My Ford Five Hundred has been unexpectedly surging when releasing the break pedal when going forward and reverse. It has almost caused me to hit other vehicles in a parking lot on several occasions and makes it extremely difficult to control the speed of the vehicle when starting to accelerate. Something needs to be done about this issue. I am not the only person who is experiencing this. There are many more people who have posted the same issue on blogs and websites I have read. Please look into this issue.
I had the car in the shop three times prior to the extended warranty expiring. All three times they said that they could not find the problem (which eventually was the throttle body assembly). Three days ago, on the freeway, the car was "lunging forward" going between a complete stop to 15 mph in stop and go traffic. The car died on me and I needed to push it off the freeway. Eventually the car restarted and I drove it to the nearest repair yard.
Vehicle surges forward or backward when put into gear . The occurrence is intermittent , but dangerous.
I had just bought a 2006 Ford Five Hundred with about 131000 miles. Drove great from the dealership then later that afternoon the throttle all of a sudden went dead. I was going 65 mph on the highway and had no throttle. I went online and researched the car and there have been numerous (upwards of 100+) people who have the same complaint. I just wish Ford would recall the part so it's not going to cost me an arm and a leg to fix.
This car has lunged forward and backward almost causing several accidents. Dealership say they don't know what is causing it. Warranty is worthless. Air conditioner went out when temp's were over 105 degrees. Over $1000 to repair.
I have a 2007 Ford Five Hundred which constantly accelerates unintentionally. It also has begun to loose acceleration and lunges every time I press the gas peddle which almost caused an accident on the interstate.
Dear sirs: my 2006 Ford 500 has a very dangerous defect that has been happening for over a year. I have complained about it several times to the Ford dealer, but the car won't mess up when the dealer checks it out. Today my wife started the car, placed her foot on the brake & shifted the car into reverse. Before she had time to remove her foot from the brake pedal, the engine sped up & the car tried to move backward. It's a good thing she had her foot on the brake. The exact same thing has happened before in forward gear. I was in the car beside her & I witnessed her foot on the brake when the car tried,on it's own to take off. It's a scary situation & I need some help to resolve the problem.
2006 Ford Five Hundred limiited lunges forward when brake is applied.
On 7/27/11 car lunged forward and accelerated bast normal driving speed. Car has been doing this (lunging) since I purchased the vehicle back in 2008, but has been accelerating on its own for the past 2 months. I have had the car looked at by a mechanic and it was diagnosed with a throttle body defect.
I have the wrench light up on the dash board and it said engine failsafe mode in the message centre? this started happening to me a few weeks ago from time to time. No warning, I just accelerate from a red light and I notice I have no power, I look down and sure enough - wrench is lit and engine failsafe mode. I pull over, turn the car off for a few minutes and then the problem is gone when I start again. I couldnt find any specific info on what is causing this around the 'net - and even the manual says, if it is persists, take it to the dealer. It happened a few more times, but this time it seemed the rpm's were revving without my foot on the accelerator. I had my foot on the brake so nothing happened, but did it a few times, so I brought it to the dealer last week. They ran some diagnostics and ultimately said they repaired a vacuum hose at my airbox. Ok, sure, whatever. Next two days, no problem. The third day, happened again. This time, I was going into an underground parking spot and it started revving and I ended up (very lightly) hitting the wall as it lurched forward. When I went to leave the spot - in reverse - happened again - almost hit the parked car behind, as it lurched. So took it to the dealer this morning - and the service advisor mentioned he suspects the throttlebody as he has had some other 500's in for the same thing. No idea why, but the computer didnt have a code for the throttlebody problem last time - but it did this time, so as I write this, they are putting the new one on and I'll be there in an hour to pick it up.
The vehicle lunges forward on its own power. The gas pedal is not pressed and it is not obstructed by any foreign or manufactured object. This has resulted in many near crashes.
The Ford Five Hundred's engine shuts off as you turn the wheel, that's how it started out. A few days later, the car's engine would shut off just driving straight down the road. After the engine shuts off the steering wheel will lock up and not move. I was lucky enough to be able to pull over and turn the key to off position. After turning key to off position, I turned the car back on and it drove fine until I either turned a corner or it just shut off as I went straight. After speaking with our local Ford dealer we were told that they have had quite a few Ford Five Hundred owners come in with the same problem. This car is only four years old and 84,000 (plus) miles on it. This car shouldn't be acting like that. It will cost $800+ to get it fixed, if what they do will fix it. With all those other complaints coming into the dealership, I wonder how many others' in the us are having the same problem. The issue needs to be fixed. Thanks.
Throttle body bad all most had wreck car would not go just idled.
While putting the Ford Five Hundred in reverse the car briefly accelerated and lunged backwards barley missing another car. Thinking I might had hit the accelerator I went on to where I was headed. As I was leaving my destination once again the car just took off while in reverse. The car then gave a wrench fault on the console. I looked up the issue in the manual and it said it was a throttle control issue. I spoke with the dealer today and they said it was a throttle body problem. Upon investigation I find that this is a recurring issue. If someone had been within 3 to 5 feet of my auto I would have hit them.
Failsafe engine light went on, I pulled over and car began acceleration on it's own while in stop position. . .
Engine surges when parking, when backing slowly with foot on brake pedal,.
05 Ford Five Hundred, awd malfunction lights stayed on, speed fluctuation upward rapidly when take off causing very unsafe driving.
My 2006 Ford Five Hundred will suddenly lunge forward then sputter and die. It will also do this when backing out of parking spots. There is a breif "wrench" dash light that comes on. This has happened while sitting at red lights and could be deadly. Code says failed throttle body. Why no part recall? widespread problems have been reported on the web and apparently the same part is still being used. Please look into this before lives are lost.
Vehicle will intermittently stall when accelerating from a stop. The vehicle has stalled numerous times in the middle of executing a turn, leaving the vehicle and occupants in a dangerous situation. A Ford dealership diagnosed the problem as being the throttle body, however, after replacing the very expensive throttle body, the problem persists. A non-Ford mechanic is now saying it is more likely loose wiring and is working to diagnose the exact wiring issue causing the problem. There seem to be many people online with the same stalling issue. In addition to the stalling, the vehicle has also been surging sporadically. It surges forward (or backward) without the accelerator being pressed. It appears that my vehicle is not the only one affected by this problem. Ford needs to be held accountable for the precarious position they are putting vehicle owners in.
The Ford Five Hundred I own has surges of acceleration when I am inching my way into a parking spot or forward loser to a wall or another car. I have to quickly slam on my brakes to avoid hitting something. I fear at some point it may be a person. The problem has been going on for a while but I was never able to reproduce it for a mechanic. I have made a connection to hot weather and the car's air conditioning being on. I fear this is not safe.
Air conditioner has gone out at 27,465 miles, warranty has expired and they tell me it will cost 1700. 00 dollars to fix! not fixed at this point, will be talking to Ford dealership about this one.
A/c compressor in 2007 Ford Five Hundred went out with approx 91,000 miles.
I have a 2007 Ford 500 that started surging forward and backward. I took the car and my extended warranty to a Ford dealership only to learn that the dealer that I bought the car from had back-dated my warranty to the time the car was put in service. (I had purchased the car as a "program" car. ) my warranty had run out according to them 6 days before I took it to the dealership. I wrote a letter to Ford and they refused to honor it even though I thought I had purchased a 5 year, 100,000 mile warranty. The car is still surging forward and backward and Ford refuses to do anything. I will never purchase another Ford product. I have owned lincolns and Fords all of my life and I will never get another one. I cannot believe Ford refuses to take care of their customers. This is obviously a safety hazard that Ford needs to repair. Seeing all of the complaints that people have sent in, Ford knows that they are in the wrong and still they do nothing.
No injuries. . . Yet. However, our 2006 Ford Five Hundred accelerates for no apparent reason at all. It does it when going forward or reverse and will stop by either tapping the accelerator pedal or turning off the car and restarting it. I will be bringing the car in for service this week, but just want to bring this problem to your attention as it seems other individuals have reported the same situation.
Ac air blows cold when you are doing 60 mph on the highway. . . Around town it is hot!!! dealer recharged the system, but still have the same problem. Now being told it is the compressor. So many people are having the same problem with the a/c in Ford Five Hundreds. This really needs to be looked into please!.
The air condition in this car stopped working; only hot air was blowing out. After taking it to a mechanic, I was told it was due to a leaking air compressor. I was told multiple Ford Five Hundred's have been taken in for the same problem. My husband also drives a 2007 Ford fusion and is having the exact same issue with his vehicle. I called several mechanic's and dealerships to try and get a price comparison for this issue and all of them told me the same thing - this issue has been happening with so many 2007 Ford vehicles. . . I think this deserves some research. The compressor should not go out in a car at 72,000 miles.
Air conditioning compressor leaking refrigerate oil, not possible to repair, replace compressor. 2005 Ford Five Hundred 90,000 miles.
The car lunges in drive and reverse without accelerating. The is danergeous as when backing out of garages or parking places. Trying to take off slowing is not possible.
I just bought my 2007 Ford Five Hundred 3 weeks ago and I was driving and all of a sudden the rpm starting going up really high the throttle light(wrench) came on and my car started slowing down. I pulled over, just avoided getting smashed in the rear from a truck and my car stopped moving. I cut the car off then tried to crank it back up at first it didn't start then it cranked 2nd time but then the check engine light was on and stayed on. I took it to a mechanic he said something about a throttle code he said he wanted to give it a second chance. He reset the codes and all lights were off. Well, about 2 days later while driving to work the same thing happened which he said shouldn't happen anymore. I called he said something about Ford having to order the part and fix the car. I went on several online forums and found that many other Ford 500 hundred customers were/are having the same problem and when they tried to get it fixed it only re-appeared again later. Something is not right with this. This should be a recall. . Sincerely, very very unsatisfied first time Ford customer. . . . . . .
Not long after purchasing my vehicle my husband and I were driving on the interstate with the cruise control on and the transmission stopped working. We were able to pull off safely onto the shoulder and shut the car off and once restarted was fine. We have since stopped using cruise control in fear of an accident. The problem is still there and seems to be getting worse. The dash will light check transmission, traction control and sometimes check engine. Once the car is turned off and back on it is fine for a while, the check engine light takes some time to go off. It is getting so we are afraid to drive it, sometimes it drives fine and others the transmission quits. The other day I went to pass a car and the lights came on as I had moved into the lane to pass on the interstate. Once I was in my lane again a few minutes later it does it again and this time a big mac truck is coming up on me. I have read of several problems of this with this same car and it has been said there is a problem with the throttle body and/or electrical system. This is very dangerous and Ford should be issuing a recall to fix the problem before someone is injured or killed.
The vehicle lunges when shift lever is moved from park to drive or reverse upon starting. It does not happen everytime, but when it does happen, it is a marked move, enough to go thru a garage, jump a curb or hit a passerby. It seems to happen more often when the car is started, and then waiting a few seconds before moving the shift (time to put on seat belt). Put your foot on brake, shift to gear and wonder if it will jump or not. It became noticable at about 65,000 miles and has become worse. The car has about 76,000 miles on it now. It seems other Ford 500 owners are experience similar problems. I would hope Ford does something to rectify this issue.
Air conditioning unit started making noises last year (approx. August). Took it to the dealership and they told me the compressor was going. They also said there are so many problems with that compressor that they would not be able to get one until February.
Defective electronic throttle body (etb) on 2005 Ford 500, freestyle, and Mercury montego. Causes car to move forward or backward in drive or reverse without using any pressure on the gas pedal. Must place foot on the brake to avoid running into something, especially while parking. Ford has a technical service bulletin (TSB 05-25-13) on this but has not notified any owners of vehicles affected to date. It appears that Ford has come up with a new replacement part for the etb unlike the original that was just made available in July 2010. I paid a local Ford dealer $128. 08 to have this problem diagnosed and another $615. 83 to have it fixed. I was told the etb part number was "5f9z-9e926-aa". Another number for the new etb part on my sales slip dated 07/30/10 was fmc 6f9z 9e926 a. They called it a kit for the electronic throttle body. The price for the kit was $495. 86. Since I have heard of this problem coming up on more than one occasion, I thought I would turn it in for your investigation. Since the affect of the defective etb actually can cause the car to move on its own, forward or reverse, and requires you to use your brakes simultaneously to keep it from hitting adjoining objects, I thought this is a safety hazard that should be addressed on several Ford and Mercury 2005 products, it is not the money, it is the safety issue I am most interested in. To parallel park or get into a parking stall with this problem was a real chore keeping you foot on the brake as you tried to maneuver in and out of a parking space. If you did not hold your foot on the brake, the car would move in its own either in drive or reverse. This is not acceptable and a true safety hazard, but I have not seen the problem on the recall lists for my car or others affected in the Ford TSB. Nor have auto owners been notified by Ford or offered compensation for the expense to have the kit installed.
As I was backing out of a parking space in a parking garage the enigine reved up and jumped hitting a beam in the garage. Upon impact the engine was still reved so I immediately turned the engine off and back on. The engine continued to rev up and the check engine and yellow wrench illuminated. The car was towed to a dealership in which they replaced the throttle body and the car was driven to a local body shop for repairs. Total cost over $1200 yesterday, September 7, 2011, (mileage 108000 and speed from 0-40 mph) as I was driving to work the check engine light came on. Each time I would stop the engine would rev and when I would accelerate it would jump and rev. Not wanting a repeat of the last accident, I took it to a mechanic near work who stated that the throttle body needed to be replaced again along with the engine mount. Total cost $1076 after resaerching this problem it seems that it is a typical issue with this type of vehicle. Most have included that they are fearful that they will be injured or injure someone else in a accident.
As I was parking in a parking garage, the car surged forward. It happened occasionally over the next year, but during the past year it became more frequent and pronounced. I would need to put it in park at red lights to insure I did not lurch forward into the car in front of me. We took it to a Ford dealership and for almost $900 they replaced the throttle control. The problem still exists, but not as pronounced or frequent. However new symptoms appeared including intermittently dimming dashboard lights and the air conditioner began to surge up and down almost as if it were gasping for air. This lunging forward when your foot is on the brake or you are at a minimal speed could be dangerous.
I purchased a used 2005 Ford 500 ltd awd in may 2008. I was told it was a lease turn in. The mileage was very low, under 30,000 miles. The factory warranty expired in July 2008. In October 2008, my dash began malfunctioning. The guages would go completley dead. I could not tell how fast I was going, how much gas I had left or the temperature of the engine. Nothing on my dash would work. It varied from lasting seconds to appx a half an hour. I drove home one night (it took me appx 25 minutes) not knowing how fast I was going or how much gas I had left. Also, the reverse lights were on when my car was in both drive and park. I stopped at a red light (my car was in drive) and the reverse sensor alarm went off when a car pulled up behind me. We took it to the dealership we bought it from & were told it was a cluster in the dash that was a "known problem with this vehicle" but because it was not a "safety issue" Ford did not have to recall this. I feel that not being able to know what speed you are driving down the highway to be a huge safety issue. Also having your reverse lights on while the car is in park or drive seems a bit dangerous as well. We had it repaired and it cost us over 400. 00. About 2 weeks ago, we had to have another "cluster" repaired that was making my transmission shake & the check engine light as well another warning light appear. It was a sensor that went bad and was making my car think it was out of gas. This cost us almost 350. 00 to repair. Not sure what's going on with the sensors/clusters on these cars but it seems to be a safety issue to me.
I just read a report that you were investigating cases of unexpected lunging in 2005-2007 Ford freestyle wagons. I own a 2005 Ford Five Hundred and I have had that same situation happen to me on random occasions. I have entered a randomly chosen date below because this has happened only a few times over the last six years.
My Ford 500, 2006 is year is having surging problems and somehow it happens too when a/c is on. . . . Light on dashboard is on too. Very dangerous.
Problem with the emergency fuel shut off switch location in the 2006 Ford Five Hundred. My passenger in the car ( front passenger seat side) unknowingly tapped or bumped the switch which caused the cars engine to loose power and then completely stall. Dealer ( sunrise Ford in north hollywood told me today it was this switch that was activated which caused the stalling of my engine. My passenger ( adult male- 6'2" large shoe size) was working with me in the san fernando valley of los angeles county on 6/28/06. Apparently his foot bumped this switch which has got to be in an improper location ( not concealed).
Purchased 2005 Ford 500 new on oct 11, 2005. At first oil change 3000 miles on Jan 10, 2006 I reported vibration and popping on right front of car. They replaced upper strut mounts/bearings. Vibration continued. On March 7, 2006 a tire specialist stated tires were showing light chopping on the outer edges and the right front tire had it. March 8, 2006 returned to dealership reported the vibration again-nothing done. Tires checked. May 30, 2006 reported vibration. Did road force balance . Vibration continued. Aug 8, 2006 told the mgr about the vibration again. Week of oct 9 the mgr said nothing more could be done. Mgr said his service rep would not be back for 2-3 months. I asked the manager if I could contact his service rep and he said no. Oct 19, 2006 called bill mccort, took car to the garage again. Test drove with bill mccort, joe essex, tech, my husband, and myself. Tech confirmed the vibration. Car left at dealership. . Scott vasko, asst. Service mgr. Called and told us all readings were within specs. Said they did four hook-ups for testing. Still vibrating. Oct 19, 2006 bill mccort authorized the continental tires be replaced by new michelin tires. Still vibrating after new tires were put on. Oct 20, 2006 met phyllis stoves and, owner of dealership. She drove my car and felt vibration. Oct 21, 2006 stoves and, my husband , and myself drove two 2007 Ford Five Hundreds. They had the same vibration. Stoves said she would e-mail an engineer and will contact us week after next stoves called me and asked me to bring the car to the dealership because an engineer was coming to look at my car. I was not allowed to see or talk to the engineer. Stoves said customers are not allowed to meet with or talk to the engineer. Later stoves called and told me she and the engineer drove my car and it drove wonderfully. Vibration continues. I once again reported Jan 4, 2007.
