2 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2020

I just came across this website and wish I wrote this a year ago because I would have made a complaint then. I have had many issues with the lights flickering, coming on automatically when it rains, my interior lights staying on and actually catching fire because it had gotten so hot. My radio used to turn on by itself or not turn on at all, which has now been replaced. My van has literally died on me while driving more often at times when I'm making a turn or slightly moving my steering wheel. Has almost caused a few accidents because it shuts off without warning. My van will usually have a higher rpm when it's running in park or with foot on break(waiting at a red light). Then suddenly the rpms drop and fluctuate high and low and shut the engine off. My transmission is also starting to fail by not shifting properly. Usually into second gear. The indicator lamp light flashes with means error with the transmission. That is most likely due to the power train automatic transmission torque converter getting wet or it is powertrain automatic transmission. Also have issues with my my power steering the wheel knocks and sorta locks up at times , fluids have been checked and were perfect. I believe that it's associated with the steering hydraulic system failure.

9 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2018

I was pulling out of my driveway, and my 2004 Ford Freestar limited keeps acting like it's not catching the gears correctly to shift. When my brother drove it later the same day he said it sounds like the torque converter was messing up in the transmission. He is an auto mechanic. It has about 90,000 miles. I just bought this van earlier last yr around April 2017, is there still a recall on this? thanks bridget at 9793931598 or bfranciski@yahoo. Com.

11 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2017

While driving my 2004 Ford Freestar minivan, at approximately 45mph (miles per hour), the vehicle begins to shudder as if I am driving over rumble strips and when climbing slight or steap inclined hills the shidder worsens. I purchased the vehicle ised from a car lot. I have moticed that all of the Ford Freestar roums state that there is a recall on the torque converter. I looked up my vinfor recalls and it states that there are no recalls fornmy vehicle. I wonder if the original recall has already been taken care of by the previous owner and the replacement part is faulty as the ms. Azose v. Ford motor company class action lawsuit states it is. Any insight on this matter would be extremely helpful. Thanks.

14 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2017

Was driving on my way home on i85 and the car lost speed and rev up on rpm. Read codes an it has a torque converter code on it. I could have been injured because my car was not under a recall and I didn't get no noticed. That was the only vehicle I have and now I have no way to get around. It was a very busy interstate i85 when my car lost speed and revved up on rpm while I was in motion with big rigs behind me.

15 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2017

2004 Ford Freestar 2fmza58274bbxxxxx Ford is charging me for the repair for the torque converter subframe 3-4 $600~$800 bushing kits ($200 each) they want to charge me. I informed them that only do the factory recall repairs the pulled my van out and told me the cant do the repairs, because they are scared of the ball joints and tie rods might break, then complained about the subframe my have to be cut to install new subframe bolts bushings etc. Just to they can continue to take the apart to replace the torque converter. The agreed to charge me 300 labor and told me to pick up the parts needed so I purchased 2 tie-rods. 2 transaxles l-r, 2 lower control arms which included ball joints. They took the subframe apart then told me I need to pay and additional $500 for a used subframe from the salvage yard. Instead of Ford just preplacing the subframe 4 bushings and bolts kits $67. 00 at park Ford 400 west avenue tallmadge ohio 44278, they want to charge me I needed to get a new subframe bolts and that the subframe is not made anymore and 3-4 $600~$800 each. Then they want to charge me $300 extra labor for cutting the frame/ and welding it back shut to install washer(bolt anchors ) then reseal it, and to uninstall the old parts and install the new parts which they have to remove to perform the factory recall repairs. So this repair is going to cost me 392. 20 for parts 300 labor, 800 subframe bushings $1492. 2 if purchase elsewhere around $26 each I am a USA disable veteran studying form cisco ccna 200-105 exam and so I can better support my adult special need daughter sherry grimes ,I am ronald lee grimes Ford had my van Friday 24th 2017 its March 1st 2017 and they are searching for ways to charge me more money. While I have to walk to my destinations.

16 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2016

Driving at highway speeds, the engine remained at 2000 rpm but the mph continuously dropped to below 30 mph until vehicle was stopped on shoulder of highway. The torque converter was under recall and replaced previously. This is the same situation that occurred again. I believe the replacement torque converter was also defective.

17 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2016

When we bought this vehicle we loved it but it steadily went down hill. We got notification of recall about 6 months after purchase and tried several times to get into the dealer. Finally got it in March 2016 and now here I am paying on a vehicle that the torque converter went out on. Prior to repair the transmission would roughly shift and jerk/lurch into selected gear and at higher rates of speeds would shutter and trans light would come on. Now it doesn't respond to the gas pedal right away and then the engine shakes/shudders and the dipstick has a substance on it and when driving today it just coasted like in neutral! I have 4 children and this does not give me faith in Ford and it is my 3rd generation star van and my 6th Ford vehicle in general.

18 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2016

Torque converter output shaft failure the torque converter output shaft may fail, resulting in a sudden loss of motive power with no warning. Vehicle was in motion and just stopped working on city street.

19 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2016

Had the recall for the torque converter done and now my vehicle shakes, sputters. Won't accelerate, the rpms jump up high, very loud noises coming from underneath vehicle. Sometimes it will stall out. Can't go past 25-30 mph if it even gets up to that! my vehicle ran perfect before taking it into the Ford dealership and ever since I got it back we have had this problem. Took it back to Ford and they tried to say it was throttle cable so had that fixed and it still is doing the same things as it did after the torque converter was replaced. Can't drive the vehicle because when I go to accelerate it doesn't go or get up to the correct mph. The whole vehicle shakes really bad and the noises it makes are very loud and sound like something is going to blow up. I think the torque converter they replaced it with is bad and they need to fix this problem and man up and quit trying to blame it on other things. They messed up and need to fix it.

20 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2016

Problem #1 the passenger side window will not work . It's controll module was replaced it worked one time and stopped working again. Problem #2 the drive axle broke in traffic luckily we were stopping and were only going about 5 mph. Problem #3 today after a night of heavy rain when the van was unlocked the radio came on before the key was even in the ignition. Which brings us to problem #4 the biggest and no doubt most expensive. The van started and was running kind of sluggish but ran fine in reverse but if you shift to drive the van shuts off. You cannot start it in neutral either. I have had 2 independent mechanics look at it today both say it is the torque converter. I looked it up and there is a recall but of course it's the weekend and I can't call to see if it's covered.

21 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2016

Despite the recall of the torque converter and replacement of part, it failed again. The vehicle lost ability to use it after a soccer game. It started, but wouldn't drive before loosing all power. It woudn't go in reverse and had to be towed. This is the 2nd vehicle of the same model to do it that I owned. This could have led to an accident, since I was heading to the interstate with my children in the car. I am concerned the part should be replaced again due to either a faulty part or the way it works with other parts. This is a financial burden on people that own these vehicles.

22 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2016

Transmission get lost while driving Ford Freestar 2004 van; driving back from church, stop in traffic light the van could not start again, pushed to the nearest gas stations, towed to the dealer, was advised that since they cannot do any diagnosis without turning on the vehicle and knows what is wrong with the van, they need a new computer to reprogram the car. Paid $2500 for computer replacement and reprogramming(receipts attached). I was told all the issue will be gone. During the drop-off I told the service specialist that while I am driving the van sometime while increasing the speed, or just in the steady motion I do experience condition like stuck back and forth, and then move; the process repeat sometime. Twice the car lost power in the middle of the highway this year, and was helped by other driver to stop it and push it away from the highway, lucky due to constructions the traffic was very slow. When I took the car from the dealer after reprogramming I still have exactly the same problem, and now backseat door can be open manually only; dealer told me it is torque converter issue, when I google I found out that this is known issue (recall number 12v006000) for Ford free star 2004-2006 for torque converter replacement, when I call the dealer I was told yes that recall existed, but my VIN number was not listed for that recall hence they cannot help me. I cold Ford customer service, they gave me the same answer that since my VIN number was not listed they cannot help me but I should call the dealership and see what they can do to replace torque converter. At this time I left the van to the dealership but they are doing nothing on it until I make a payment, I can¿t drive that vehicle very scary condition. What can I do to have my VIN number get included in the list for that recall? stuck issue has been there since I bought this van never thought aout it any help.

23 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2016

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Freestar. While driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle failed to accelerate. In addition, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle was able to stop, but failed to operate after the brake pedal was released. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed the vehicle was repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 12v006000 (power train) prior to purchasing the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 108,000.

24 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2016

Van just lost all power without any warning while driving down the interstate at 70 mph. After calling Ford I was informed that the recall for the torque converter was done in 2011 and now it looks like the same problem again.

25 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2015

My van suddenly went out of gear and the van lurched forward, while driving at about 35 mph. Thankfully we were in town, and not going a faster speed or on a major hwy! after coasting to a safe place, we finally managed to get it to go back into gear for a short time. After several attempts, we managed to get it home. It refuses to go into gear now and has been parked since then. I know there has been a recall on the torque converter for this make and model, and those customers have experianced the exact same symptoms as my van. This is obviously a problem with a lot more vans than originally thought and the recall needs to be extended to other VIN #s, including mine.

26 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2015

My car has spent 10 days at Ford to be serviced after having the safety recall service for the torque converter performed. The vehicle was behaving unpredictably, sometimes stalling out while idled, stalling out while in motion, sometimes idling with high or low rpms. The dealership took it back in to check the torque converter, they then said it wasn't the torque converter but the throttle body, they then cleaned that and said it's not the throttle body, it's the pcm. The pcm is taking on water from a flawed design of the above pcm where water is retained and eventually leaks on to the connector. This of course is not covered by Ford, and can cost up to $1200 to replace. This issue creates a number of different symptoms making it hard to identify the origin of the problem. Causing extended stays for maintenance. This should be rectified by Ford and not it's customers as there's no way this flaw can be caused by user error, it's a design flaw that should not exist.

27 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2015

Following the safety recall replacement of my 2004 Ford Freestar's torque converter my van lost all power while approaching an intersection going approximately 15mph. The vehicle was in motion and there were no indications of a problem (no lights on the dashboard, no odd noises, nothing). The vehicle just lost all power and came to a stop, luckily I was just shy of the cross-traffic. There are major problems with the transmission of this vehicle if it dies after getting the problem part, the torque converter, replaced as a result of a safety recall. Upon bringing it back to a Ford dealership to have the replacement part reinspected, I was told there are no codes being throw by the computer and the car is fine. Clearly the car is not fine if it's stalling out without warning while in motion. I'm very frustrated.

28 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2015

Torque converter replaced a year ago complete transmission failure almost went into a ditch trying to get it off the road no problem with transmission until I had Ford replace torque converter due to recall.

29 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2015

I had the torque converter recall performed about 8 months ago. While driving today, the torque converter failed. Ford dealerships replaced torque converters with faulty torque converters.

30 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Ford Freestar. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the vehicle would suddenly shut off. The vehicle was examined by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the torque converter was not faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. 31 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2015

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Freestar. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously serviced per NHTSA campaign number: 12v006000 (power train). While driving 30 mph, the vehicle lost power to the drive train. The vehicle was taken to eide Ford (800 e bismarck expy, bismarck, nd 58504) where it was diagnosed that the torque converter failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and declined to assist. The approximate failure mileage was 130,999.

32 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2015

When driving down the road as vehicle appears to shift from drive to over drive there is a shudder in the transmission. I have had vehicle check by a professional repair facility and been advised that the torque converter is bad. This vehicle does not fall under the recall, although I am having the same problem of the vehicles that were recalled. I am hoping that a revision can be done on this vehicle and all others like can be included in the recall.

33 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2015

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Freestar. While shifting from reverse to drive, the vehicle suddenly would not accelerate forward. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who indicated that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 12v006000 (power train) in 2012 for the same failure. The failure mileage was 135,928.

34 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2015

While driving on the freeway at 55 mph my vehicle lurched forward drastically and then stalled. I was able to get it to the side of the road coasting as I was in the outside lane. I could restart the car but only go 50-100 feet and it would stall again. I managed to get it off the road into a parking lot and found out the car wouldn't go into reverse. Although I could go forward. I am now being told that there was a torque converter recall for this year and make of car but not for my vehicle. I am being told the transmission will need rebuilt and be at a cost of 3000-3900 dollars. The car has approx. 102,000 miles on it. I was told by the transmission shop this is a common problem with this car even if they are repaired they tend to have problems again. It should be noted that it had snowed a large volume that day and there was a lot of water on the roadway.

35 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2015

Stopped at a stop sign and the van would not move. No gears worked. Couple days later, it drove fine. Couple days later no gears again. (and the torque converter was replaced under recall in 2012) now won't start and dashboard goes crazy after the key is out. With all the transmission problems and the wet pcm problems, I can't believe Ford doesn't have to recall these van because of the pcm!! this vehicle is a hazard to drive.
