Automatic Transmission Column Shift problems of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Three problems related to automatic transmission column shift have been reported for the 1998 Ford Expedition. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Automatic Transmission Column Shift problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2003

Shift linkage cable broke, between shift lever and transmission.

2 Automatic Transmission Column Shift problem

Failure Date: 01/15/1999

Took vehicle to dealer because electronic four wheel drive high system whould randomly just disengage while driving. Continues to do so today, and dealer says Ford is aware of this problem and might be working on a fix for this model year. Supposedly a problem for many people.

3 Automatic Transmission Column Shift problem

Failure Date: 07/21/1998

While traveling at approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly went into 4wd low, bring the vehicle to a near stop. When vehicle was cranked the next morning, by the tow truck driver, he noticed that the 4wd indicator was on eventhough the switch was not in that position.
