2 Seats problem of the 2000 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

I got into my car to go to lunch from my place of employment with my ceo. When I sat down the seat fell back and the seat back would not catch again. I took my life into my hands driving home that evening. Contacted our local Ford dealer where we purchased the car, they said the part was no longer available and they could not fix it. They never informed us of a recall. Until exploring the internet today 10-25-2013 we did not realize there was a recall at all. Nhtsa campaign id # 03v281000/NHTSA action #pe03020 of August 5-2013. Now we can not locate the part.

3 Seats problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

Was driving around the city when I reach into my pocket to get my phone and hear a loud thump coming from the seat and the next thing I notice is the seat reclining all the way back. I was able to bring it back up by folding the exterior passenger seat to provide some sort of support. When I arrived home I tried inspecting what the issue was and saw a large fracture right next to the reclining mechanism. This is potentially a hazard that can one day cause a severe accident. I was lucky enough to have been driving slow but if I were to be in the freeway then it might have been something more serious. This large fracture seems to derive from a poorly designed seat that weak metal of some sort.

4 Seats problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

1997 Ford explorer and began to back out of my parents driveway on the way to work. I used the electrical seat mover button to move my seat back a few inches and within only 10 seconds smoke was in my face. I jumped out of the car, turned the car off, and ran in my house. I got water to try and extinguish the smoke and opened my back door and looked under the seat and there was intense sparking which turned into flames and within minutes my entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. Fire and police came and extinguished it after flames reached about 20 feet. There was property damage, with along losing the entire vehicle (engine was somehow in fine shape), but luckily, it happened when I was in my driveway and not on the highway as I am alive. I sent Ford 40 pictures, police report, video of the incident that we caught, title of vehicle, etc. It has caused me an incredible inconvenience in my life, I now walk a mile to a subway station which takes me to a train station which then gets me to work. Knowing it was an older car, but a popular one at that, I figured that Ford would reimburse me with a used car and the property damage, especially given how lucky that no death or injuries resulted. They informed today they wouldn't give me a dime because they don't deem that a defect through their analysis (though the car sits like a toxic wasteland in my driveway with no one from Ford even inspecting it). They came to their decision within one day of having my materials.

5 Seats problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 06/05/2010

1999 Ford Explorer Sport drivers seat back unlatched itself while driving. Luckily only 20 mph! rear passenger drivers side seat is folded down forward to hold drivers seat in place, until I can find another used seat.

6 Seats problem of the 2005 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 09/06/2009

My 2005 Ford explorer has 79,000 miles on it. Over the last year the padding/cushioning in the left front seat (the driver's seat), against the door, has deteriorated to a dangerous level. The metal frame is easily felt, with the driver's left arm, through the seat cover. In addition, the left side of the bottom padding feels one or two inches lower than the right side. This produces an awkward driving posture and the driver must lean against the door to compensate for the loss of cushioning.

7 Seats problem of the 2000 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

The driver side rear bottom frame failed in a non moving area. This cause the back of the seat to fall back as the hinge for seat tilt came out of the top due to this failure. Thank god I was in my driveway or we would have had a wreck. Structural steel in a seat frame should not fail in an 8 year old car. The car has not been in a wreck on the seat abused. The driver weigh 200 lbs or less.

8 Seats problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 06/25/2008

Ford issued a recall for a bolt replacement in the seat. Safety recall 03s04 refers. Beach Ford dealership has declined to conduct the repair due to time of the recall (5 years). The dealership stated that the bolt had already sheared and since the recall was so old they would not repair.

9 Seats problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 08/01/2006

Front drivers side seat tilt lever broke off, passenger side bent. There are other reports of the same thing happening to other owners.

10 Seats problem of the 2000 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 12/21/2002

Upon entering my vehicle, sitting in the driver's seat, and restinng my back against the seat while in an upright position, the back of the seat collapsed. This all occurred prior to the vehicle being started and engaged in any gear, which is probably the only reason the incident did not result in a serious or fatal accident. Due to the collapse of the seat, I did sustain a back injury/strain.

11 Seats problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 12/04/2002

While driving on the highway the driver side seat back declined backwards. This resulted in the driver having poor visibility. Please provide more details. Ts.

12 Seats problem of the 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 06/17/2001

Customer complains that back bench seat is of such design that when children sit on it, and brake is applied seat will move up, and start to flip forward. This does not happen when adults sit on bench. Vehicle taken to dealer 3 times, found no problem with seat.

13 Seats problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 05/01/2001

Both seat tilt levers bend and then break off after attempting to straighten them once too many times. New design strengthens the brackets. If the brackets break off and there is a small child in the back, adults will not be able to remove small children quickly during an emergency since they can't tilt the seats forward out of the way.
