a ride, and I am now on the bus until something can be done. After researching other complaints I am sad to find that this problem is common, it is unresolved, it is dangerous for a safety mechanism to cause the driver to suddenly lose power, and it is inconvenient to be stranded and unable to troubleshoot the car if there is nothing wrong with the engine and it is a computer malfunction.

55 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/06/2012

Traveling on freeway at approximately 70 mph. Without warning, engine completely shut down. Chime sounded and warning message appeared on dashboard saying "stop safely now. " red triangle with exclamation point in center appeared on dash. I was informed by Ford service department during repairs that this is a known failure problem as related in Ford TSB 09-18-6, affecting similar vehicles up to 2007.

56 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/13/2012

While driving I noticed a lack of power and got the message "stop safely now". As the manual stated I pulled over, waited a few minutes. The car started up again but the event kept happening all the way home. I brought the car to a dealer who made a repair costing 642 dollars. The car ran fine for a month but when on a major highway I had the same experience except it was more difficult to deal with the loss of power in busy traffic. I was in the passing lane to allow another car enter the highway from an on ramp when it happened and I was lucky to be able to cross three lanes of traffic to bring the car to rest. Again, it happened all the way home causing me to finally drive in the breakdown lane with flashers on. I went online and learned that this is an ongoing problem with Ford hybrids. My question is why no recall on such an expensive and dangerous problem?.

57 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid

58 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/12/2011

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that the stop safely now warning message illuminated on the dashboard. The vehicle then began to decelerate independently and stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they replaced the throttle body. The contact failure recurred eight months after the throttle body replacement. The failure mileage was 96,000 and the current mileage was 107,800.

59 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/21/2011

My vehicle was running perfectly and had just been serviced. I was driving with my wife and children in mild conditions when the "stop safely now" message appeared at the same time the vehicle lost all power and was in a glide. We luckily made it to the side of the road as we were traveling in the number 1 lane furthest from any place to stop. We were nearly killed by a truck trying to get over to the side of the road. This has happened on 3 other occasions in the following months. All instances but one were on the highway. All put me in a very dangerous situation.

60 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/28/2011

While driving eastbound on i70 through kansas, my 2011 Escape Hybrid lost power to the drive train. Without warning, the engine started racing as if it had shifted into neutral. While coasting, I put the car into neutral and then back to drive. It continued to be unresponsive to my stepping on the accelerator pedal. I coasted to a stop on the shoulder of the highway. I did not notice any indicator warning at the time, although in subsequent similar events, the “stop safely hazard warning” light came on. I turned the ignition off and restarted. The car showed no sign of any problem. I put the car in gear and drove on without further trouble. The dealer found no problem with the car and suggested that the problem was somehow a random occurrence that was unlikely to happen again. As I discovered, it happened over and over again, but only on long trips, and the service people could not replicate the problem. Most recently the car failed as described no less than 16 times on a 1300 mile trip this summer.

61 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

Veh shows a caution sign (exclamation in triangle) with a warning (pull vehicle over safely and turn off engine). Veh loses all acceleration and I must pull over immediately to avoid an accident. Happens every time we drive on the freeway only, never on a side street or in stop and go. I pull vehicle over and turn off engine for approx 2 or 3 minutes, and it starts right up. Some times it will happen multiple times within a 20 to 30 minute time period, sometimes only once in several hours of driving. Dealer has no idea why and requires a tow immediately when it happens to determine cause. Cannot tow when on the way to dr, out of town, or other.

62 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/14/2010

While driving on the freeway at 65 mph the power cut out and a warning was displayed on the dash to pull over safely. I was able to restart the car and continue driving, but it happened again. I had to have the car towed to Ford. The Ford dealer had to replace the throttle body and motor assembly. This is very dangerous.

63 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/19/2010

Driving home, on highway 880, 110 miles from home, our car loses all power, accelerator stops working completely. We coast to the side of the highway. Turn key to off position, start it up again. As we drive off - absolutely no warning - car stops working again and again. This occurred over a dozen times. Losing power on highway, we hit the hazard lights and try to maneuver over to the side of the road, coasting. The worst was coming over 152, hecker pass. Nowhere to pull over. We lost power many, many times with absolutely no warning. It turns out the car needed a new transmission cooling pump. There is a TSB (08-24-5) out on this car stating that "this condition may result in reduced power as the system activates fail safe operation. " there is no "reduced power" - there is absolutely no power! very unsafe. We are lucky to have survived the drive home. Ford is very aware of this part being defective and has designed a completely different transmission cooling pump (found "on the shelf") to replace the ones that are defective and going bad in the cars they sold. I bought this brand new 2007 Ford escape and feel my safety has been compromised by Ford not recalling this part that causes such an extreme "fail safe" mode as stopping my car on the highway, repeatedly. I have the "old" transmission cooling pump that was removed from my car that stopped working. I think that Ford should reimburse us for the cost diagnostic work and replacement of the new part, including labor. My back has been in spasms for 3 days now because of the stress from the drive home that took almost 5 hours. I would like Ford to reimburse us for the repairs of $554.
