36 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 02/02/2013

Vehicle surges for no particular reason and shows. A check engine light on (wrench). Control of acceleration is mixed and vehicle either lurches or feels as though transmission is in neutral and rpm's increase without acceleration by driver. Have a scheduled service call with Ford and have been issued a notice from Ford that this issue will be covered.

37 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 10/22/2012

In August 2010, I had the continuously variable transmission replaced at ~98,000 miles. Luckily, it was under warranty. Now in October 2012, the second transmission as the service member said at the Ford dealership "the transmission exploded, we're not even sure how you were able to drive this vehicle. This was at ~146,000 miles, but there is only ~48,000 miles on the transmission itself. Two transmissions have failed in this vehicle. Searching the internet I have come across several instances of the Ford Five Hundreds continuously variable transmission failing. I called the Ford care line to report it, but they claim they are unaware of any issues. My concern is this third transmission will also fail at some point.

38 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 10/13/2012

My car surges. It is mostly at idle speed. It's dangerous. I was at a drive through and a janitor was sweeping. My car surged and I literally stood on the breaks to prevent running over him. At the drive through it surged forward and I had to stand on the breaks to prevent it from ramming into the car ahead. It occurs more when air conditioning is running but will occur without ac on. I the local dealer replaced the throttle body recently but it still surges. It occurs when pulling to a stop at the lights or at the drive through as you slowly move forward. It happens when pulling into a parking spot or when backing up. I've seen news about the problem with the Ford escape. My Ford 500 is also affected and weighs a whole lot more. If this thing surges forward it could do some serious damage.

39 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 09/05/2012

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnose that the throttle body sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 138,000. Pmb.

40 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

Out side air temp was approx 96 degrees so ac was on . While shifting into reverse the vehicle lunged so hard it was uncontrollable, and unstoppable, if some one had stepped out behind me they would have died as I could only stop reward movement by shifting into drive. This occurred three times trying to get out of a parking space at a crowded mall. The vehicle then stalled. The lunging was so fast the brakes could hardly hold the car from moving in reverse. In checking there is a service bulletin TSB-05-25-13 from Ford motor company on this very issue but no recall, also many incidents/accidents recorded in this regard. If I was not prepared enough during this incident in a crowded parking lot some one would have died, this must be addressed b-4 someone is run over. Currently Ford has no comment. Please contact me for further details.

41 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/05/2012

Car surges on its own, after putting it into gear.

42 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/12/2012

The vehicle has unintended acceleration issues. There was an investigation by the nhsta but nothing came of it. The car still accelerates on its own when I pull into parking spaces or leaving parking spaces. I have to keep my foot on or by the brake pedal as to not hit other cars or people. Having the air conditioning on seems to worsen this problem substantially. It is completely random and I know I'm not the only person that has experienced this issue. Please reopen your investigation and make sure you have both the ac on and off. It's mainly when it is on, but still completely random. I don't know how people and property haven't been injured or damaged as a direct result of this well known issue.

43 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/12/2012

My 2007 Ford Five Hundred sel fwd with the 3. 0 v-6 (81,421 miles) and 6 speed automatic transmission will intermittently surge forward or backwards without gas pedal application when idling in gear. It is as if I floored in a jackrabbit start. It does not do this every time that the car goes to idle in drive or reverse (for example, if I am in traffic at a stoplight) but it will do this at least once every time I drive. I have had to keep my right foot firmly on the brake pedal while backing or in a parking lot to keep the car from hitting pedestrians, other cars, sign poles in parking lots and my carport's wall. It will suddenly rev up when in either drive or reverse without my foot on the gas pedal and try to move in an uncontrolled manner. It may only do it once or it may do it three or four times in just as many seconds. I was unaware of this problem and nearly hit another car the first time this happened. There was no warning. No check engine light activated. My car is equipped with a tachometer, I have seen it jump as high as 2000 rpm from a 750 rpm idle and then fall right back to 750. The fact that I have not hit anyone yet is proof that this is not a pedal misapplication error, but my concern is that an inexperienced driver or someone who is unaware of this defect will be surprised by it and kill or injure themselves or someone else. This is the first time I have ever owned a vehicle with such a problem I took my car to my local Ford dealer and was told that the problem is a defective throttle body which is being replaced tomorrow. I researched this problem on the internet and have found reports that the replacement part is no better than the original. The fact that a defective part can cause a vehicle to act in such a dangerous manner is symptomatic of a factory defect and should be acted upon by the NHTSA as soon as possible.

44 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/07/2012

Two problems: 1. Car surges sporadically (I. E. When pulling into parking space with foot on brake, car surges as if pressing the accelerator). 2. While driving all lights on dash go out, speedometer and tachometer go to zero. I had the throttle body replaced once (several months later, Ford reimbursed me for the cost under customer satisfaction program 12n03. This solved the problem for several months. The problem is now re-occurring. Ford has indicated that they will not repair the car again. This seems to be a safety issue.

45 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/05/2012

When back up the car accelerates like you are on the gas but the gas pedal is not touch. When the car comes to a stop and the foot is on the brake, once you take the foot off the brake the car accelerates without warning. This has happen if stop at a light, backing out or even while in park the car will just accelerate without warning! my daughter almost hit a couple of people walking in the cross walk and all she did was release the brake to move up after a car turn and accelerated without warning. I have had the car accelerate after just being stop at a light or moving at slow speed without touching the gas, but it does not happen all the time. Last oil change at Ford dealership there was nothing wrong with transmission fluid and there were no leaks. . . . . .

46 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/02/2012

My Ford Five Hundred has been unexpectedly surging when releasing the break pedal when going forward and reverse. It has almost caused me to hit other vehicles in a parking lot on several occasions and makes it extremely difficult to control the speed of the vehicle when starting to accelerate. Something needs to be done about this issue. I am not the only person who is experiencing this. There are many more people who have posted the same issue on blogs and websites I have read. Please look into this issue.

47 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 05/15/2012

2006 Ford 500. The car will suddenly surge at idle. . . It also surges during gear shifts from park to drive and park to reverse. If you do not have your foot firmly on the brake pedal the car will suddenly surge forward. This can lead to damage of the vehicle or injury to a pedestrian. Arfc website has 125 reports of this problem. Seems to get worse around the 60-65,000 mile range. . . . Conveniently out of warranty. Taking car to dealer today for evaluation and repair.

48 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 05/10/2012

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Ford Five Hundred. While parked, the contact smelled an extremely strong fuel odor outside of the vehicle. There was no fuel visible on the ground. The failure recurred sporadically. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 11v355000 (fuel system, gasoline). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000. Js.

49 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated as then vehicle decelerated independently. The contact was unable to increase speed and eventually, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the throttle body would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The failure and current mileage was 62,000. Kmj.

50 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

I would be stopped at a stop sign or red light and would push on the throttle to accelerate. The guy would not move at first then would "jump" and accelerate quickly. I never hit anyone because I was careful, but I took it into a Ford dealership to have them diagnose it. They claimed to know of the problem but would not cover it under warranty. I paid over $1,000 to have them replace my "throttle body. ".

51 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

The car had begun surging hard both in reverse and forward. It happens when stopping and when first putting it in gear. I've been fortunate to have not hit anything yet, but I am fearful that it might happen. I'm seeing a lot of other people having the exact same problem in several forums and websites. I do not understand why a recall has not been issued for this problem as it is obviously a serious manufacturer's defect.

52 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/20/2011

My 2006 Ford Five Hundred accelerates uncontrollably. When the car is shifted into gear it accelerates without throtteling. It happens from park-to-any gear and sometimes when at traffic stops. I've noticed this problem for a while, but it is getting progressively worse. Scary!!!.

53 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

While pulling into a parking space and my foot off the accelerator, the car will suddenly surge forward. It seems to happen more frequently when the weather is hot. While shopping today in 90+ temperatures today, the car accelerated on more than three occasions as I pulled into parking spaces. The car has accelerated on at least two occasions when I have stopped for pedestrians. Fortunately, I had my foot on the brake. Today, I came very close to crashing through my garage cabinets when the engine surged as I pulled into the garage and was inching forward to clear the garage door.

54 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

I have a 2006 Ford Five Hundred, and it has recently the engine accelerates the vehicle during low speeds in forward and reverse, while approaching an intersection with foot on brake. This has happens continuously. I am not sure what to do. . Read more...

55 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 03/09/2011

Purchased a 2006 Ford Five Hundred and noticed that when I would put the car in drive or reverse it would lurch forward or backward quite excessively. Called the deler and took the car in and was told that the throttle body might be gummed up and that the battery also failed and could cause that problem due to resetting everytime the car starts. They cleaned the throttle body plates and replaced the battery and that same night the vehicle did the same thing when I put the car in reverse.

56 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

I was driving down the freeway and my car just stopped the second time I was driving down the street and the car stop the speed limit was 50 I was turning onto state hwy 6 and the car died I almost got hit these problem happened for quite some time and very often I called Ford and they said there was nothing they could do because there was no recall after searching online I found out hundreds of people were having the same problem with the Ford Five Hundreds and freestyle's.

57 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 10/04/2010

2005 Ford 500 suddenly shows wrench and cel in dash and car loses power while driving on the highway, almost resulting in a rear end collision.

58 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 08/17/2010

Ford needs to have a recall regarding the Five Hundreds lunging when put in reverse and sometimes when put into drive. Mine started this about a year ago and I don't have to put my foot on the gas to go in reverse. Even when parked downhill! my husband and I know you must keep your foot on the brake anytime you take the car out of gear. It's very scary and we will not let anyone drive the car for fear of an accident. Please look into this!.

59 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/27/2010

My 2006 Ford 500 lunges intermittently when shifting from park to drive or reverse. The car was taken to a repair shop who could not reproduce the lunging and said nothing appeared wrong. Since it only occurs intermittently, it is difficult to even get it fixed. It appears many other Ford 500's are having the same problem.

60 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/04/2010

Before July 2010 I began noticing that my engine would race up to 1500 rpm while idling. I would always keep my foot on the brake so the car would not lurch forward. Then on the 4th of July multiple engine errors appeared on the car computer. The Ford dealer diagnosed a throttle body malfunction. After replacement no problem until June 2012. Once again the engine is racing to 2000 rpm while idling at a stop. I am sure that this problem is ongoing with some Ford products and will some day or has caused an accident. It is not a constant rpm rate but the rpm goes from 700 to 2000.

61 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

Throttle body failure on 2005 Ford Five Hundred. First identified in August 2009. I had to wait 6 months for replacement part which failed after installation. Second replacement part has been installed but doubt if it will solve problem. Total cost to date over $1000. Faulty design which Ford should held responsible.

62 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 08/21/2009

Car stalled while accelerating from dead stop or increasing speed to merge onto free. Received error message, "engine failsafe mode". First two times was able to turn off car and restart but third time was unable to restart and was stuck on freeway. Problem occurred three times in under 30 days. Dealer ran diagnostic and found that it was an electronic throttle problem but was unable to locate part from any local dealer. Part was on back order and not expected in for another 16 weeks and was told that problem could occur again until part was replaced. I wonder why there is no recall if there are enough cars having this same problem to cause a backlog of 16+ weeks.

63 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 05/02/2009

I was driving through a parking lot and was pulling into a space to park. I did not have my foot on the accelerator, as I was just easing to a stop. The engine surged and my car lunged forward, almost hitting the vehicle parked in front of me. This has happened multiple times since, at one time almost hitting a pedestrian. I have to keep my foot on the break constantly and hope I can get the car stopped before someone or something is hit, and pray I don't have to use the accelerator at the low levels of speed.

64 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 04/07/2007

Rough acceleration from stop for years. After 218,000 miles engine shuts off reporting engine fail-safe mode. Will restart after sitting on side of road for couple, 5-minutes. Dealer states bad throttle body - $900. 00 repair. Apparently a common problem.
