Two problems related to parking brake linkage and cable have been reported for the 1998 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The left rear parking brake cable (part number fmc f87z 2a635 gb) was found to be rubbing against the tire. The rubber shielding on the cable had been worn down to expose the metal inside the cable. The side of the tire facing the cable was being worn down by the metal in the cable. It appeared that the cable might cause a tire failure while driving the vehicle.
While tires were being changed, owner noticed spring that holds up parking brake cable has rubbed through the installation. Now the spring is actually rubbing through the cable. Evenually, the cable will snap and puncture rear driver's side tire. Owner is able to see where parking cable is rubbing on the new tire. Problem has not been corrected.
