1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2025

While driving at approximately 70 mph on an interstate highway, the vehicle intermittently loses propulsion during acceleration. Engine power drops suddenly and the vehicle coasts for several seconds before power returns. This has occurred multiple times and creates an immediate safety hazard due to sudden loss of speed in active traffic lanes. The engine also produces a loud rattle at cold start. These symptoms began at approximately 70,000 miles and progressively worsened. A Ford dealership later diagnosed cam phaser failure at 88,938 miles. The loss of propulsion occurs without warning lights or driver alerts. Sudden reduction in engine power at highway speeds increases the risk of rear-end collision or loss of vehicle control. This condition presents a significant safety concern.

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2024

I was on the freeway going between 65-70mph when I felt a hard shift and lost all acceleration. The truck started to slow down and the wrench light came on. I was able to coast to the shoulder and turn my hazards on while the wrench light and warnings were going. I parked the truck and waited for my husband to help. The truck sat for approximately 20 minutes when it was turned back on. There were no lights on the dash and the wrench warning went away [xxx] husband was able to drive it home. I had my three kids in the truck and it was a terrifying experience. I took it to get scanned and it gave us a throttle body code. My vehicle supposedly isn't affected but this experience tells me that myself and my kids are in more danger than what is being claimed. 3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2024

I own 2019 Expedition had a powertrain malfunction happened to me around 48k miles a few years back on the i35 by pauls valley, ok and we all most got ran off the road. Scary. Was able to get home which was 30 minutes away on back road going about 35mph. Next morning no, light vehicle was fine. I did report this to my local Ford dealer, charles allen Ford in chickasha, ok. Was advised it was most likely due to condensation within a sensor or weather change. I trusted them on their assessment since it hasn’t happened again. This past Monday coming from sons football game which is 26 miles away it happens again, vehicle stalling and we almost got hit by a semi truck. I currently have 84k miles next morning was fine. No codes showing and vehicle ran as usual. I told jim allen who owns the charles allen Ford about this when I seen Tuesday at the local ymca. He advised probably weather change within a sensor. Told me to bring it for a check and they would take care of me. I didn’t as I don’t have the money to do that, especially after hearing other stories how the dealership kept the vehicle for weeks to months without finding an issue. So I took to my neighbor owns a diesel mechanic shop so we put on lift and check transmission fluid, clear and no flakes. Check lines although I do have a coolant / water hose leakage, which I order the part for. Ford needs to address this issue. I’m a [xxx] who depends on my vehicle to go to much needed va appointments in oklahoma city. Please help. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

4 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2024

Approximately one week ago, I was on the freeway when at 70 miles an hour warning light came in with brake system. Failure came up, and I lost all power to the vehicle and shut down and I tried restarting it on neutral. I was in traffic, which made it more difficult to go onto the side of the road went to I was in the center divider. There was no power of any kind to left side of vehicle windows, door locks, etc. The vehicle was towed to the dealership in san diego where they told me they couldn’t look at the vehicle for over a month, but their service tech and the repair person from the dealership was unable to attach a computer to the vehicle scanner was not showing anything wrong. I then had the vehicle towed again to my home where the dealer had told me it was a battery however I purchased a new battery from the dealer , and it made no difference approximately three days later I started the vehicle to roll up the window that was down and everything seem to work however, I put it in and proceeded forward. The same situation occurred once again with the statement system system failure, but this time parking assist downhill was also showing on the dashboard warning indicator. I have replaced the motor transmission and turbo on this back in January 2024. Vehicle is still under warranty however this seems to be a problem if the vehicle is cutting out with very minimal warning and shutting down on the freeway, this can cause an accident with myself and anybody near me , because the vehicle and the braking system shut down. I don’t know if this is a recall, but it’s something that should be looked at in a timely matter. Please contact me with further details. God bless.

5 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2024

Since we bought our car, it has had a rattle upon startup. This was originally a recall, which we got repaired, but this repair did not make the rattle go away. I then had a transmission problem and had to have the transmission overhauled due to it having violent, jerky, unpredictable shifting between gears. When I mentioned the rattle again while they were fixing the transmission, they said that it’s a known problem with Ford cam phasers around our model year. They informed me that the fix offered in the recall was an electronic fix, but the actual parts need to be replaced and the recall didn’t cover that. The parts replacement was almost $4000, and from my research, not replacing these parts can cause the engine to stop functioning properly over time. In the past two weeks, I have been getting safety notices from my car that there are timing issues that need to be serviced. Contacting Ford did not help as there is no active recall for this problem. From my research, there is an active lawsuit open against Ford for this cam phaser problem with my year model car. Overall, cam phasers play a critical role in enhancing the efficiency, performance, and reliability of 10-speed engines by enabling precise control over the engine’s valve timing. However, after just replacing my transmission we cannot afford to pay another $4000 for this error. Ford said they cannot help unless there is a recall on the vehicle.

6 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2024

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that there was a rattling sound coming from the vehicle while attempting to start the vehicle causing a delay while starting. The vehicle had been taken to a certified mechanic where it was diagnosed that the timing chain and cam phasers had failed and needed to be replaced. The mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to a TSB: 21b10-s3/NHTSA id number: 10201643 (electrical system). The dealer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in a recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in TSB: 21b10-s3/NHTSA id number: 10201643 (electrical system). The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.

7 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2024

When entering the vehicle and closing all doors, one pushes the start button. Once starting to drive or reverse, an error message appears "transmission not in park". The error message stays until the vehicle is put into motion. Then when coming to a stop, the error message reappears. It is understood the transmission is not in park because one is attempting to drive the vehicle. The vehicle drives fine, but the message appears repeatedly while in reverse and or drive. Many forums have suggested the rotary dial to engage the different drive modes is not speaking with the door latches. No other warnings appear and no doors are ajar.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2023

The car’s touchscreen and buttons on dash and steering wheel stop working sporadically. You can’t control the volume of the radio, hang up/answer calls, control the air conditioning, gps is wrong on the map, etc. Sometimes the screen is completely blank and/or unresponsive. It is very dangerous as well when the back up sensors and camera don’t work.

9 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2022

While driving down the road, my vehicle suddenly drops from a higher gear down to 2nd. When this happens, the rpms jump very high and the engine revs very high. While this is happening, I have no control and I can't use the gas pedal and am losing speed. The vehicle seems to be stalling. There are two messages that flash on the screen. "shift system fault" and "see manual". Neither are in the manual. I have taken it to Ford and after a day, they said nothing is wrong and collect almost $200. I took it in before my 75,000-mile transmission warranty was out. They said they have never heard of such a problem. I have now research it have found many people with the same on Expeditionforum. Com. It happens on a daily basis now and it's my only car and my learner car for my 15 year old. It will cause an accident. I did finally get it on videa and will make another attempt with Ford next week.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2022

The main interface screen for gps, radio, bluetooth (hands free phone operation), backup camera, and other vehicle settings, is malfunctioning and frequently non-responsive. This is tied to a faulty accessory protocol interface module (apim), also known as the sync 3 module. Research on the issue shows this is a common issue with Ford vehicles. The fixes reported in TSB 20-2255 05 August 2020 have been completed, the issues are persisting. The failure of this item creates safety issues with operating the vehicle. Similar issues have been reported in 11321932, 11300724, 11052887.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2022

My Expedition since I bought it completely turns off on me on roads and highways and throws up a wrench symbol and check engine light. Everytime I bring it in to the dealer they keep clearing codes and never fixing anything even tho I have extended warranty. They have had my car for 5-6 months maybe longer but the last time they had it for over a month said everything is fine for our roadtrip. Well the car turned off on me and died in the middle of the utah highway. . . Had to be towed. Was told it has 70 plus alerts.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2021

Vehicle was placed in park, shut off, and exited. Vehicle was parked on a hill. Several minutes later vehicle started rolling down a hill; narrowly missing a young girl. Vehicle came to rest on its own without sustaining damage. Vehicle should not have been able to move while in park and shut off.

13 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

Ford is aware of a design defect that causes the vct system to wear out within a short amount of time in brand new Expeditions. When the vct system wears out, the vehicle immediately transitions into "limp mode" , which causes the vehicle to immediately (unsafely) decelerate to a speed of 15mph (or less on hills), creating dangerous situations, particularly on highways and when towing. We purchased our Expedition in March 2019, brand new. We purchased the vehicle with the heavy duty tow package, which provides towing up to 9,300lbs. Within a few months, the vehicle began making a loud rattle at start up, lasting a few seconds. We diligently serviced the vehicle only at Ford dealerships, who routinely said the rattle was "fine" or "within spec. " on 9/1/2020, while towing our airstream trailer (~7,000 lbs) on interstate highway 86 through windsor, NY, the vehicle threw on the "wrench light" and rapidly decelerated from 55mph to 10mph. We were at the bottom of a long incline, in moderately heavy traffic (65mph). There was an insufficient shoulder to stop with our trailer, so we very slowly crept for miles to the nearest exit. The closest Ford dealerships refused to look at it. It was eventually towed to oneonta Ford. Despite knowing of TSB 20-2315 (and its predecessors), Ford claimed that the vehicle was "fine" and likely just suffered a bad oil change. After spending 12 days with our vehicle, they returned it, performing only an oil change. The rattle remained and Ford claimed there was nothing they could do. On 10/9/2020, the very next time we attempted to tow, on county highway 2, the vehicle again, abruptly went from 55 to10mph on a long, slow incline in moderate traffic. We turned around (with the trailer) on a 2 lane road. The vehicle was towed back to Ford, who reluctantly (after weeks) replaced the vct system per TSB 20-2315.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2019

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the electrical system became inoperable. The contact stated that the center console had no power. The contact stated that the radio and the charging station had no electrical power. The engine on due to low power warning light illuminated and went off. In addition, the rear driver's side door and the passenger's front and rear door latches were inoperable. The latches failed to unlock from the inside. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times however, the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 3,500.
