Rear lights, including brake, turn signals, and hazard lights quit working. This issue can be found on many online Ford F-150 forums. The steering column wiring is too short, and breakage in the wire, or connectors can occur with the tilt steering mechanism. The tilt steering mechanism and short wiring has caused the connection to break inside the steering column trim on our vehicle, which caused the lights to stop functioning properly. I inspected the problem, and found the connector can move freely. I feel this is an issue since I am able to locate many others that have had the same issue from 1997 up to 2001 Ford F-150s.
May 19, 2011 at around 4:20 am we were awaken by our neighbors that our truck was on fire. Our 2001 Ford f150 was on fire, an explosion had made a huge hole in the hood on the front of the driver side. The truck had last been driven the morning of may 17, 2011 and had been sitting in our driveway since then. The firemen said the fire was due to electrical wiring. We always kept up with all required maintenance. We had no idea of the problems Fords were having, we now only have one vehicle to get around and the worst part is that it's a 2004 Ford f250 which could also be a recall vehicle. Our income is very tight because my mother is very sick and we are sending money for her medication and expenses, we have no way of getting another vehicle. Our Ford f250 is a diesel and diesel fuel is very high. Someone please help! not sure what we're suppose to do or if Ford will be responsible.
- the contact owns a 2001 Ford F-150. While driving 40 mph the vehicle made a loud popping sound similar to a truck back firing. The mechanic stated the spark plug and coils werecausing the failure. This failure occurred on 2 previous occasions. The recent failure the mechanic was unable to repair by changing the spark plugs, the damagewas more advanced and costly. I went fishing one early morning and I stopped for gas and noticed that my lights would not turn off. I normally keep the switch in the auto-detect mode. I switched to off and they still would not turn off. After getting to the dock, I turned off the motor and locked it. My F-150's headlights would not turn off and would blink on and off. The switch would not work, nor did locking the vehicle turn off the lights. I expected the battery saver would activate to turn off the exterior lamps. It also failed. The battery died and I had to be towed into the dealer. Dealer states it was a wiring harness (#12, #160 and #161) that shorted a relay and killed the battery. The parts were not covered under warranty. Parts and labor were $612.

Vehicle had approx. 60k miles. Was parked in driveway for about one half hour. Neighbor saw fire on the ground under the drivers side of the engine compartment toward the rear(firewall). Cruise control quit working about 2 weeks prior to the fire. Fire origin is in vicinity of brake master cylinder. Typical of cruise control deactivation switch failure. Parts were recovered but aluminum band on hexport body was melted away therefore do not have date code.
Noticed cruise control went out did not think much about it. Smelled burning drove into my drive way went in house started dinner my husband went out to run to the corner store and my truck was on fire. Burnt inside of engine yes old parts are there nothing has been repaired as of yet. Very dangerous situation could of been hurt or my child could of been hurt. Could of been property damage if I had not caught the fire when I did could of burned my house down and others around me.
While the vehicle was under warranty it experienced problems with the turn signal. The technician stated that they replaced the wiring harness but it was too short. Currently without warranty the vehicle experienced the same problem. The vehicle had been taken to the same dealer who stated that the wiring harness was too short. The wiring harness was too short when the tilt wheel was down and the turn signals did not work.
Sparkplug blown out of engine head.
After inspection of vehicle, mechanic noticed that main ground wiring was hanging which could result in a short circuit or possible fire. Dealer found main ground cable disconnected.
