One problem related to transmission noise has been reported for the 1998 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving at low speeds accelerator would become hard. Transmission would jump from neutral into drive. Then a loud noise, like a bang, would be heard. Transmission would reengage itself into drive. The problem is intermittent. Took to dealer to have transmission overhauled.
