The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. While having the vehicle repaired under NHTSA campaign id number: 11v385000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting) the contact was informed that the fuel tank had began to leak were the straps were replaced and needed to be repaired. The contact was informed that the fuel tank would not be repaired under the recall. The current and the failure mileages were 118,000.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford f150. While driving approximately 35 mph the contact heard a thumping noise underneath the vehicle. The contact exit the vehicle, inspected it and noticed the fuel tank had detached from the underneath the vehicle. The fuel tank had a hole in it and there was approximately 20 gallons of fuel spilling out of the fuel tank. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop where the fuel tank, vent pressure sensor, fuel line and fuel tank strap were replaced which included repairing the wires. The contact was unable to confirm if the fuel tank strap was corroded. The vehicle was repaired. There was an open investigation under NHTSA action number ea11006 ( fuel system, other:storage:tank assembly fuel system, other:storage:tank assembly:mounting fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting) which may be related to the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford f150. The contact stated that the fuel tank strap was loose and the contact was concerned of the possibility of the fuel tank detaching from the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or repairs. The failure mileage was 160,000 and current mileage was 163,000.

I own a 1998 Ford F-150 4x4 and I am send this report after reading an article online that you were investigating the mounting strap's one the fuel tank. I wanted to report that I have had the same problem with mine. I was driving down the highway after filling up my truck when I started smelling gas fumes, I pulled over and upon inspection I found my fuel tank was almost on the ground the rear strap had broke due to rust. I had leaked raw fuel for about 6 miles and had lost about 1/4 of a tank. The tank falling resulted in the tank pulling away from the filling neck at the tank connection and stressed the fuel line connections. I have since fixed the problem at the cost of $45. 61. I just wanted to report this problem. Thank you.

I recently read about straps supporting gas tank on my type vehicle rusting out. I checked my vehicle and found one of the straps supporting the gas tank had rusted out and has broken loose. It is presently in the process of being repaired.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. While the contact was dispensing fuel into the fuel tank, the fuel tank suddenly detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where they informed the contact that the fuel tank support straps completely rusted. The vehicle was repaired with the replacement of the fuel tank straps. The failure mileage was 200,000. The VIN was unavailable.

Fuel tank mounting straps are failing due to rust and corrosion cause to possible fuel tank damage and loss. Tank not secure and wearing through tank it self because of rubbing resulting in holes in fuel tank. Explosion is possible !.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford f150. The contact stated that he refueled the vehicle and parked it at his residence. The following morning, the fuel tank had fractured and was sitting on the ground directly under the vehicle. Upon further inspection, he discovered that the fuel tank belt was corroded. The contact owns a 1998 Ford f150. While driving 15 mph the fuel tank fell off the vehicle. The contact stated that the straps to the fuel tank broke in half. The failure also caused the fuel fill pipe to break. The contact pulled over to the side of the road to inspect the vehicle and with assistance the fuel tank was strapped back onto the vehicle allowing the contact to drive to his residence. The vehicle was in the dealers possession when the complaint was filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was unable to provide a VIN. The failure and current mileage were approximately 120,000.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. The contact was driving 60 mph on a busy highway when the straps holding the fuel tank fractured from the vehicle. The tank ruptured and gasoline fuel was spewed onto the vehicle and onto the highway. The vehicle was towed to the contacts residence. The vehicle was not inspected or repaired for the failure. Theo contact discovered the failure was caused by extreme rust and corrosion. The manufacturer offered no assistance. The current and failure mileage was approximately 181,000.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford f150. The contact stated that there was a dragging noise heard from under the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and found that the fuel tank was separated and dragging on the ground, leaking fluid. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was located at the fuel tank strap, which was corroded and causing the fuel tank to separate. The dealer replaced the fuel tank and the straps. The manufacturer was contacted and denied assistance with the fuel tank replacement, because the fuel tank was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 11v385000 fuel system (gasoline: storage: tank assembly: mounting). The failure mileage was 200,000 and the current mileage was 220,000.

On June 12,2010, the front fuel tank strap broke. The fuel tank did not leak or catch on fire. After purchasing new straps and installing them. The vehicle is back on the highway. Note: this vehicle passed a pennsylvania state safety inspection on 05/24/2010 by a Ford dealer. Component # 2 gasoline storage component # 3 tank assembly mounting (straps).

The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. The contact was driving approximately 25 mph when a loud noise was heard from outside the vehicle. After pulling over he noticed that the fuel tank was fractured and detached from the vehicle. Approximately nine gallons of gasoline was spilled and caused a minor fire, but the fire was quickly extinguished. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where they advised the contact that the fuel tank fractured due to the corrosion of both fuel straps. The fuel tank, straps and other unknown components were repaired. The contact later received notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 11v385000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting). The manufacturer was contacted to seek reimbursement and a claim was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 151,181.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving 2 mph, the fuel tank detached from the vehicle and began to leak fuel. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop where the contact was informed that one of the straps which held the fuel tank in place fractured due to corrosion. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. Approximately 18 months later the manufacturer was again notified and the contact was informed that the vehicle was included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 11v385000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting). The vehicle was not yet taken in for repair. The failure mileage was 128,000.

The vehicle was towed to his residence. The gasoline was drained and the contact is in the process of getting a new tank and straps. The dealer stated that there were no recalls for this failure. The vehicle was repaired by an independent mechanic at the owner's expense. Most recently, there was a recall pertaining to the similar defect under NHTSA campaign id number 11v385000 (fuel system, gasoline: storage: tank assembly: mounting). The contact planned to take the vehicle to an authorized dealer for inspection to verify whether the recall remedy should be performed on the vehicle even though there had not been a failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000. Updated 11/15/lj the consumer stated in 2009 the gas tank straps failed and caused damage to the gas tank and fuel sending unit. The current recall, only allows the fuel tank straps to be replaced. Updated 11/16/11.

The contact called about a 1998 Ford f150. The driver filled the vehicle with fuel and, the next morning while driving, the front of the gas tank fell onto the road. The consumer hit a bump in the road and the gas tank came loose and caused gas to spill over the road. A police report was filed. The vehicle was inspected by the tow truck driver, who discovered that the strap holding the fuel tank was rusted. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop and the mechanic stated that a new fuel tank and strap were needed. The vehicle was being repaired at the time of the complaint. The manufacturer has not been notified. The speed was unknown. The current and failure mileages were approximately 93,000. Updated 08/12/10 the consumer stated there was no fire. Updated 08/17/jb.

Straps retaining the fuel tank failed resulting in the fuel tank dragging on the road. Was able to temporarily retain tank with ratcheting tie down strap and get vehicle home safely. I was lucky that the failure occurred at low speed, and not on a highway as this could have resulted in fire and or injuries.

The contact owns a 1998 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 35 mph the front side of the gasoline tank fell down towards the front of the vehicle. The contact was able to continue driving the vehicle home. The dealer was contacted and a replacement strap for the fuel tank was ordered. The contact repaired the vehicle. There was an open investigation under NHTSA action number ea11006 (fuel system, other:storage:tank assembly fuel system, other:storage:tank assembly:mounting fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting). While driving approximately 35 mph the contact also heard a banging noise. When the contact inspected the vehicle he noticed the rear spring shackle was broken and severely corroded. The contact replaced the rear spring shackle. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

: the contact stated while turning a corner at 10 mph, a loud bang was heard. The vehicle was pulled over and upon inspection, the contact found the front of the fuel tank on the ground. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, where two of three fuel tank bands were replaced because of corrosion. This vehicle was located in a salt belt state. Updated 05/04/06.

Failure Date: 07/21/2005

Contact stated while driving the front straps on the gas tank broke, causing the front tank to hit the ground and rupture. Consumer had just filled the tank and gasoline spilled out onto the highway. The fire department and the emergency management agency were on the scene where this occurred. There was a report from the emergency management agency. Consumer contacted the manufacturer, they said there were no other complaints of this nature, but for the consumer to keep his receipts in case there was a recall. The vehicle was towed from the highway to a local service dealer. The service dealer stated that one of the straps rusted.
