1 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2012

I have an ongoing issue with the transmission DE-engaging when the temperature of the transmission warms up. When I accelerate when passing or using the cruise control the transmission will dis-engage leaving me with no forward power, I must put the car in neutral and hope it engages all the while almost being run over by two semi-trucks. This happened almost a dozen times down and back on my trip from buffalo to peapack NJ on Monday 4/16/2012. This is a know problem that Ford is aware on the Five Hundred model, montego and some fusion models. Many start to fail at less than 30,000 miles and happened at 65,000 miles on my vehicle. I consider this an extremely dangerous situation and amazed no one has been killed due to these defective transmissions. The Ford forum has over 10 pages of complaints regarding this problem. Ford told me they would not do anything unless there was a recall.

10 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2010

I am buying a 2005 Ford 500 limited with an 6 spd transmission it now has 136k miles on it. It has been a problem ever since I purchased the vehicle used from crossroads Ford in memphis. I had to have the engine replaced at 54k miles. Now the transmission/transaxle is starting to slip and stall in traffic. You start to move from a traffic light and it will go slowly then jump to about 4k to 6k on the tachometer and at that point the car stalls and you are about to be rear ended by other drivers due to the car stalling. According to Ford they have known of this problem but only offer selling you a new transmission which they should be responsible for since they built the product even if the factory warranty is gone. Cant afford to buy another car or trade this one in or get the transmission fixed according to Ford the replacement is around $4600. Don't have that kind of money lying around.

13 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2010

My wife has a 2005 Ford 500 and we witness a sudden lurch when shifting the vehicle out of park, andeven at times where we are at a standstill. This has been happening off and on for at least 2 years. We have contacted our local Ford dealership and we keep getting told its the air filter being dirty. I cleaned the filter(k&n) and reinserted it in the vehicle. We have not had any injuries or accidents as of yet, but we are afraid of the time where it does do it and cause an accident. Have there been other complaints about this problem?.

14 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2010

I own a Ford 500, I am now on my third replacement of a throttle body. I have found out that this is a common problem on that vehicle. This happens out of no where and is dangerous because when driving the vehicle it jumps forward and could cause an accident. Not only am I in danger but those in the vehicle are as well as those around me. The part is on back order for months but I have been able to get used throttle bodies but they keep going out and none have been successful. I just picked my vehicle up from Ford 3 days ago and its now back at the dealership yet again. The first time this happened I got stranded out of town for 4 days and had to drive half way back to my home town in a rental to get a used part and drive all the way back. This a huge inconvenience that has cost time and money. There is no telling how long this repair is going to take once again and how much money I will have to give away again.

15 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2009

I own a 2005 Ford 500 (se model) car. It just passed 52k miles and the transmission just broken when I drove at normal speed on highway. I was luck that I can still survive. The dealer inspected it and told me to replace whole transmission. From the similar reports from a lot of customers, this is obviously a manufacturing issue. Please investigate Ford company on their common transmission problem.

20 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2009

When the car is very warm (start after a short time of being parked or 100+ degree day), when the transmission is shifted into drive or reverse, the engine revs to 1,500 rpm and the transmission engages making the car lurch forward, then stalls occasionally. The service indicator (wrench) light comes on and the engine operates in fail-safe mode. If this happens, then the car lurches when you let of the throttle (transmission "clunks"). Turn the car off and let it sit until it cools and the service light turns off and the car drives normal again. It's a cvt transmission.

22 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2009

I purchased a used 2005 Ford Five Hundred in July 2008. At the time the car had 68k miles, and no warranty. In January, my car started down-shifting very rough around 1000 rpm. This happens at every down-shift after the engine reaches a certain temperature. It also shifts hard when I accelerate as if to pass someone on the interstate. Ford has flashed the computer and found no problems. They suggested that I replace the valve body and fluid. I have been checking message boards and have noticed many other consumers are having the same exact issue with their Five Hundreds, tauruses, and montegos with the cvt transmission. However, no one seems to have found a solution at this time, and Ford has not made any recalls. I refuse to shell out ridiculous amounts of money to "maybe" fix this serious transmission issue. Also, I am unable to trade my car for something else because it is now completely devalued. Please help the hundreds of Ford consumers who share in this issue.

24 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2008

Hi I'm from mexico and I got a problem with my Ford Five Hundred 2005 transmission which I have read a lot of consumers also got, in fact I was on my way to the job (in the chaotic city of mexico) when suddenly it began to jerk and then the car got no traction, I cant accelerate neither sustain velocity, fortunately the car that was behind me realize of my problem and aware the traffic to DE-accelerate, after that I stop the car and see that it was spilling oil from the transmission. I turn it off and restart the engine but the car still does not move by itself so I wait for the wrecking crane to take the car with the dealer. What impressed me is that the car only got 25,000 miles and it was spilling oil. The told me that the transmission must be changed, but my warranty run out on January and the change of will have a cost of 10,000 us dollars. I'm writing to you to check with Ford this problems cause the lose the lose control of the engine and the jerk spilling oil will probably have caused an accident.

25 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2008

26 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

I have an 05 Ford 500, 2 wheel drive, w/6 speed at/trans. At 30k miles it developed a transmission "slippage/jerk" when slowing to a stop from 35mph or less. I have also noticed the same when accelerating at highway speeds or climbing a hill when I hit passing gear. I cannot use the cruise control in hilly terrain because of this problem. It feels as if the whole front end of the car will jerk loose.

27 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2007

Car randomly stalls. On occasions when the accelerator is depressed the car does not move it stutters, I even tried to depress the gas pedal to the floor and still nothing. I have taken my car to the local Ford dealer for service. The only thing that I was told "the computer chip in the transmission needed updated. " ok this hasn't corrected my problem. I am afraid that this could cause me to get into an accident. I have two small children, I hope that they are not in the car when it happens. I am assumely that the reason this hasn't been recalled yet, is because Ford doesn't have a repair for this. Besides the obvious, replacing the transmission. Please look into this. You may need to drive one, I will let you use mine. Just so this gets taken care of.

28 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2007

2005 Ford Five Hundred with 51000 miles had check engine light come on. Car accelerates unexpectedly when shifting into reverse or from reverse to drive then lunges forward or backward like it will take off on its own. The engine surge can be felt even standing still at times. Told it is the throttle body and have been waiting for part as it is on backorder. This is an 800. 00 repair and I have been waiting almost a month. Someone could be injured when these vehicles lunge forward or backward unexpectedly. I see many many similar complaints with this model car and this particular part. I believe it should be recalled before someone is injured or worse.

At 43,000 miles now is sitting in the Ford dealer where I purchased at since last Friday sept 22,2006. His words were' if this was my car I would not be sitting in it, it's a risk to anyone's life" today, Ford informed me that they have to bring the transmission down and open it. They ask me every time to sign in acceptance they will pay for everything. It is being reported to consumer affairs department tomorrow, I have notified the bank who gave me the loan.
