36 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2020

On two occasions I have been stopped and waiting to turn left across two lanes of traffic on a four lane state highway. The engine auto stop feature shut the engine off. When I let of the brake, the engine auto started and I began to accelerate. I had no power steering and nearly drove into a ditch. It seems that there is a delay between when the engine auto starts and when the power steering works. This is very dangerous as it is difficult to turn the wheel without power steering. Especially when crossing lanes of oncoming traffic.

37 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2020

The steering on this vehicle will lock in place when making a left turn. You have to physically force the steering wheel to release to keep from either crossing the center line or running off the road. This happens at speed around 50 mph and up. Have not wrecked it yet but have come close. We have had it in the Ford dealer 4 times with not success yet.

38 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2020

When vehicle is stopped and the auto start-stop is engaged, moving the vehicle steering wheel becomes very difficult. Upon releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle will start and begin to move forward however, the vehicle still is extremely difficult to steer. This difficulty will last for a few seconds until power steering is restored. This problem started intermittently but has now become a regular event.

39 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2020

I was taking my grand daughter to school and she got in the front passenger side, she closed the door and it would not "latch" and we could not get it to latch to secure the door from opening while driving. This has happened numerous times. I was afraid the door would open while driving and fall out (this needs fixed ASAP. Another problem is when driving 60 mph or greater the steering will "catch" that is when going around a turn left or right when turning the steering wheel it kind of jerks and doesn't maintain constant turn it seems to loose a constant control. This can cause an over correction and loss of control. In order to try to control I have to have both hands on the steering wheel and know it going to happen. What would a young inexperienced driver do. . . Most likely over correct and crash.

40 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2020

Have noise when oporating the vehicle.

41 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2020

Truck has 24,000 miles going down the interstate truck will jerk right or left and steering gets hard have to keep very alert while driving not know when it will jerk right or left very dngerous.

42 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2020

The steering wheel is coming loose.

43 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2020

I performed a wheel alignment but the car is still going to one side if I let go of the steering this vehicle was involved in a car accident I dont feel safe because I cant keep the car in a straight line.

44 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2019

The automatic start/stop function turns the truck "off" at a stop. When waiting to make a left turn across traffic and the engine has turned off and the wheel is engaged in a turning angle, the power steering does not turn back on as the engine turns back on. The result is a loss of power steering through the turn putting me in multiple situations where I have no power steering into oncoming traffic until it finally engages approximately 2 seconds later. In multiple situations I have had to use all of my strength to turn the wheel and the vehicle without power steering, out of the way of traffic as I am making a turn.

45 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2019

After stopping in traffic and waiting to turn left in front of oncoming traffic, the truck would not steer as I accelerated from a stop. This caused me to drive straight across the intersection into oncoming traffic rather than making my planned, immediate left turn. As the truck drove straight rather than turning, and as I was attempting to force the wheel left with both hands, suddenly the steering function returned to normal. I narrowly avoided an accident due to the unexpected loss of steering control. I immediately stopped the truck and contacted the service department at the nearest Ford dealership. A service appointment was not available until the following week so I drove the truck home. The next day (Saturday) a service adviser from the Ford dealer called and asked me to drop the truck off the following Monday afternoon. I have been able to duplicate the problem since the initial incident. In my opinion the issue may be related to the improper function of the power steering after the stop /start function of the truck is activated. There is a measurable lag between the engine's re-start and the reactivation of the power steering. The truck is allowed to travel before the power steering is functioning normally. I feel this is a very serious safety issue and needs to be corrected.

46 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2019

I purchased the used 2018 Ford f150 platinum at lithia Ford, boise id with 15k miles on it. Since the day I bought it the front end has been hard to keep on the road. I have taken this unit to the dealer twice now and they have had the unit 40 plus days trying to repair the steering issue. The truck will pull into a right or left by itself and is very unsafe at the dealership they verified the complaint and said the steering gear was the defect after having the unit 2 weeks. They replaced the strg gear and said it was repaired. I picked the unit up and drove it and it was the same so I took it back the next day. They drove it with me and again we verified the complaint. The Ford technical rep came out to the dealer and checked the truck. He also verified the complaint the then said it was the tires and wheels and they all drive like that since its a platinum model. He stated I drive one and it does the same thing. The tires and wheels are the factory oem parts nothing has been changed or modified. The truck is unsafe and not stable. The service writer drove it for a week and he confirmed the defect but said Ford will not make any more repairs because they do not know how to repair the issue and said we will call you if they come up with something. I am filing this complaint due to the safety concern of myself and other people on the roadways. Its dangerous. I had another 2018 f150 sport without lane assist and it drove fine. Both units were purchased from the same dealership.

47 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2019

1. ) f150 supercab drifts erratically. Ford has aligned vehicle twice, but issue remains. Feels like truck is in a high-wind environment, but it is a calm day. Truck will veer off road unless extreme care is exercised. 2. ) transmission lugs on acceleration, particularly @ 1100rpm and 38mph. 3. ) hard "clunk/thump" sensation at low speeds, causing severe "whip-lash" action to occupants of vehicle. 4. )when taking slow left turn up a steep incline the truck lugs and transmission feel like it is slipping and unable to downshift, causing a significant loss of power and momentum. 5. ) engine stalls when leaving stop light. Dash lights come on saying" auto startstop shift to p, then restart engine. "this is in the middle of a busy intersection. I am attaching a picture of the dashboard error. Please notice I am still in "d" drive when this message came up.

48 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2019

The steering wheel wanders or drifts slightly left or right on its own requiring excessive driver input to maintain a straight line. It can be alarming if you look down for a second to change a radio station or check a mirror and look back forward and notice you are drifting into another lane.

49 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2019

Was driving back to my office and on the on ramp from a highway to interstate 95 south. I eased left to merge onto the interstate going about 45mph and increasing speed when my steering wheel pulled left quickly on its own power and steered us head on towards the metal guard rail in the center median. I tried to pull right but there was resistance. I noticed an uphil decent fault on my dash just before my truck struck the guard rail. Luckily I was able to last second pull the vehicle right enough where it wasn't a full head on collision and my employee in the passenger side was just sore after the fact. I am currently undergoing medical tests for back, neck and shoulder numbness as well as tension headaches . No airbags deployed! Ford said once the body is fixed where they can run tests they will see what can be done, but I do not feel safe driving this vehicle. It literally tried to kill us. There was also a service advancetrack light on the dash. I previously had those faults and the dealership said it was a wheel bearing that they needed to replace. Something is going on with these vehicles.

50 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2019

Started to pull through a residential intersection after stopping at a stop sign. The truck completely shut off after moving about 5 feet pulling into the intersection. A message popped up on the dash screen about auto startstop and that I needed to put the truck in park and restart it. This is not something that can be done while the vehicle is in motion. I slowly rolled to the side of the street, put it in park and restarted. There were no more issues on the remaining 25 mile drive. The autostop feature had been disabled via the dash switch before ever leaving home. The switch was still illuminated amber showing that autostop had in fact been turned off manually before it happened on its own, while under power. With the engine not running, the power steering is also disabled. After a bit of investigation, I have found via online truck dedicated forums that I am not alone and this has happened to numerous people with f150's since 2015. The picture that I am attaching is not my own, but is the same message that was generated to me this morning. This picture is from another individual that this has also happened to and reported in the above mentioned forums. Autostop initiation of its own accord while underway could have dire consequences if pulling into oncoming traffic, through a busy intersection or simply driving down the road.

51 Steering problem

52 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2019

The key in the ignition alarm was constatntly sounding after the truck was shut off, after the key was removed. The dealer said it was a short in the ignition switch. This is a new 2018 truck what the heck is going on with Ford?.

53 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2019

While driving down interstate 10, my transmission abruptly downshifted to 1 at ~55 mph!! this was the worst of several instances of the transmission either failing to shift properly or jerking the vehicle when shifting gears. I've also had the vehicle stuck in 2nd gear while trying to enter the freeway. The dealership and Ford motor company show no concern as they rely on service codes instead of road tests and customer input. I hope I'm able to get another vehicle from a manufacturer I can trust. It's unfortunate because I have owned Ford F-150s for the past 6 years and driven them since high school. This new 10-speed transmission should've never been released to the public. I see others are having the same issue so hopefully a class action lawsuit is soon to follow!.

54 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2019

While driving the the electronic power steering system faulted and steer ability diminished greatly. There was no warning. It quit working. I was traveling at a low speed and was able to maintain control.

55 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the auto start and auto stop features caused the engine to shut off while traveling 3 mph around a curve. The failure also caused the power steering to seize. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 17,000.

56 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2019

Steering problem.

57 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2019

My 2018 f150 raptor has a vague steering feel and occasionally the truck will auto over correct the steering when trying to compensate for wind and weather. The alignment has been checked multiple times by both the dealership and independent shops and verified as correct. The steering when center will occasionally drift to one side or the other, also happens when cornering. It feels as though it's constantly windy when driving, even when there is calm weather. I've had the truck inspected by the dealership twice and they have contacted Ford direct who has replied the truck is behaving normally.

58 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2019

Auto start/stop creates a hazard while turning. For example, while turning left at a controlled intersection and waiting for oncoming traffic, truck shuts off. Upon restart, there is noticeable lag in power steering which effect the ability to turn. No ability to turn auto stop/start off permanently without voiding warranty. Crash stats prove left turning movements at intersections carry significantly high risk. Additional unpredictable steering behavior increases already high risk. I feel the system is functioning as designed. Power steering is not instant upon start up and auto start/stop functions smoothly unless waiting to turn.

59 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2019

Tl-the contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that due to the auto stop/start feature installed on the vehicle, when attempting to move from a light to make a right turn, there was a delay in the power steering feature. Keller Ford inc located at 3385 alpine Ave NW, grand rapids, mi 49544, (616) 784-6600, was contacted and informed of the failure. The manufacturer was also informed of the failure, case number: cas-17380347-f3k9t3. The approximate failure mileage was 7,000. Ah.

60 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2019

Truck pulls to the left, pulls to the right, steering wheel binds, steering goes against itself, pulsations in the steering. Truck is hard to drive. The truck has driven me off the road. The truck has had 3 alignments, steering gear has been replaced, technical service bulletin performed on power steering control module. 2 weeks after it had alignment and TSB performed, Ford engineer confirmed steering problem. Ford engineer said to do another alignment. Ford can not fix the problem and refuses. This truck is not safe to drive. I have reported this steering problem to Ford and nhsta numerous times. This truck should be removed from the road. I should not be expected to put my safety and the safety of others at risk with this truck. Please help.

61 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2019

My truck has had 3 alignments, replacement of steering gear, program update on power steering control module, steering wheel moved, and tires that have failed tread test, and I have filed complaints on this NHTSA website for same steering issues which are: (and Ford engineer comfirmed) pulls left and pulls right, binds, steering fights against itself and still after all the work and trips to dealership the truck is still difficult to drive and not safe to drive. What does it take for NHTSA to help get this truck off the road? does someone need to get hurt or killed 1st?.

62 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. When approaching a stop or making a right or left turn, the steering wheel seized. The contact cracked his elbow while attempting to turn the steering wheel. Medical attention was not received. The contact had to use more force than usual to turn and steer the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to other unknown dealers and serviced five times, but each repair failed. The vehicle was driven to astrog Ford (2028 7th st, parkersburg, wv 26101, (304) 485-8585) where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel module needed to be replaced. The dealer also stated that was "the nature of the truck and they should deal with it". The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 36,329.

63 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2019

Truck instantly pulls to the right, when steering wheel is straight, the truck drives immediately to the left, the steering wheel binds and will drive itself to the left, impulses in the steering wheel. Truck hus been to dealership 4 times for steering defect. Dealership has replaced steering gear, 2 alignments, balanced rotated tires, adjust air pressure. Dealership told me that I am wasting their time on "warranty work" this truck is not safe to drive, Ford is refusing to comply to my warranty, and Ford corporate will not do a manufacturer buy back. Ford will not give reasons for not doing buyback. Ford says this information is "internal thing". This truck is a danger to me, my kids, and everyone else on the road. Their should be a recall on these trucks for steering issues. Someone please help me.

64 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. While driving 3 mph and approaching a stop sign, the automatic engine shut off engaged when the brake pedal was released. Upon releasing the brake pedal, the steering wheel suddenly seized. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,459. The VIN was not available.

65 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2019

The steering constantly pulls to the left and pulls to the right. The steering has impulses that are felt in the steering during normal driving. The steering wheel oscillates and attempts to make steering corrections at any speed. The steering wheel will remain turned in one direction. For example, driving through a curve going left, hands can be removed from steering wheel and steering wheel will lock itself in position and stay turning left. The dysfunctional steering drove me off of a 2 lane road at 55mph. The poor steering of this vehicle creates an unsafe and not road worthy vehicle. The transmission can not decide which gear to be in creating pauses of power distribution to the rear wheels. The transmission shifts hard and pulls the vehicle back and forth creating loud clunking noises and rattling the passengers. The poor operation of the transmission creates unsafe driving conditions.

66 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

The steering of my 2018 f150 is sticking in places and has to be manually pulled out of the position. It has almost caused 3 head on collisions to date. Ford has had an opportunity to look at and address the issue, but informed me that that is just the way their new power steering works. They said they will continue to look at it, but there is nothing that can really be done to address it. Ford case number cas-16915256.

67 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2018

Tl-the contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. Contact stated that while driving at various speeds the vehicle steering wheel drifts to the left without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer casco bay Ford 1213 us 1, yarmouth, me 4096 (207) 846-2222 where it was diagnosed but unable to duplicate the issues. The vehicle was test drove but still unable to duplicate the issues. The alignment was repaired 3 times , all 4 tires were rotated. However failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact to take the vehicle back to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 228. Ck.

68 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2018

Vehicle equipped with auto stop start feature. When engine shuts off the electrically operated power steering also shuts off. Releasing the brake pedal restarts engine but power steering does not return for approximately 1-2 seconds. I've owned this truck since new. I currently have a little over 700 miles on the vehicle. Three times since purchasing the vehicle I have been making a left turn from a busy highway onto a secondary road and the stop start feature has engaged. I make the decision to turn and go but the truck has no power steering and I am moving forward. The vehicle is almost impossible to steer without power steering. There is a button on the dash to disable the system but the default is to turn the system on every time the vehicle is started. I am fearful that if my wife or other person not intimately familiar with how the system is designed to operate will be put at extreme risk. In my opinion this is an extremely unsafe design and should be removed or redesigned to enable the power steering to operate any time the key is in the ignition in the "on" position.

69 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2018

When the vehicle is stopped the stop/start technology disables the ability to turn the steering wheel. When it's time to accelerate and turn quickly the power steering does not become available for for some time. I have been close to crashing several times and hit a curb on one occasion as a result of not being able to steer. The dealer told me at the last visit this is normal because of the stop start technology and I just have to wait for the power steering to become available when the engine starts. This is impossible when making a turn into traffic since sometimes this needs to be a simultaneous action of accelerating and turning at the same time.

70 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. While driving various speeds, the vehicle drifted from side to side. The vehicle was taken to ron lewis Ford (300 9th Ave, beaver falls, PA), but the cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 500.
