4 Wheel Bolts problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2000

Left rear tire and rim came off while driving at 60 mph and pulling a small utility trailer, causing an accident. The trailer was severly damaged. The tire, which apparently left the vehicle when several lug bolts sheared off, was retrieved undamaged from a field near the road. The tire had not been removed from the vehicle since it was manufactured. Photos of the accident, sheared lug bolts, and resulting damage are available. This occurred while en route to a youth mission trip in south dakota with six people in the vehicle. There are many witnesses to this accident which clearly appears to have been the result of a manufacturing defect or engineering flaw similar to that encountered with 1997 and 1998 Expeditions.
