2001 Ford Explorer Sport - overall good condition - complaint involves failure of both door power locks/handle mechanisms. Drivers door totally failed and repairs made at auto shop, but mechanism quickly failed again. Expensive repair. - passenger door lock also malfunctioning mildly but still operable for the time being. Appears ready to fail however since this was same prior symptom of the opposite door. No information located on recall from Ford previously for this problem.

In trying to determine where a new rattle was coming I heard on the way home, I noticed the rear gate glass hinge had broken or became dislodged. When trying to secure it to take it to the dealership for repair, the glass slipped and cut deep gashes into the body. I had just returned home and had it fallen off on the highway it good have caused an accident. The dealership attributed it to wear and tear even though I had previously only opened the glass lift gate twice during the life of the car. I was charged a fee just to replace the hinge. I did not get he body work repaired. There were recalls for this problem on other explorer's made during the same period mine was made, but I was told my VIN was not involved in the recall. (Ford recall no. 04s20 and a campaign number 04v442000 and safety report #10266375 and #10266836).

I own a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport and rear glass hinge fractured/broke and caused glass to fall on one side and hurt daughters wrist. Took to local Ford dealership and they said no recall and it would cost $300-$400 to fix and then hydraulics probably would not work and glass could break increasing the cost to $700 - $800 or more. I searched and found numerous complaints on web. I contacted Ford by phone and was told no recall so to have fixed and keep receipt in case there was a recall. They said nothing they could do because no recall. No concern for safety was shown.
I own a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport. As I drove the vehicle into a parking lot I heard a clanking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. After I parked the vehicle, I looked at the lift gate and saw no damage. I opened the back deck of the vehicle. When I closed it, the rear window fell out. The hinges on the rear glass separated from the vehicle causing the rear gas to fall out. I had my vehicle towed to the nearest Ford dealer, fearing that driving the vehicle would cause the rear glass to break. The dealer told me the cost of repair would be $407. 00. Also informed me that an earlier recall had been done on the same year regular Ford explorer (02-03) for exactly the same issue but they did not recall the Explorer Sport, even thought the same parts were used on both vehicles.
I have had my driver's seat recliner mechanism repaired before, but the recliner driver's seat has broken again. Now the recliner driver's seat reclines totally, until it touches the back seat cushion. The dealership told me the part to repair the seat is no longer manufactured. I was told I could go to a salvage yard to look for the part. On researching the problem on the internet I came upon the recall notice for the exact problem I have had with this vehicle.

2001 Ford Explorer Sport: door suddenly stopped unlocking with the key. I have since discovered hundreds of other explorer owners with the same story. I feel this is a safety issue because I transport my 10 month old daughter in this car, and I can't afford to be locked out without warning during the winter.
The locks and door latch on my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport obviously do not work! the first problem is that while I'm driving, the driver's side door will fly open if I hit a bump, drive over railroad tracks or turn too hard. My door has opened on the interstate, in on-coming traffic, and has almost hit other cars or objects. Any time I close the passenger or rear doors, the driver door will pop open. The second problem is that the locks don't keep the doors secured. My door will still fly open even if the lock is down. This past Monday, I left my car locked (or atleast it appeared to be locked) in front of my house and within 30 minutes someone had broken in and stolen everything. He apparently just lifted the door handle because there was no sign of forced entry. He stole my cd player, checkbooks, insurance & registration cards, cash, and everything else he could carry. The locks and doors on my car have been an incredible inconvenience and safety problem for me for almost 3 years. The estimates that have been offered are too expensive for me to afford as I am a recent college graduate.
I have a Ford Explorer Sport 2 dr. . . I have noticed that it likes to slide alot esp. Around corners. I actually went around a corner about not even 10 miles per hour and lost control luckily cars on other side stopped ahead when they saw this. I was not hurt but almost hit a tree and telephone pole. . Also my hinges broke on rear window left side and they said mine was not covered under recall!!! out of pocket expense around 140. 00.
There were no events leading up to this failure I was driving to go see a movie. The door lock on the drivers side stopped working (even with a key it will not unlock). No parts have been replaced on this door except for the door itself over 7 years ago.
1998 Ford explorer driver side door lock won't open. It won't open if you use the key, remote, or manually try to pull up on it while inside. However, the other doors and tailgate unlock ok. I am forced to enter the car on the passenger side and climb over a console in the middle to get into driver seat. I believe this is a serious safety issue as there is no way to get in or out of the car on the driver side. I am 76 years old and this is extremely difficult to get in over the console on passenger side. There are numerous complaints on internet for this exact problem.
The contact owns a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport. The driver side door locks malfunctioned. As a result, the contact cannot open the driver side door. The fuse relay of the vehicle is located in the driver side door, which prevents the contact from changing any of the fuses. Prior to the failure, he experienced issues with manually unlocking the doors with the vehicle key. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 70,300.
In 2007, my 1998 Ford explorer driver door lock stopped working. It really didn't bother me all that much until one day by accident the door locked and would not come open. I had to push with all my force and pull up on the interior door handle at the same time. Finally it came open but the door handle broke. Now it was to the point of disgust. Didn't have the money to fix it so we waited until we did. In 2008, I took my explorer to the local dealership. I was quoted $197 for everything, installation, parts, and labor. But when I came to pay the bill I was informed it was going to be about $100 if not more when completed. So my aunts boyfriend, who does auto body work, fixed it. It was working fine, we still had to jiggle to lock from the outside to get the locks to unlock. And then about a week ago, I was getting out and the door handle broke again. This time the handle is stuck. I now have to roll down the window and open the door from the outside or crawl across the passenger side. Which we have had to do that in the past and it is embarrassing. So now I've e-mailed Ford about my complaint and that is where I was informed you done the recalls. . Read more...
The locks on my doors keep locking by themselves and the driver side door wont unlock unless you beat it to death the back latch does not open at all it is locked and won't unlock.
The driver's side door will not unlock by key, remote or the inside handle. When the consumer contacted the dealer and manufacturer, they told her that it was not on recall and that she had to take care of the issue herself. The consumer felt that this was a safety issue because if there was an emergency one would not be able to exit the vehicle quickly. The consumer was unable to unlock the door when she left for work on 8-29-05. As of now the problem is still has not been solved. The consumer stated son-in-law was able to fix the door. Update 4/25/07.
The drivers side door was completely locked, the remote key pad or keys did not work. Had used the remote to unlock doors the same as always. Contacted manufacturer, who said to contact the dealer. But dealer said never heard of it. Consumer did not want to pay the dealer to fix it. Found a forum online where other people had the same problem. This happened July 29, 2005.
The contact owns a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport. The contact stated that when he turns the key in the unlocked door of his vehicle, the doors become locked. When he turns the key in the opposite direction, the doors still remain locked. When he presses the power lock/unlock button from inside the vehicle, it will lock the doors but fail to unlock them, causing passengers to be trapped in the vehicle. The contact has had to exit through the window. He has not taken the vehicle to a repair shop because he would have to pay for the repairs and he feels the failure should be recalled. The current mileage was 80,000 and failure mileage was 60,000.
