1 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2025

The truck has a body frame that was cracked in several spots and welded back together in more then 5 different spots and the welding job is very poor. The truck has a power steering line leak, cvs axle leaks and a exhaust manifold leak. The dealership fixed upper ball joints when we agreed on lower and upper in the front. They added a exhaust but did not do the job correctly with completing the job and the welding of it. Ive made a complaint with the loan company and I as well have talked to the owner of the dealership and he fights that none of those things are wrong with the truck and im lying but I have had a inspection done on the truck. When I got the truck I looked it over and so did my brother I pointed the issues of what needed fixed that I could see and that was not done. I then started having issues with the truck and took it to a mechaninc and had an inspection done.

2 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2019

Three months ago I heard a pop noise under the hood then shortly after the steering began to feel stiff even on the return after turning I needed to help. Upon inspection I found the lower intermediate steering shaft joints are extremely corroded and needs to be replaced upon checking this seems t be a large problem on this vehicle. I have had much older vehicles that have never had this issue.

3 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2018

Steering became stiff. Vehicle was hard to maintain even on straight road. After my inspection, I found that the steering shaft was horribly corroded at the universal joint. I will not drive this vehicle until I repair it. It is at the point where it could break and loose all control of steering. Very dangerous. I have been a mechanic for over 30 years I have never seen this in any vehicle, no matter what age.

7 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2018

Ok when I turn my steering wheel to turn it sticks and have almost hit other cars have to turn wheel back like the power steering goes out but mostly at low speeds. . This is very dangerous . . I have done some checking at it appears to be the steering shaft u joints freeze up due to lack of able to grease them and bad design my truck only has 49,000 miles on it and should not have this problem I see many have had same issue I think it should be recalled and repaired by Ford for safety because steering sticks when turning .

8 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2018

Cam phasers went out twice before 150k. Steering shaft and steering fluid lines rust out around 150k.

9 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

Steering locks up when cornering or while driving straight and will not return to center without being forced no matter what surface you are driving on it has been reported that steering shafts are defective and were recalled in Lincoln and Mercury cars and suvs. This is an accident waiting to happen with very good chance of it being fatal.

10 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2016

Steering became tight and heavy making it hard to turn. My mechanic found the lower universal joint on the steering shaft had heavy corrosion and didn't function. He replaced the steering shaft. Truck had 87,000 miles. This is a very dangerous condition and should be the subject of a factory recall.

11 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2016

The contact owns a 2008 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 72,792.

12 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2016

Steering became very heavy, almost like power steering was gone. Very hard to turn and control the truck while moving. Suddenly loosens up and works as normal. Dealer says it is the steering shaft and now refuses to fix it. I see a lot of the same complaints here, why isn't Ford being held responsible? this is very dangerous and life-threatening. I'm glad it happened to me and not to my wife; I don;t think she would have had the strength to control the truck and could have killed or severely injured herself or others. This needs to be addressed!.

13 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2016

Steering shaft made from inferior material causing it to malfunction. Very hard to turn.

14 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2016

My brother in law has a 2008 Ford F-150 and said his steering seized up and after checking fluid, belts, etc. It appeared the steering shaft u-joints were binding. Last week my 2008 f150 experienced the same problem. Why hasn't Ford been liable for this safety issue. After checking various Ford sites, this is a major problem with f150's.

15 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2016

I have a 2008 Ford f150 I was making a right turn off of a main road into a driveway while applying slight braking pressure when the steering wheel completely locked up and braking was stiff at the pedal causing a near collision into a tree line. The engine remained running never died. I had to shut off the engine and restart to regain control of the steering. No warning lights are on. No dash indicators of any errors. I have called the dealership and they say they have never heard of this issue. All maintenance has been meticulously up to date. I will be taking my truck in for diagnostic in the morning.

16 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2016

Intermediate steering shaft corroded, causing stiff steering, hazardous to drive, particularly when making turns, maneuvering.

17 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2015

While making left or right turns the steering gets hard to steer then it loosens up making it over steer. I believe it is in the steering shaft u-joint because it is all rusted.

18 Steering problem

The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000. Ak.

19 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2014

Steering sticks.

20 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2014

My truck has 81k miles on it and the torque convertor has gone bad. I have never in the past heard of a bad torque convertor from normal wear and tear. The top of my steering wheel is showing major wear. My wife's 2000 Mini van has no wear on it. Why would the top of my steering wheel be falling apart?.

21 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2014

While making a left hand turn, noticed steering became very tight. Had to force it then it "released" resulting in an over steer and almost veering to oncoming traffic. Centering the wheel also became difficult and resulting in oversteer the opposite way. Same problem - right or left hand turn. Was intermittent but has become chronic now and getting worse. Have not had it in the shop yet.

22 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2014

When I was making a left turn off a highway ramp, the steering wheel locked up & then snapped back & sprained my wrist. I don't care about my wrist, but I do care about the defective lower steering shaft that was engineered wrong to start with & you made Ford issue a recall (because of the defect)in all there mid sized & highend cars along with Lincoln & Mercury models because it's a major safety problem. What you didn't do is, order a recall for all Fords that has the same lower steering shaft! why? you say it's not a safety problem in the F-150, why? just because it's a truck or Ford payed you off not to issue the recall for the F-150's?? if it's a defected part in there cars,it's the same part put in F-150's,made by the same CO. . I pd $38,000 for a truck that has the same defected part you made them issue a recall. Some lincolns & Mercury cars recalled are heavier than my F-150,but that dosn't matter to you. I almost crashed threw the guard rail & if I did, I would be dead!! I want to know how your agency excluded the F-150 in the recall?? are you people engineers? how in the world could you exclude any vehicle in the recall that has the same defected part in it? please e-mail me the reason why a defected part Ford made,is only a safety issue in cars, but not the F-150"s that has the same lower steering shaft's. I really want to know. Think of this, a Mercury sable had the same problem I had while making a left turn, the Mercury would hit the guard rail & stop, my F-150 would of went up & over the guard rail & fall to my death!! a defected part is a defected part,no matter what vehicle it's in. I want to know why you think it's ok for million's of F-150's to have defected lower steering shaft's?? god for bid my children ever got hurt because you idiot's said a defected part is ok on F-150's!!.

23 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2013

Steering wheel has become difficult to turn. Feels as if it is locking up and I really have to muscle it back to center after taking a sharp turn. I took it to my mechanic and he lubricated a u joint on the steering shaft which helped and told me to bring it back if/when it starts binding up again. He informed me he has replaced the lower steering shaft on other f150's due to severe rust/corrosion at the joint. I saw recently Ford issued a recall on crown victoria's with some type of steering issue so I figured I would submit this complaint since I anticipate having to replace the steering shaft in the near future.

24 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2013

When turning left or right the steering gets stiff and jerking causing oversteer and erratic motion. Added powersteering fluid but did not help.

25 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2013

Steering got very hard to turn. This has happened on numerous occasions now. Use wd-40 to loosen the knuckle.

26 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2013

Power steering became intermittent and vehicle would become difficult to control. Remedy was to replace the faulty, rusted lower linkage in the steering assembly.

27 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2013

I have a 2008 F-150. As I was taking an exit off the highway, the steering wheel looked up & I couldn't turn the wheel & ended up on the grassey area of the exit. . The problem is the lower steering shaft u-joint bind's up & locks. There is a design flaw in the u-joint, there is no way to grease or lube the u-joint. I have notified Ford many times with no answers or response. On the Ford forum site, there are thousands of F-150 owners who have or had the same problem with trucks who's warrenty's just ended & had to pay $500 plus to fix it, there are some who crashed because they couldn't turn the wheel. I was lucky but it's a major problem Ford woun't correct til somebody dies. I pd. $30,000 for this truck & owe $16,000 and shouldn't have to pay $500+ to be safe. How can you make Ford correct this problem? I can send you thousand's of owners e-mail's sent to me from the forum. Bad enough we have to pay alot of money to fix this & still owe a ton of money for the loan for the truck, it's a major safety defect from Ford. Please e-mail me back with your advice on what to do. Thank you john.

30 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2012

It felt as if steering was binding when making a turn. It would suddenly break free and oversteer was a problem. When coming out of a turn the wheel would not center on its own, but had to be turned back to the straight ahead position. Spoke with a Ford dealer and they wanted an exorbitant charge to just look at the vehicle and professed they had not heard of the problem before. I went on the internet and found at least two hundred (200) references to the exact issue. It was the lower steering shaft universal joints that had severely corroded. I lubed the joints and things went back to normal for a few days and the binding returned. I installed a new lower shaft - Ford part8l3zb767b- and the truck steers like new. The original part ended in a and the b represents an updated version. Obviously Ford is aware of the problem and has engineered a fix - and never notifying the consumer. A true concern is the following. Over the past few months when driving straight the wheel showed about 15 degrees of right input while tracking straight, hands off. I had the alignment checked and all ok. It was not pulling, just a displaced from center wheel position. This has all disappeared with the new shaft. On the same roads, same conditions the wheel is perfectly centered. This tells me the old shaft has suffered some type of deformation, most likely associated with the universal joints on said shaft. This is a definite safety issue and should be addressed by Ford.

31 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

This is the second time the high pressure power steering hose needs to be replaced in 13 months.

32 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2011

While driving on interstate, truck self engaged in 4x4, but only driver side wheel locked causing severe pull towards left side. Almost lost control. Dealership has replaced all components twice now and the problem is intermittent.

33 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2011

The contact owns a 2008 Ford f150 super cab. The contact stated that the vinyl steering cover was defective and separated from the steering. The manufacturer was contacted but would not assist with the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 33,612 and the current mileage was 37,171.

34 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2011

On my wife's 2008 f150 quad cab truck at 37000 miles, I notice that the tires on the front of the truck where wearing on the inside, so with a trip planed for florida, I set up for our local dealer to do an alignment. She drop off her truck at the service department and went on her way, within 30 mintues she got a call from the service manager. He informed her that the upper ball joints would need to be replaced. The dealer said that since the trucks warranty (the truck has 38000 miles on it) had ran out they could not replace the loose ball joints. But they put a new set of tires on and charged us for an alignment. This truck has never been off road and it never indicated that there was a problem with the front end at all. I have been to florida twice. And I have owned 19 different Fords in my 55 years, 12 of these veichels were purchased new, three were 4x4 with large tires and most had over a 100,000 miles, and I have never had to change a ball joint or any part of the front end steering parts. I am not doing a commerical for Ford , I just want Ford to repair my truck, I am in the same boat as everyone else, no money!!!.

35 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2010

Bought a 2008 Ford f150 from a so called reputible dealer. Had issues after the first couple of months with a vibration took vehicle back to dealer ran a diagnostics check on it, they said nothing is wrong. Two years later problem has escalated where truck vibrates so bad that it spills a can of soda. Ford now says no warranty left on vehicle and we have to pay for fixing. It was under warranty two years ago when problem arised. I am very unhappy with the dealership and Ford itself. I am thinking about filing a law suit against Ford if the problem is not rectified.
