Transmission has very hard and delayed upshift and downshift making it difficult to control speed when accelerating and decelerating. Rpm gets stuck around 3000 at lower speeds and upon engaging into gear has made my tires squawk with a sudden lunge in speed and same problem when trying to stop, the car lunges forward. It acts as though it is in neutral but then when it engages into gear sudden changes in speed occur causing rapid acceleration or deceleration. The problem gets worse after the car is up to normal operating temperature. It doesn't occur as often at colder operating temperature. This problem makes it difficult to get back up to safe highway speeds after having to stop for traffic or red lights as well as hard to get up to speed to safely merge into traffic from an on ramp. As far as "when" this happened it is every day as I drive daily.
Throttle/accelerator the car unexpectedly accelerates without pushing the pedal. I have almost hit vehicles and pedestrians. It appears to be getting worse and more dangerous.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. While driving various speeds, the vehicle suddenly accelerated independently and there was a sudden increase of engine rpms. In addition, the vehicle would suddenly stall and the fail safe engine sensor indicator illuminated on several occasions. The dealer cleaned the throttle body to remedy the failure, but the failure recurred approximately one year later. The manufacturer was notified of the failures, but no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 100,000.
On hot days, when backing out of parking spaces, the car has sometimes "surged" meaning that there has been unintended acceleration without the accelerator being pressed at all. I have had to suddenly and firmly put my foot on the brake to prevent the car from hitting other vehicles. This has happened on several occasions in August of 2012. I own a 2006 Ford Five Hundred also and it has had the same problem in the same conditions (filing separate complaint).
Driving in town, at approx 25mph. Car jerked/lurched suddently, then entered limp home mode. Pulled over, turned off car. Restarted and check engine light came on. Turns out it is a throttle body failure. Shop says this is a very dangerous situation - the car could suddenly accelerate/decelerate without notice. Looking at online forums - it seem a fairly common failure, and something Ford should issue a safety recall on.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced sudden acceleration while reversing from a parking space. The vehicle accelerated over a curve and crashed into a fence, fracturing the oil pan. A police report was filed for the incident. The contact had to shift into park in order to get the vehicle to stop. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was told that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 69,797.
Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. While stopped and depressing the brake pedal the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The contact changed the gear shifter to reverse and the vehicle accelerated backwards. After the acceleration the vehicle stalled. The failure occurred approximately four different times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The mechanic stated the throttle body needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the repairs would not be covered under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000. Ds.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. When the gear shift was placed in reverse the vehicle suddenly accelerated and the rpms increased. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for diagnostic testing who stated that the throttle body was defective. The manufacturer will be contacted. Updated 01/13/lj the consumer stated when she released the accelerator pedal, the vehicle did not decease in speed without applying the brake. The throttle body was replaced. Updated 04/19/11.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. The contact stated that when starting her vehicle and placing her foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and the rpm's increased. She was able to stop the vehicle forcefully by depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who advised her that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Within a year she experienced the identical failure. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who advised her that the transmission failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified offered her no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
Ford Five Hundred lunged dramatically as I attempted to make a right turn from a stopped position. I immediately attempted to brake in order to slow the car down and yield to a pedestrian that had begun to cross the street. It took an extreme amount of pressure on the brake pedal in order to fight engine's acceleration and stop the car. Upon removing my foot from the brake, the car attempted to re-accelerate hard again, scaring the pedestrian enough that they waved me through and refused to cross until I passed by. The next day, while parking the car in a public garage, the car suddenly lurched forward very hard, again requiring maximum effort to prevent accelerating. This time I was headed into a concrete wall and stopped 2 inches short. For the first time, car entered failsafe mode and presented a check engine light (this light had not been previously presented). Dealer informs me computer reports codes of p610b and p2106. They want to replace the throttle body assembly and reprogram the pcm. While I had experienced the sudden acceleration issue intermittently over the years; I never got resolution (unable to recreate the problem) and had never received a check engine light with this code before. Investigating this very expensive repair has led me to discover that my experience is not unique and is a recurring issue for this vehicle. Further, the costly repair being recommended appears to be a stop-gap fix at best with no certainty of actually fixing the problem.
2005 Ford Five Hundred. Consumer states problem regarding dangerous and potentially lethal failure mode the consumer stated he experienced sudden acceleration while in reverse gear. While backing out slowly, the vehicle suddenly accelerated on its own. A considerable amount of force had to be applied to the brake in order to stop the vehicle. The incident occurred on four other occasions. A computer diagnostics revealed no anomalies except for an inlet airflow disturbance attributed to a distorted filter. The filter was replaced and normal airflow was restored.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred ltd awd. The contact stated that he experienced a sudden acceleration twice. The failure occurred when he attempted to park the vehicle and again when he made a left turn, with his foot depressing the brake pedal. The contact continued to apply pressure to the brake until the vehicle came to a stop. The manufacturer was contacted; however, a report was not taken. The manufacturer stated they were not aware of the failure and to have the failure diagnosed by the dealer. The failure and the current mileages were 131,000.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. The contact stated that whether reversing or at a stop, the vehicle would suddenly accelerate abnormally. The failure was experienced numerous times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnosed that located the failure at the throttle body. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. The throttle body in his engine failed. When minimal pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal it failed to move and suddenly it rapidly accelerated without warning. Part# 5f9z9e926b has been on back order since November 2009 which has made it impossible to drive his vehicle for over a month. The manufacturer also stated that since there was no warranty he would be responsible for the repair cost. The failure mileage was 24,812.
