I took my 2016 Ford Explorer XLT on Dec 29th 2020 to get a oil change etc. They had the vehicle all day even though I took it in at 7am. I pick it up a 4:45 pm then drive it home because I work from home I did not drive it again until Saturday Jan 9th 2021, while driving it that morning I realized that the steering wheel was hard to steer and the truck would make noises when I turn the steering in either direction. I took it in to the dealership that morning and asked the service consultant to take a look at it. He told me while my father was on the phone that he believes it the rack and pinion and he can't take it because they are busy and it's okay for me to drive it. I also told him at that time I am supposed to drive out of town and I won't be back for awhile so if there is a problem I rather leave it so it can be fixed. I have damaged on my c5 vertebrae so I can feel the hardness in the steering. He assured or dismissed me but he said it's fine. A few hours later the steering wheel seized up and the dashboard started making noise and the warning lights and messages started to displaying. It almost killed both my mother and I on the highway. If you know nyc highway you know there is no shoulders. When I pulled of the road the steering wheel locked up and I could not move it. I had to pay for the truck to be towed and a uber for myself back to the dealership and then paid for me to get home. Now they are telling me that I have to pay $2719. 81 for the rack and pinion repair and the also pay for the strut bearing to be repaired which they haven't given me the price for it because "it was too much to give me both price at once. " OH by the way, this is the same service consultant that told me it was fine for me to drive and almost killed 2 generation of my family at the same time. I am pissed!! now I see other customers complaining about the same issue on there SUV!!.
When I go to turn, it continues to pop. The tie rods have been replaced along with rack and pinion but you could be stopped and applying brake and turn wheel and it pops.
One morning, I began to smell a sulfur or gas-like smell inside the car. I thought nothing of it but it persisted from 5:00 a. M. -9:00 a. M. My 7 year old son even smelled it when entering the car. After dropping him off at school I drove to dealership to get it inspected. During that drive, with the windows cracked, I began to feel a dull headache, dizziness and muscle weakness. Once I dropped my car off for inspection and was out of the car I didn't feel any better and my headache and weakness got worse. My wife took me to the er out of precaution and after bloodwork was taken, I was confirmed to have had carbon monoxide poisoning. I am a non-smoker and my cohb levels were twice that of a non-smoker : 3. 8% it was raining out so I could not unrolli windows as much as I wanted to. I was not driving with the a/c on, was not sitting idle. Minimum speed was 5-10 mph and max speed was 70 mph Ford identified the smell as a failing ptu but claimed there was no CO present after driving the vehicle with a CO sensor inside the cab. I have owned the vehicle for 32 months with no issue but I cannot ignore that I did in fact have carbon monoxide exposure immediately following the existence of the strong sulfur smell showing up. I am not convinced carbon monoxide getting inside the vehicle will not happen again.
Strong exhaust and very high levels of CO entering cabin at normal acceleration, very bad at hard acceleration I have multiple pictures of my CO sensor I had in the vehicle for some time now with lethal CO levels. I believe the exhaust manifolds have big enough cracks to flood in CO into the cabin through openings. Mine has had the 'dealer itsb' to resolve, no change and it registered higher after. Replace this manifold and seal this truck or buy it back from me Ford. If putting my family's life in danger daily doesn't scare you, the pictures and proof I have are enough for another lawsuit against you for this! I need to be contacted by a Ford rep (not a dealership) to resolve or my lawyers will follow up with you. -john cook dallas, GA 2016 Explorer limited 3. 5 na.
Every time I drive the Explorer I get terrible headaches. My 11 year old daughter complains of the same thing. Have to keep windows cracked to let bad smell out of the cabin. When walking near car you can smell it and fills garage with terrible smell.
I already submitted one complaint today about the cabin filling with exhaust fumes while accelerating but then I was reading other issues people were having and wanted to ensure you were aware of mine as well. I had to have the cooling fans replaced because they would come to a screeching halt when you would shut the motor off. I had to have the inside of the power lift gate repainted where the motor and shock are located because the paint was cracking. The center caps on the wheels are falling in so those are going to be replaced. It is now rusting on the back of my car by the rear tail light. The hood vibrates really bad when going over 65 mph. I haven't taken it in for that yet because I can't get it to do it all of the time. It has to be windy for it to happen to me. The front door black trim pieces on the outside started to bubble so those had to be replaced. The only safety concern is the hood vibrating. The rest are just fyi's as they seem to be common problems. I bought this car brand new in November 2015 and it has had problems since the 1st month.
Went to the dealer complained about front end noise also fumes in cabin they fixed the steering rack I asked them about the fumes they told me to use premium gas. This was in July 2017 with 11500 miles now in sept still 'll ing with fumes and steering noise coming back. Dealer is koppel the odor came up the same month I bought it with 900 miles on it like all of us I thought we had to break it in.
