1 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2020

The transmission started to hesitate shifting then wouldnt go past third shift and then completely stopped working while driving on the road.

2 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently suddenly go into neutral at various speeds. The contact stated they would have to wait till they are able to shift the gear into the right position in order to continue to drive the vehicle. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealership. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that their vehicle's failure related to NHTSA campaign number: 04v176000 (power train) however, their vehicle's VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000. Gl.

3 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2019

The contact owns a 2009 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start-up after multiple attempts without warning. The contact initially took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and the ignition switch and housing were replaced. A few months later, the failure recurred, and the contact took the vehicle back to the same mechanic and had the starter replaced. A few months later after the repair, the failure recurred, and the contact took the vehicle to another independent mechanic who replaced the ignition switch and housing for a second time. After the failure occurred for the fourth time, the initial independent mechanic instructed her to place the vehicle in neutral to see if the restarted. The vehicle was started in neutral and the mechanic replaced the neutral safety switch. Despite the repair, the failure recurred. A dealer was notified of the failure and a representative acknowledged that the failure was a known issue; however, there were no recall for the failure. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and the contact was provided the same information as the dealer. The manufacturer was then referred to the NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.

4 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2018

I had just got in my car to go grocery and I started up my engine and shifted into drive. However, I was going up to 5000 rpms just to go 30mph and it didn't feel right when I was driving, so I pulled over and stopped the car. When I did this, I noticed that the car was only functional in drive. I wouldn't allow me to reverse and the wheels were locked in neutral. So, I called for my parents for help. We knew there was something wrong with the transmission, so we used a code reader to see if the car was giving an error message but it didn't have one and put in new transmission fluid. After looking online, we noticed that the Ford Focuses from 2010-2015 were also have transmission issues. So we had it towed to a Ford dealer and service center location. We told them the issues we were have and paid for diagnostics but they do anything different from what we had done. I was told my year was not one of the recalled ones, so I would have to pay about 5,00 to replace it. However, I told them that it had less than 50,000 miles and a transmission should at least be able to last until 50,000 but they said they couldn't help me and I would have to pay full price.

5 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2017

Check engine and wrench light flashed while driving 70 mph in interstate and suddenly lost some power. This issue came up without any other symptoms. My mechanic unable to find the issue and resolve the code error. Later on I find out all the Ford Focus having the similar problem and Ford did not recall for this issue.

6 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2016

Driving on highway in rush hour traffic at 65 miles an hour when suddenly losing throttle control down to 35 miles an hour the gas pedal would not respond. Yellow wrench light and wavy car warning lights appeared. Coasted to side of the road and sat for 10 minutes. Started car and tested pedal. Eased back on freeway. Scared to drive this car.

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2016

The throttle control light has begun going off ( twice now) but once turned off and turned back on it does not come on. When it comes on it looses power and there are issues with acceleration. It has only done it after a long drive and going (moving) at a normal pace of about 45 to 55 miles and hour. It has not gone off at a time that allows it to be diagnosed by a professional and they have not been able to get it to register when hooked to the computer,. The light is no longer on and does not not illuminate in around town driving.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2016

Driving at 45 mph suddenly lost acceleration, wrench light illuminated. The car continued to run but extremely scary. Then you regained acceleration and continued only to lose it repeatedly. Took car to have diagnostics run, but the light went off and they could not diagnose a problem.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2015

The car had been running perfect then after a motor mount was replaced the car started then went dead immediately. The car will turn over but it isn't firing right now it gave no warning. The computer read a throttle actuator trouble code and that's all. The car will keep turning over after I release the key it has not done this before now we had some trouble with the ignition locking up and we have to turn it really hard to start get the key in the starting position. The ignition system is one of the problems and the throttle body will update when I find out more.

10 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2015

I had $2765 worth of transmission repair on a 2009 Ford Focus transmission with 81,000 miles on it. The car was properly serviced. I purchased a piece of junk.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2015

On cold start rpm's fluctuate several hundred rpm's. Brought to dealership but no codes were present. Tech suspected dirty throttle body. Part not under warranty because no codes when scanned. Problem continues especially on cold start but occasionally while in drive at a stop.

12 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2015

I was driving approximately 60 mph on the highway (in the far left lane) with cruise control on when my car suddenly appeared to die and the wrench light came on. The car began to decelerate and would not accelerate regardless of how hard I pressed down on the gas pedal. I then had to Dodge traffic as I attempted to pull off to the right side of the road (across two lanes during traffic) while my car continued to decelerate. This, at first, happened rarely, but now occurs 2-3 times every time I drive as much as 15 miles. I have read countless forums about others with the same car having the exact same problems, and yet Ford is doing absolutely nothing about it. This can be an extremely terrifying and potentially dangerous in the right circumstances. Far too many people are having throttle body/actuator problems for this not to be a design flaw on Ford's part, and, from what I've heard, they're refusing to honor others' warranties. I just so happen to be just outside my warranty; what a "coincidence. " I'm now looking at a $600 out of pocket repair I simply can't afford at this time. So instead I'm forced to continually look forward to having my car suddenly die in the middle of highway traffic.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2014

While starting to drive out of the driveway and down the neighborhood street, the vehicle began to stall, the "wrench" light came on the instrument panel, and the vehicle had to be immediately returned home. Restarting the vehicle later in the day, the issue was gone. The issue happened again in the driveway after starting the vehicle. A call was made to the nearest dealership to schedule a repair. The issue happened again, while attempting to drive the vehicle to the dealer for repair. Three separate times the vehicle had to be shifted in neutral to restart the car during a three mile drive.

14 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2014

As I was traveling down the highway the throttle suddenly and unexpectedly stopped working. (thankfully I was not in heavy traffic at the time. ) I coasted the car over to the side of the highway. The car remained idling, however I still had no throttle control. The wrench light was on. I turned the car off, waited a few minutes and restarted the car. The wrench light was off and I once again had throttle control. I eased the car back onto the highway but noticed the car had difficulty holding a constant and steady speed. There were intermittent subtle surges and pauses in the speed. Once I reached my destination I had a Ford dealership run a diagnostics on the car and they could not find any codes or problems with the car. I thoroughly researched this issue and found others were having similar problems and it was related to the throttle sensor. I had contacted a number of national parts suppliers and they could not sell me just the sensor but would have to sell me the entire throttle body. I contacted the Ford dealer and they had a throttle position sensor. Since replacing the throttle sensor I have put over 1200 miles on the vehicle and have had to this point no more problems with throttle control.

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2013

While transitioning from one road to another, the vehicle suddenly lost power. When trying to accelerate, the vehicle reached approximately 5000 rpms and did not reach a speed above 20mph. This continued to occur at each stopping point. The engine would then "kick" and normal driving capabilities would be restored briefly.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2013

While driving at a steady speed the car lost power, the tach dropped to 1,000 rpm. The yellow wrench light came on. Car started slowing down. Pressed accelerator and nothing happened. Car would not respond at all. Pulled off the road into a parking lot. Took car out of gear and the idle started to vary from 500 to 1500. Shut the car off. A few seconds later started it up and was able to drive home without incident. It has occurred on four more occasions since then. Most recently 2 weeks ago.

17 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2013

On the freeway going approx 45 mph in the pouring rain; changed lanes, braked a bit to 35. Happened as I sped back up, orange wrench appeared and car began to slow down to about 10 mph till I got to a service station directly off the freeway. Sat for about 8 min. Started up and drove home with no incident. Two days later happened again. This time inching along trying to change freeways. Got to emg lane and sat about five min. Started up and got home with no problem. Only 16 miles between home and work - all freeway.

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2013

Last year during the summer I would be driving and the engine and wrench lights would come on and I would lose power. Pressing the accelerator did nothing, no response. This has continued to happen occasionally but in the last couple of weeks it has been a daily thing and it happens numerous times each day. I live in virginia and it has not happened in the winter or early spring when the temps are cooler. I drive about 60 miles round trip and the majority of it is on the highway. This is a dangerous situation. I get to the side of the road and turn the car off, let it set for a minute or less and then start it again and it runs. I don't have to let it stay off for any amount of time, I can start it shortly after shutting it off with no problem. The tach jumps up between 2000-3000 rpms and then settles down. I don't have my foot on the gas when this happens. Sometimes it won't happen again for the rest of the trip but sometimes I drive only a couple miles before the situation repeats. When I'm parked with the car running I can watch the tach falter and drop below 1000 rpms but it catches itself and returns to normal. This is getting old and is nerve wracking while driving on the highway waiting for it to happen.

19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2013

Car went into limp home mode (wrench light) while pulling into traffic, sudden loss of power almost led to accident. My two year old was in the vehicle, with her side exposed to oncoming traffic when the car lost connection between the accelerator and throttle. Returned home immediately. Went out to start it later, no warning lights, ran fine. 2 days later, it went into limp home mode on the freeway, this time cel came on. Code p2135, indicating a problem with the throttle body. Part replaced, problem hasn't recurred. Research online indicates this is a known problem (there is a TSB). I would regard it as a safety issue based on the failure rates of widespread (albeit anecdotal) evidence. Though it isn't uncontrolled acceleration, it still is a loss of control; this system is drive-by-wire, the same as Toyota. I would think it should be given consideration for recall. 20 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2013

Was driving on cruise control on the interstate and moved to pass a semi-truck. I noticed that when pressing the accelerator, nothing would happen, no response. I then lost cruise control and the orange wrench light turned on. I was able to (thankfully and by the grace of god) pull back inbetween two semi-trucks and pull over to the shoulder. I turned the car off then back on again. I was able to drive to work the rest of the way at 75 mph. I was also able to return home 50 miles safely. Later that night I was driving across the neighborhood and the same problem happened again at 20 mph after just a block of driving. I took the car to the dealership and after 2 days they are 'unable to replicate the problem' and with no computer code or "proof" that the light turned on there is nothing they can do. With the high traffic volume on the interstate and the large number of semi's I hope I survive the next time this is bound to happen to me on my commute to work.

21 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

On October 1 2012 I was driving down my street at aprox 45 mph when the car suddenly lost power and would not accelerate. Luckily I was close to home and about to coast down hill to my driveway. When I pulled into my driveway the car was still running but not quietly, it sputter and was quite loud. I let it sit for a day and started it back up all light are off, however while driving (I live 50 miles, one way all highway driving at high speeds) to my place of employment this morning October 03 2012 I noticed at if I were driving at anything less then 60 where my foot wasn't on the gas I could feel what seem like the tran slip. . I hope my children are not in the car with me should this happen again. And im praying it doesnt!.

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2012

As I was driving on the freeway at 70 mph in the middle lane, the vehicle lost acceleration power and the "wrench" light came on. While the car was slowing, I had to make several lane changes across heavy, fast moving traffic before I was able to stop along the shoulder. Upon restarting the car, the light was no longer on and the car resumed normal acceleration. The vehicle is currently being assessed at the dealership, as this issue could result in a major collision if it were to recur, potentially causing the car to stall in high-speed traffic without the ability to get to the shoulder.

23 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2012

On a Saturday, may 5, 12 I was driving home after driving about 30 miles. We came on our st. Picture of a wrench came on. Car started to putt putt and finally made it into driveway. Turned off engine. Looked up in manual and said throttle control transmission. Call dealer immed. The only dealer opened w/in miles and aaa bought it there. Dealer checked computer stuff, unable to duplicate problem. No codes in modules. Person said suspect customer hit tcs button by accident. Employee told customer everything looked fine and I could take car home. I paid for 1/2 hr of work when there was supposedly an hr. Of checking done. However since nothing found I was only charged 1/2 hr. Picked car drove approximately 20+ miles home and it was fine. Sunday- drove approximately 40 miles without incident. Wrench came on and I pulled into parking lot. I turned engine off waited and turned engine on. I drove home without incident. If I was on a highway it would have caused an accident. I have a witness who was in the car with me both times.

24 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

I was driving my Ford Focus on the highway, running approx. 55 mph. All at once a wrench light came on in my car, and my car decelerated to approx. 10 mph. I pulled it off of the road shut the car off and restarted it, and the car ran fine the rest of the way home. Since then it has happened multiple times, without warning. I took the car to my Ford dealer shortly after the first occurance, and was told that since the wrench light wasnt on they couldnt tell me what the problem was. Yesterday, the car did it again, but this time the engine light came on and stayed on. I took it to advance to have the code read, and was told it coded out a (tac) throttle actuator control failure. I have several friends that also drive Focus' and they all tell me that theirs is doing the same thing. I was wondering if you could get Ford to recall this problem. I have also researched on the internet and found that they are also having this issue with the mustang, f-150, and f-250 to name a few. Thanks for your help.

25 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2011

This is the second time the car lost power and the wrench light came on. The first time the dealer replace a part on the motor. I do not think that Ford has any idea why this happens. My wife drives mostly on 4 lane roads,at high speeds, and sense this is not a one time problem, then Ford should take these cars off the road before some one gets kill,or is that what it takes for the something to be done, and done right and not I think it might be this part or that. I did not see any where Ford has fixed this problem, so they should remove said cars from the highway. The two times this happen to my wife it was light traffic and she could pull off the road, we purchase this car because of the long drive and the fuel mileage. If this happens in traffic will you know what the out come can be, at the speed they drive . Heaven help us if something is not done!.

26 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2010

I drive a 2009 Ford Focus. While driving down the highway I will have the wrench light come on. I take it to the dealer and they find nothing wrong. When the light comes on the car loses power. I turn the car off, wait about a minute and turn the car back on. At that time the fault clears and the car drives like normal. This typically happens when I've driven for about 25 to 40 miles. This has happened several times per day, and with the car being out of warranty due to miles, but under and extended warranty I'm having to pay to find nothing wrong. I know that something is wrong with the car though. It looks like others may have had the same problem as well.
