50 problems related to vehicle speed control have been reported for the 1997 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Each time I start the vehicle and put my foot on the gas pedal, it sticks. Then it is necessary to step on it even harder. It eventually catches and then I surge forward or backward (depending on whether I am in drive or reverse). The dealership says that I must wait until my vehicle identification number comes up to get it fixed. In the meantime, I just have to live with it. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? my vehicle is still under warranty.
While stopping at a stop sign or a light, the vehicle revved up to 6000rpm, which could cause the vehicle to accelerate if the vehicle brakes weren't activated. Dealer repaced the sensor. Problem still exists. Cause unknown. Dealer cannot determine problem.
Car surges out of control regardless of the gear and without warning.
Received recall notice for 97v-074 000 and the dealer had truck for 3 weeks and they still do not have parts for this truck.
Recall # 97v074000, dealership refuses to honor recall because manufacturer will not cover the cost. Dealer stated that recall needs to be performed in the state of wisconsin.
While driving on the freeway consumer attempted to apply brakes and the engine began to accelerate, not allowing consumer to slow down. Consumer tried to avoid an automobile in front of him , ran up on the curb and hit rear end of automobile in front of him.
When traveling in cold weather conditions about 30 mph and upon making a gradual stop the vehicle will continue to accelerate, making it very difficult to stop the vehicle, causing the consumer to go through an intersection. Consumer has contacted the dealer. Please provide further details.
Experiencing a noice and vibration at idle stage, when acelerating lose of power, smoke from engine do not know the source.

Consumer received recall notification (00v422000), consumer purchased vehicle from a private owner which was a salvage title and manufacturer is refusing to honor recall as well as install tether kit free of charge as they previously stated.

Idle air control valve has failed twice , only lasted about 20,000 miles. This caused vehicle to stall when applying accelerator pedal.
Recall notice sent to consumer (97v074/98r03), however dealership refuses repair due to state in which consumer lives does not match description on recall. Mjs.
Coming to stop, applying foot on brakes, vehicle will lunge foward, engine will rev up. Consumer must reapply the brakes in order to stop vehicle. Dealership unable to correct problem.
