1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2023

Transmission.

2 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2020

I too had the same problem as I was coming to a four way intersection. As I was driving all of a sudden a wrench tool came up and I could not accelerate so I had to pull off in a parking lot before I got to the intersection. I did not want my vehicle to stall and I turned the vehicle off and put it into neutral and let it sit there. I then took it out of neutral and started it back up. I could feel the jerking and felt like I got rear ended in the back. My head jerked forward as I was driving while it kept jerking.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2018

Engine shut down while driving approximately 10- 15 miles without notice.

4 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2018

2006 Ford Explorer, eddie bauer edition. The electronic throttle body (etb) fails, becomes defective, and has been replaced five times in less than two years. Without warning, the vehicle will display poor performance, erratic rpm's, loose power, and even stall. All indications point to the etb; codes and mechanic experience suggest replacing etb, only to have save issue arise again in two to three months, if not weeks, or even days, after replacement. Often, but not always, the "wrench" icon (limp home) turns on, and, often, however, not always, the check engine light. A restart of vehicle, the "wrench" icon turns off, and vehicle will drive, however, continues to perform poorly. The above occurs in all kinds of weather, and times of day, or year, without warning, no matter the diving conditions. The problems are inconsistent and irregular. The symptoms may occur on first start in driveway, on busy street, or idling in school pick-up line. When the etb is replaced, the vehicle drives as manufacture intended, demonstrating the issue is with the etb, as numerous mechanics have diagnosed, from the Ford dealership to many name-brand and local auto repair shops. The replaced-electronic throttle bodies perform well for inconsistent time periods no matter of the manufacturer. Oem etb do not seem to last any longer than after-market etb's.

5 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2018

Shift stuck in park and keys stuck in ignition.

6 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2018

After placing the vehicle in park, after removing foot from brake, the car rolls forward. This happens each time it's being parked, more noticeable over the last 6 months. Also frequently misfires when starting; diagnostics usually produce 8 - 13 codes, none of which produce a complete fix.

7 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2017

Power train warning light comes on as driving down the highway at 75 mph. Car acted as if it would stop and as if transmission was slipping. We slowed car down, and moved it at a rate of 30 mph, but then car began acting normally. We stopped as soon as possible and turned car off and turned back on. It started normally. This is not the first time it happened, but this is the worse incident.

8 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2017

Rear window hinge fractured, window fell. Vehicle was stationary.

9 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2017

While driving on the highway a wrench light turned on on my dash. I then realized the gas pedal was not reving as usual I then pulled over and restarted the vehicle and it continued to work just fine or so I thought until it happened a day later. It happens every so often since then, but it is dangerous especially with my children are in the vehicle.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2016

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2016

The vehicle's transmission propels forward at low speeds while braking. Even though the brake is applied the vehicles to propels forward and can cause an accident or worse. When trying get to stop at a stop sign or red light you have to try and stop well ahead then you normally would to try and get it to propel before reaching out the pedestrian walk area. My fear trying ge to stop coming off a highway off ramp with a pedestrian crossing or trying to stop abruptly I. A residential area with a child running across the street after a ball.

12 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2016

We recently bought our truck in March 2016 and since about April of 2016 the truck continuously shuts off, in traffic, on the highway, on residential roads. . Pretty much any and every where, it happens while driving and while idling. All power is lost including power steering. Sometimes it will shut off 2/3 times in a 5-10 minute span will driving. It has cut off on me twice while driving through intersections while I had my children in the car with me almost resulting in accidents both times. Sometimes while driving it loses power then suddenly regains power back and will continue to drive. This is an all round dangerous and potentially deadly situation! after doing some research it seems as if this is a very common problem with these vehicles. I've contacted Ford myself and so far they haven't issued a recall and are aware of this situation. Please help!!.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2016

Check engine lite and orange wrench lite which shuts car down no excelration pedal power steering gone and no brake control on freeway coming home. Trans. Will not shift and jumps when wrench lite is on very dangerous this has been going on since April took back to dealer sent to mechanic replaced 2 parts on excelleration module. Still not right.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2016

I have replaced the radiator 2 times and getting ready to replace for the 3rd time. This is my 1st Ford vehicle and if this continues it will be my last. I have found this is a common problem with the 2006 Ford Explorer and something needs to be done about it. A recall. Ford stand by your vehicle. It leaks transmission fluid at the radiator and the only way to fix is replace the radiator. All 3 times it leaks at the same place. My mechanic says there is no stabilization for this hose so in a short time it breaks and starts the leak. Fix your problem Ford.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2015

Vehicle went to shop to fix abs light. The following morning before shop opened up, the vehicle caught on fire (while stationary and not running) burning completely. The fire caused considerable damage to the shop and another vehicle that was in the adjacent bay. Fire department determined fire started on its own and cited similar incidents for Ford Explorers.

16 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2015

Vehicle is hard to engage in gear. When putting in reverse, it jolts really hard like I was rear ended. Takes a while to engage into drive.

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2015

Trucks doesn't engage in gear sometimes, I have problems backing up doesn't engage properly. I almost got in accident with my two babies where in thee vehicle.

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

It had a hard lunge anytime I was at a stop light (it would act like it was trying to go when I was stopped so I would put it in park, wait for the green light and put it back in drive so I didn't risk the chance of rear ending someone), it seemed if I pushed the gas pedal too hard, it would act like it couldn't shift into the next gear correctly, it makes all kinds of loud banging noises and the tires would lose traction. We replaced the transmission value body and the transmission control module. We got the truck back and it is still having the same issues. We spoke with Ford who told us there was no way there was a 6-speed automatic BMW transmission in our Ford truck - we were right - we gave Ford the VIN for the truck and they came back and said "we are sorry, you are right it is a 6-speed auto transmission" (so basically Ford had no idea what transmission they put in the truck) come to find out it is a Ford 6r transmission which was only used in 2005 and 2006 Ford Explorer and it's obviously a piece of crap! no one knows how to fix my truck! the truck has been to two transmission shops, a shop that has expertise in computer problems and another car shop. No one has answers for me. I can not get a rental car because my insurance will not cover rental unless I've been in a wreck. And now the transmission shop is talking about sending the truck to a Ford dealership and it could take a few months to diagnose and repair. Ain't nobody got time to be out of a ride for a few months! Ford needs to recall their 2006 6r transmissions. . . They know there is something wrong with them. There are hundreds of complaints already out there and Ford is not listening to it's customers.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2014

This happened to our 2006 Ford Explorer (eddie bauer edition, v8 4wd). The rear liftgate glass exploded into a million tiny pieces with no evidence of external trauma. The car was parked in the driveway at the time and the temperature was above freezing (low 40s) and it was not in the sun. Approximately half the glass was scattered across the driveway - 10+ feet away. The rest of the glass was in the back of the SUV. Fortunately no one was around when this happened - and we were not driving the car at the time. This could have resulted in serious injury to a bystander - or an accident as I can only imagine how much that would alarm the driver. I will be cleaning glass bits from the driveway and back of the SUV for a long time to come! at least it is not too warm out so no is tempted to walk barefoot on the drive.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2014

While shifting into gear, Explorer slams and makes a bang sound. Truck lunges or jerks and while driving truck jerks into gears when changing.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

I bought my first Ford Explorer almost 8 years ago. I had absolutely no problems with this vehicle and felt very safe driving my newborn son. I had a second son and decided to buy a new Ford Explorer because it was such a dependable car. Now I am regretting that decision. I bought a 2006 Ford exploer at round 60,000 miles. It now has 70,000 and I have already had to get another transmission and it still has not fixed the problem. It jolts, lunges, and sometimes the transmission doesn't engage. I feel extremely unsafe trying to pull out at an intersection because the car starts to jolt and I have to slam on the gas in order for the car to go. It is horrible and I feel very unsafe driving; especially with my children in the car. Even if I am driving on the interstate I have to put the car into overdrive to stop the majority of the jolting, and that does not even guarantee it will stop. My husband is in the military and gone a great deal. He should not have to worry about the safety of his children or wife when he is deployed overseas or when he is training away from home. He is currently away from home for training, getting ready for deployment. He is calling every chance he gets to make sure the car has not broken down or we have not been in and accident due to this very horrible vehicle. If I had enough money I would buy another vehicle and tell everyone not to ever buy a Ford again. I think I am more upset with the fact that my husband is possible being sent overseas in October, and he cannot even go to war with the knowledge his family is safe. I really wish someone would understand that this is a huge problem and major safety problem. Please help all of the families with this defect.

22 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2013

Both of these things have been happening over the last 2-3 years but I can not remember exact dates. First my car has been running hot continuously over this period of time which causes me to have to put coolant in at least once every month. I took it to the dealership and they told me this was common with the Explorers but there has not been a recall so I would have to pay out of pocket. They first told me it was the line to the radiator that was leaking so I had it replaced, then next time it was the thermostat and housing that they said was the problem. So I had this replaced. Now today 9/19/2013 I had to replace the radiator. It doesn't matter what I seem to fix this problem continues to occur. Secondly my car jerks into gear when I try to put in gear. They are telling me now I need a transmission but I see this is a recurring problems with many Explorers owners and it doesn't fix the problem either. I don't know what else to do because my car is jerking which causes me to almost hit people or doesn't go into gear fast enough which causes them to almost hit me. Please help!!! these problems first started to occur around 40000 miles. My problem is radiator and transmission.

23 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2013

I recently purchased a used 2006 Ford Explorer-eddie bauer edition around June 2013. The approximate mileage at time of purchase was 76700. It has only been 2 months since my purchase and I am having problems with the transmission. When in park and shifting into reverse, the car stalls and then after a 5-10 second delay the car jerks very hard backwards. Then when braking immediately after moving backwards in order to shift into 1st gear, the truck just stalls as if its in neutral and then jerks forward violently into 1st gear. This is a very dangerous problem that could lead to a serious accident. Also when driving at a speed of 50 miles per hour or more and slowing down because of interstate traffic, the transmission acts as if it wants to stall even though the engine is revved up. Ford needs to recall this vehicle and fix this systemic problem.

24 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2013

From July 5th to present my 2006 Ford Explorer truck was toed to the dealership 3 times. Each time it was for the same problem overheating. This has been a constant problem with this car since it was purchased in December 2005. The radiator has been replace twice, the transmission once, the throttle , etc. I have been told that now after the radiator was a replaced and the throttle, etc. At a cost of $2300. 00. The car now needs a new engine and /or gaskets that need replacing. I cannot understand why a car with normal mileage, which was only involved in one minor fender bender. Can need so much major work.

25 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2013

When putting the vehicle in reverse its a hesitation then a loud noise, and a violent jerking like you have been hit from the rear, also at 40 miles and hour it jerks.

26 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2013

Car began stalling while driving. All power is lost. Throttle box cleaned in June 2013. Began to stall again within weeks very randomly with no warning. Now stalling at higher speeds. April of 2014 throttle box cleaned again and radiator replaced. Stalled 2 days later. Very dangerous as now requires gas pedal and braking to limp the car to safety. This car only has 42,000 miles on it and is a one owner car, so I know that all maintenence has been done on schedule at the dealership where it was purchased.

27 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2013

Transmission disengaged at red light. It started going backwards instead of forward. Had to put into park and then back into drive to get it to drive. Still going on. Now when actually on the road it is getting out of gear when vehicle is at driving speed. Engine revs up to 5000rpms, then down to 1000rpm. Vehicle lunging. Will get hurt I'm sure.

28 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2013

When attempting to add gasoline to the tank, gas shoots out of the tank at the nozzle area as if the tank is full. Gas must be added at an extremely slow rate in order to fill the tank. Even when adding gas to the tank at the extremely slow rate the pump will continue to kick off every few seconds.

29 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

Same as a bunch of complaints about transmission lunges hard jolt when shifting, wrench light comes on and off regarding the 2006 Ford Explorer, now they are telling me that I need to get a new transmission that will be $3500. 00 aprox. I have done some research and there are a lot of complaints on this issue. Please do something!! I can't afoord this an have to borrow family money to get back on the road.

30 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2012

This vehicle has been jerking when I am going slow to the point as if someone hit me in the rear end of the vehicle. It is a very strong jerking sensation enough to frighten any reasonable individual. It also has been trying to accelerate when my foot was on the brake pedal and not in cruise control while going well below the minimum speed necessary to use the cruise control. The auto acceleration was while at 10 miles per hour or less and my foot was on the brake. This has become more and more frequent and I am worried it could be the computer, the transmission, the engine, or a control system not functioning properly. This has happened on multiple occasions with passengers in the vehicle. My parents were frightened when it happened. I am worried the thing may accelerate on its own and hurt another vehicle(s) or its passengers. There hasn't be a fire or crash yet but it is my fear that will happen unless this safety issue is meaningfully addressed. I already had certified auto repair of rockville MD look at the vehicle and they told me they couldn't find anything wrong following a computer diagnostic. The jerking and auto acceleration are becoming more and more frequent and I am reporting this because I am concerned about the safety of my vehicle and others on the road. Also, there are heavy virbations occuring during the idling process and I am not a mechanic but this may have something to do with the safety concerns on the vehicle.

31 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

Range shifter needs to be replaced, truck is jerking with acceleration and changing going between 1st to 5th gear jolting the vehicle. Very big safety issue as I have almost been rear-ended multiple times. Ford says no recall on transmission issues. Mine is a 6r60 transmission in the 2006 eddie bauer Explorer which has the range shifter located inside transmission. Will cost $2300 to fix!.

32 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2012

It would not shift in reverse till I turned it off and restart it took the reverse. After the incident the Explorer keep on giving me problems every time I'll shift it into reverse. I have to actually punch the gas so it could get the reverse gear. It has been many times that I had to quickly step on the brakes to avoid hitting on coming traffic as well as parked cars, after having to punch on the gas so I could go in reverse. I have been told that it could be the transmission.

33 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

The truck jolts when shifting gears to reverse and drive, I feels like a car ran into me from the back. It has caused me to bump into another car in front of me when I was sitting in traffic, as I accelerate the gas pedal it either stalls or jolts very hard, thank god it there was no damage to the other car nor mine. Ever since this happened, it has been big problem when driving on the road, and now the truck doesn't pick up speed very quickly ever since this happened, when I get to 20 mph it stalls or jolts after 3-5 seconds. My shift stick is all messed up now, when I put it in reverse, it looks like its on neutral and park looks like its on 3rd gear. Service mechanics have almost crashed my car because of this issue, and Ford has said they can't guarantee a proper repair!! then why sell it if you can't repair it properly so I wont have problems in the future. This vehicle needs to be recalled for safety issues.

34 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2011

While driving 2006 Ford Explorer shuts down several time at different occasion sometimes a little wrench appears and gas pedal becomes unresponsive and cruise control can not be engage and vehicle idle very rough when come to a stop. Vehicle has loss acceleration while running on 6 lanes highway and require to be pull along the side to turn off and restart again, when vehicle shuts down it does not always restart right away. When I bring it for diagnostic Ford dealers are unable to do anything because the symptoms can not be duplicated and no fault are store. It happen again Sunday August 21 2011 while I was driven from NJ to NY on I-80 and this time check engine light came on and took it to auto-zone and they read codes p2104 and p2111. By the time I went to the dealer and turn off the vehicle check engine light was gone the could not do anything.

35 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2011

Vehicle bangs into gear from 1st to 2nd, and constantly slides in and out of gear while the engine is reeving at 2500 rpm. Also hesitates when shifting into reverse. Shop advice water getting into wire harness they fix by drying it and putting grease but issue persists (no code).
