general problems of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Three problems related to exterior lighting have been reported for the 1998 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 1998 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitated to start and that there was smoke coming from the vehicle on numerous occasions. In addition, the contact stated that the overhead lights in the vehicle do not work, and that the battery has a shortage. The contact stated that the service engine light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage 200,000. Ad.

2 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2003

Mulifunction switch on 1998 Ford Explorer eddie bower 2wd smoking and required replacement. Mfs began smoking after starting the vehicle, potentially causing a fire hazard. No fires reported after numerous vehicle starts, however, smoke becoming more prevelant after each vehicle start. Vehicle was driveable. Mfs was replaced.

3 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2000

While visiting the NHTSA web site I found a recall on Ford exp. Nhtsa campaign id number: 97v215000 my Explorer does not fit the recall but the same thing happens, no chime and also no interior light. I always thought I was doing something wrong. Could the problem be more wide spread than NHTSA or Ford think. Thanks for the opportunity to report.
