Tailgate problems of the 2018 Ford F-150

The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the electric tailgate latch failed to latch properly, causing the tailgate to open unexpectedly. The contact pulled over to close the tailgate. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to file a complaint with NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

Tailgate opened on its own, unexpectedly, while driving. This has happened several times recently. It could be dangerous. Canada has issued a recall to correct this issue. Why not the us? the fix appears to be easy.

Tailgate opens while driving at both city street speeds and highway speeds. Allowing items in bed to fall out on road creating road hazard. This is more than an inconvenience it is dangerous and someone is going to killed. Do something about this. Please. Canada has already done the right thing and ordered the recall. If NHTSA responds to this problem too late or not at all NHTSA will have blood on their hands because it is not a matter of if serious injury and/or death occurs it is a matter of when.

When driving the tailgate will unexpectedly lower, this has happened multiple times with and without loads in the bed of the truck. The tailgate lowering has happened on the highways, city streets, turning and while parked.

Rear tailgate will come open by its self while driving.

Rear tailgate randomly opens and will not close at times.

The tailgate on my 2018 Ford f150 sporadically opens on its own while the vehicle is in motion. It has happened at least three seperate times while pulling a trailer causing damage to the tailgate. I have reported it to my Ford dealer but have been unable to duplicate the problem at time of complaint.

I bought this truck in February of 2019. Since then the tailgate has opened on its own while I was driving 5 times. This last time was on July 2nd, 2019.

Tailgate opened while driving on city street, notwithstanding that the gate was securely closed; had not been opened in weeks; and neither the tailgate release on key fob, nor the release button on the gate had been activated.

The tailgate on my 2018 Ford F-150 has the automatic open option from the key fob. I first experienced the tailgate had opened on its own when I went outside to go to work and found tailgate was open. I didn't think to much about it at the time. Then while I was pulling a trailer I went over a speed bump and heard a what sounded like something had fallen over inside trailer. Stopped to investigate and found tailgate had opened and fell on the trailer jack handle on the hitch. This broke the tailgate handle housing the button for opening tailgate, the light and backup camera. I had no idea how this could've happen. No way could the key fob could have activated the auto release as it was on the consul when this happened. I looked on the internet for any possible causes and found many others have had the same problem.

Electric tailgate seems to randomly open on it's own. It does it when truck is running, or turned on, parked or even driving. Very annoying and worried it will cause the tailgate to break or lose things in the bed. It does this several times a day. Most recent was 12 in 1 day.

Tl the contact called on behalf of the owner of a 2018 Ford F-150. The consumer stated that the tailgate opened twice while the vehicle was in motion. There was no warning indicator illuminated. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the consumer to NHTSA. The contact worked for autonation Ford katy (20777 katy fwy, katy, TX 77450, (281) 305-8949) and stated that the tailgate could be opened while the vehicle was in motion, especially with the key fobs. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

Rear electronic tailgate opens on its own while driving. This has happened more than 15 times in four months. Frequency increasing. Danger to others. A known issue on f250 and 350 models, now on f150 too.

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 20 mph in the rain, the tailgate fell down. The vehicle was taken to sheehy Ford of marlow heights (301-298-0793, located at 5000 auth rd, marlow heights, MD 20746), but the failure could not be diagnosed. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 4,500.

The vehicle is stationary and when the passenger door is unlocked with the key fob the tailgate fails down. When the driver exits the vehicle the tailgate falls down. By falls down I mean the tailgate on the pickup is closed and in the vertical position and the only way to open the tailgate is with the key fob. The tailgate fob is depressed and the tailgate opens (falls down) automatically. Only the tailgate controls are incorrectly opening the tailgate when the passenger door is opened with the key fob or when you get in the back doors. Also after driving the truck when opening the drivers door the tailgate drops down. If a child or adult happens to be behind the truck the can get hurt.
