All gauges lost power on & off each day, until today shut off for good (4-10-15). Also, at first (Dec. 2014) lost lights on inside of vehicle & did not effect outside lights until recently when outside also out. Has happened multiple times since first noticed. At first signal lights worked, but not now. Also a/c & radio do not work, plus the doors, windows do not open or close as well. The only door which opens is the drivers door with the key. Sometimes everything comes on & off by itself, (even cd player & radio, but now does not work), when I get in the car to start it. I checked my battery which was still good, and put in a new alternator this month (April), but the problem has been going on since last December. At first in Dec. The mechanic said he had to reset something, and then it was ok for a couple of months until February, 2015. Then it began to start up again, and I replaced the alternator last month (March). The noise & problems were happening at random, crackling noise uner the dashborad and under the drivers side under the sterring wheel, but then it has occurred more often. As of today 4-10-15 they are all happening, so I can not drive the van now due to the lose of the signals, lights, and not being able to open the doors or wndows. I checked under the sterring wheel and saw a tiny light going on & off and then it went off and so did everything else which was working before. The noise was around that light area near a black box. What is causing this? I feel it is dangerous to drive the van.
Don't have my VIN on me to share at this time. Also, the specific electrical problem is the pcm. On 4/4/2013, I was driving down the highway at about 45-50 mph when my car 'died'. I lost all power - no brakes, steering, etc. Fortunately, none of my kids were in the car. The car was towed to the dealership that night. They said it was my cam sensor. Less than 5 days after picking up the car on 4/9 th car acted up again. (they kept the car for a recall unrelated to this). On 4/14 I was driving down the highway at about 70 mph when the car started to jerk. Luckily I was close to home this time and after stopping several times was able to get the car in the driveway. My youngest daughter was in the car with me who is now afraid to get back in the car. The next morning I had it towed back to the dealership. A few days later they said it was my alternator. I was told they would credit me back the money I put out for the cam sensor. They put in the new alternator and test drove the car. Guess what - the car still jerked. The shop manager took it home with a computer hooked up to it. They could not find anything. They then put a call into the Ford hotline. A week later they tell me it is the pcm. It got wet. Over $400 to fix and that is with a used part. Over $1200 if it is new. A quick internet search finds the pcm is a common issue with the Freestar. Not sure when it will be recalled. I hope no one gets seriously injured before these complaints are taken seriously. I will say this is the last Ford I will buy. I am not sure how to explain to my kids that the car is safe to drive when I don't believe it myself. I guess I will keep my receipt for when this is recalled so I can be reimbursed.
Failed component #1: 8/9/10 - transmission failed - replaced transmission - $1,732. 32, failed component #2: 10/9/10 - remove and replace alternator - $442. 00. Failed on route 95 south CT headed to NJ, battery failed, alternator failed, power surge, power lost, coasted to a safe place off of exit where I was stranded with 2 children late at night. Had to get towed and fixed, stayed over night in seedy part of city. Failed component #3: 11/1/10 - remove and replace alternator - $297. 68, failed on route 113 again, power surge and power failed, alternator died, lost power and managed to get home a few miles down the road, had to get towed to shop, new battery failed as well. Had it in the shop for almost 2 weeks total.
Purchased a 2005 Ford Freestar March 2009. Has suffered from repeated loss of motive power with the computer often recording "no codes" per the dealer. Has been to the dealer atmultiple times for various supposed repairs including new computer, alternator, etc. , but the problem continues. The vehicle shuts off unexpectedly while driving causing a loss of power steering and brake control. This has occurred at least 8 times in the last 12 months and we left the vehicle at the dealer from 9/10/09 through 11/12/09 and again from 11/15/09(?) through 2/5/2010 due to our concerns about the vehicle's safety. On 2/10/2010 an accident occurred where the vehicle lost power, the road turned and the driver was unable to make the turn or brake adequately and hence ran off the road sustaining neck injuries.
