16 problems related to equipment have been reported for the 1998 Ford Expedition. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2015

My husband was parked in our driveway. He switched the truck from park to reverse as he does to slowly back up, without accelerating, the truck accelerated at full force in reverse and he went clear through our garage door which bent, crushed and DE-hinged, the garage door was then pushed back into his motorcycles and into the framing of the house causing mass destruction. The car would not stop, the gear would not switch into park and the breaks would not work. The vehicle could not be stopped from accelerating at top speed in reverse into my home. There is burn out marks in my garage from where the wheels were spinning full speed, there is a tailpipe burn mark where the truck was launched into the garage door. The vehicle clearly failed mechanically and in the process of that there is mass destruction to my home, our vehicle, our bikes and a ton of stuff in the garage. Thank god my husbands injuries did not result in death and thank god my children were not in the garage as they usually are when we are outside. There is no way my little 3 year old would have survived this. I feel very unsafe and will never drive this car again.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2014

I stopped the vehicle at my garage and placed it in park so I could unload groceries. I left the car ignition on and exited the vehicle to put the groceries in the garage. I unloaded one bag and returned to the vehicle for the second bag and as I walked up to it, the vehicle started moving backwards slowly I panicked. I attempted to get into the auto to apply the brake, the vehicle then started moving quicker before I was securely in it. As the auto increased speed I lost my footing and fell out and was run over by the Expedition, and neighbors called the ambulance and I was taken to the hospital and treated by the trauma team in the emergency room and admitted for my injuries a right broken ankle, 9 broken ribs, and a broken wrist.

5 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

While I was diving around 35 mph to 45 mph a horrible violent shake starts to occur. And is very difficult to accelerate especially once you hit the freeway very unsafe to drive at such speeds. It starts with a violent shake with loud noises coming from the exhaust. It has blown 2 coils already.

6 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2014

The vehicle rolls when in park. It makes a loud grinding sound while it is rolling unlike a parking pawl makes. I have not gotten any recall notices on this issue.

7 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2014

When it rains everything inside goes dead and it will not crank. Can be going down the road and it shuts off on you . This will continue for a few days until everything dries out or its not damp outside anymore. I have looked this up on computer and it looks like it is coming back to the fuse panel getting wet because of poor drainage coming from windshield , some people are saying that it has caused fires. Ihave only owned this vehicle for 11/2 years and don't know if there has been any recalls or anything fixed on it. Please let me know . Thanks. Michelle russell.

8 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2012

While driving down the road, my 98 Ford Expedition spark plug blew out and caused a small fire in the engine compartment.

9 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2012

While driving through a parking lot the drive shaft dropped out. It was later determined the rear lower trailing support arms on both the left and right side had rusted through causing them to break apart. This resulted in the rear axle shifting and the drive shaft snapping away from the rear axle. If this happened at a high speed this incident could have resulted in loss of life, severe injuries and property damage.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2005

98 Ford Expedition. . . Left rear spark plug blew out of motor.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2005

A loud clanking noise started coming from the trailer hitch while driving. The trailer hitch came apart, but the driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over. Driver was able to drive the truck home, and will call the manufacturer the next day for appointment.

12 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2000

Vehicle experienced failure of the recall component prior to notification (00v-073), bolts became loose and problems with towing as a result of hitch failure.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/26/1999

While driving about 55 mph and towing a 10 foot trailer, four bolts on the passenger's side of the trailer hitch fell out which made the trailer and the trailer hitch drop down to the highway. All four bolts on the other side of the trailer hitch were loose. The problem was reported to the dealership. The trailer hitch was repaired by the dealer at the expense of the owner.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/15/1998

The bolts holding the trailer hitch receiver to the frame came loose to the point they almost fell from their holes. If this would have happened when pulling a trailer there would have been a disaster with a loose trailer on the highway. The dealer nor the Ford customer assistance center cannot tell me what they bolts should be torqued to other than very tight.
