48 problems related to tire blowout have been reported for the 1998 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
We had two incidents of tire blow outs in 4 months the last one occurring on oct 12, 2008. The cause of both blow outs was the tire stem but we did not hear about the recall until I heard it on the news today. We have since bought new tires afraid that it would happen again but what can we do now? I feel like we should be compensated but how? the Ford dealer we bought the tires from is out of business so we could not go there when we realized that it was a tire stem problem and without knowing there was a recall we had no option but to go somewhere else which was american tire. We went to american tire both times it happened for them to fix the tires and they did not mention a recall either. The tires were not old enough to be replaced but for our own safety we did that. I guess I know there is nothing you can do but just wanted to get some advise of what to do, if anything. Thanks, patty p. S. No crash, no deaths, thank goodness.

The right rear tire experienced a blowout, which caused the vehicle to roll over. (tire by michelin) there was a cut found in the inside of the sidewall. The vehicle pulled to the left, veered harshly to the right, and the right rear tire had shredded, which was a firestone tire. (the front tires were moved to the rear and replaced the front tires with the spare a new tire. In October 2000, all of the tires were replaced with michelin tires).

We had a tire blow out. With all the news about the firestone, I am concerned that this is related. The fact that there was no injury or accident is very lucky. We were told our tires werent recalled yet because they are 16 inch. I am very concerned, because we have 3 other tires that I do not trust. We travel on a highway and this could have been serious. Our dealership, although friendly, just states that its not part of the recall. Pay for the tire. I am very disappointed. ( dot number: vncu ipx tire size: pz55/70r16 ).

I was driving our Explorer ltd. Near palm springs, CA at about 60 mph when I heard and felt a huge bang sound. I was able to get car under control and bring it to a stop in a median. We looked outside and saw that all the tread on the left rear tire had blown off. The force of the tire tread breaking off broke off the tire fender on that tire, bent the metal body of the car at the wheel well and somehow flew up and damaged my bumper. No one was injured. The rest of the tire stayed inflated long enough for us to exit the roadway and get to a safe place. ( dot number: vdhl1py018 tire size: 13575r15 ).
On Saturday night July 8, 2000 my 18 year old daughter was returning home from a friends house on interstate 65. She had traveled approximately 5 miles when the left rear tire blew out. She was lucky she was able to control the vehicle to the side of the interstate. Upon my arrival it looked as if the tire had blew out on the inside and the outside. The tire was barely still on the rim. I took the tire to a local firestone dealer on July 10, 2000 for replacement. The dealer could not pin point a reason for the failure and replaced the tire at a pro-rated price of $40. 66. I noticed the replacement tire was manufactured in canada and the original tires (including the failure) were manufactured in the USA. Now that there is a recall on firestone wilderness at tires, I wanted to make sure I recorded my experience and complaint. ( dot number: w2co1px258 tire size: 9255/70r16 ).
The front left tire exploded while traveling at about 65 - 70 mph. Just prior to the blow-out I had noticed a slight pull to the left. When the tire blew I gradually depressed the brakes to slow the vehicle. The brakes were completely ineffective in slowing the vehicle. Not 60% ineffective, totally ineffective. It was not after I switched off the ignition, about 3 seconds after the blow-out, that the brakes resumed normal effectivness. I reported this to the dealer. They did a check of the brakes and said everything checked out ok. I was concerned that the anti-lock breaking system had somehow locked out all brakes when the left front blew out. ( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 ).

On 6/18/2000 our 1998 Ford Explorer with firestone blow-out or a tread problewilderness at tires went out of control after making a sharp steering maneuver to avoid another car. Our vehicle subsequently rolled over (we were told) six times. We do not believe there was a tire m, but what we suspect happened is debeading of the tires. We have read your 130 page report from July 1999 entitled "an experimental examination of selected maneuvers that may induce on-road untripped, light vehicle rollovers - phase ii of NHTSA's 1997-1998 vehicle rollover research program". We are concerned that with the amount of emphasis currently being placed on the blow-out/tread problem, that this other problem of tire debeading is being ignored. We have pictures of our vehicle from after the accident that show the tires separated from the rims (debeaded). We would be eager to discuss our rollover accident further in an attempt to help prevent further horrible accidents of this nature. If you have any further information that will help us understand the nature of our accident , we would be very appreciative. We are not sure at this point if we have enough information to proceed legally against either the vehicle or tire manufacturer. ( dot number: tire size: 15in ).
We were driving on hwy. 50 east in sacramento, CA when we heard a noise, then the car started vibrating and weaving. We pulled over on the side of the road and discovered that the tire had blown. Took the car to a firestone dealership and had the tire changed to the same exact tire. We were not given any information concerning the history of these tires. ( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 ).

I had been driving for about 12 hours on a trip starting in florida on my way to michigan. In kentucky I ran over a 2x4 peice of wood about 6" long. The front tire went over ok, but the rear tire blow immediately. There was no tread separation just a big hole toward one side of the tread (not in the sidewall).
