-the contact stated that while driving 50 mph in the 2002 Ford Explorer he heard a loud noise coming from the back of the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to dealer for a wheel bearing repair when the odometer reached 10,300 miles, and was informed that both the rear spring and the emergency brake cable were fractured. The contact stated that he tried to get a resolution for repairs on the vehicle because it was still under warranty, but the dealership refused to repair the vehicle unless the contact paid for the repairs. The contact purchased the vehicle from wentworth motors , and they told the contact that he had to take the vehicle to a Ford dealership for the repairs. The current mileage was 10,600. The left rear parking brake cable (part number fmc f87z 2a635 gb) was found to be rubbing against the tire. The rubber shielding on the cable had been worn down to expose the metal inside the cable. The side of the tire facing the cable was being worn down by the metal in the cable. It appeared that the cable might cause a tire failure while driving the vehicle.

6 Parking Brake Linkage And Cable problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Consumer states the routing of the parking brake cable on this particular model of Explorer's is no more than 1/16 of an inch from the tire and in some cases the cable rubs against the tire and causes a blowout. Consumer feels this problem develops when the left brake cable is installed, the cable has to loop over very close to the tire, if the cable sags a little, it will touch the tire, when it touches the tire, the downward notation at the point of contact it will pull the cable further downward increasing the contact, consumer also states tire pressure of 26 psi or less would contribute to the problem.

While tires were being changed, owner noticed spring that holds up parking brake cable has rubbed through the installation. Now the spring is actually rubbing through the cable. Evenually, the cable will snap and puncture rear driver's side tire. Owner is able to see where parking cable is rubbing on the new tire. Problem has not been corrected.
