1 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2021

Stationary and in motion my awd malfunction light will come on, it does this multiple times a day, I just got this Ford the other day, nobody knows what the issue is, but I've seen thousands of other people have this issue. That almost caused me an accident today in the snow. Not very happy about it, and I don't want it to happen again. It's been doing this since I got it. I'm lucky it's not totaled.

2 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2021

Just got the car and it stalled on me today, accelerated and shut off in the middle of the road. Alot going on iv read other people's comments about the Ford causing accidents I don't want that to happen to me I'm a new driver.

3 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2014

I was driving my infant son home from the hospital after cardiovascular surgery. It was a light drizzle following a period of heavy rain. The roads were wet but there was no standing water. Cars were braking in front of me to make a left hand turn. I applied my brakes, the pedal was up, but there were no brakes. The vehicle did not even begin to stop. I pushed them again and again and there was still no braking of the vehicle causing a rear end collision with the car in front of me who rear ended the car in front of him. Note: the airbags never deployed! I had to take my infant back to the hospital via ambulance to have him checked out because of the prior surgery. The dealership said the car did not throw any codes and that there was no way to test the anti-lock brakes and no way to prove that they failed. I am a very cautious driver, always leave plenty of space to stop between me and the cars in front of me. I have never had an accident or moving violation, and yet the response that I received from the dealership was "well the front ends are made to collapse in the event of an accident". . That is not the issue. The accident should never have happened because the vehicle should have stopped. There was more than enough space to stop, I was applying the brakes, and did so multiple times to try to get them to work (so obviously I had plenty of space to stop) and yet the car would not even slow down. A vehicle should stop when you apply the brakes, anti-lock mode or not! someone could have been killed and one of those people could have been my infant son!!!!!.

4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

* acceleration problems when parking or reversing at low speeds when the a/c is running on any fan level. - during high exterior temperatures when vehicle ac is on, vehicle drastically lunges forward if in drive - or backwards if in reverse. Research online states that this is a common problem among Ford vehicles, therefore if Ford does not act swiftly to correct this obvious safety defect in their manufacturing, I will contact my congressional/senate representatives. These vehicles transport children, and Ford should do the right thing and not ignore these problems like Chevrolet and Toyota did. "man-up" Ford!.

5 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2014

Twice in snow storms while creeping along at <5 mph and applying the brakes (gently pumping) to negotiate a hill the brake pedal became extremely hard to push and seemed non functional. I believe this is repeatable and is somehow related to low speed on a down grade while pumping the brakes. I could not discern whether the engine idle was gaining but the vehicle was unstoppable until I reached the bottom of the grade. Once reaching the base of the hill the problem mysteriously goes away. A mechanic could not find anything wrong with the physical brakes. I believe it is traction and anti-lock brake control related.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2012

Was coming up to a stop light and the car started to accelerate. When I put on brakes, it accelerated more. To avoid hitting 3 cars in front of me, I went over a curb, up a hill and over and embankment. The car finally stopped in the middle of a side street. The impact of coming off the embankment blew 2 tires and totaled out the bottom of my car. The insurance company has totaled the car. As far as the speed of the car, I was doing 35 until the acceleration failed and when I put on the brakes, it went faster. I read on your website where Ford was having problems with lunging and this sounds like what happened with my car. Especially when I read from others that have posted there problems with this. I do believe that Ford needs to do a recall before someone gets hurt bad. I did go to the er to get checked out but besides seat belt burn, I was fine.

7 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

When driving at low speeds (5-10 mph), whether in forward or reverse, the car will lunge forward (or backward if in reverse). This has happened at least 10 times over the last 4 days, resulting in several near-miss accidents with vehicles, as well as almost hitting a pedestrian multiple times. The engine lunging has only occurred at low speeds, mostly when the temperatures are above 85 degrees. The engine lunging occurs when I'm driving at low speeds, such as when I'm backing out of a parking spot, or driving in traffic in which I'm driving at a low speed. The time before last, it was in the school parking lot when I was picking up my son from summer school. Both these times, a pedestrian was almost hit when the car lunged forward. Today, I was in traffic in the walmart parking lot when the car lunged forward, almost causing me to hit the car in front of me. When this happens, the check engine symbol lights on the dashboard, as well as the engine failsafe mode coming on. I have to turn the car completely off and back on to get these lights off.

8 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

We were backing up in a parking lot and the car accelerated to where we had to slam on the brakes, luckily no one was behind us or we could have caused an accident. It is lurching forward when we are at slow speeds for no reason, I am worried that if someone is in front or back of us we will hit them. This happened about 2 summers ago but a part was replaced and it had not been a problem again until now. I have noticed that it becomes an issue on hot days when my a/c is on.

9 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

1. Pulling into parking space, vehicle surged forward, steering was turned sharply at the time and foot on brake 2. Pulling in garage and vehicle surged while foot on brake.

10 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2012

This has been occuring since the car was purchased in 2005. In hot days when the ac is on the car lunges forwards or backwards. It just depends if you have it in drive or reverse. When sitting at a red light or stop sign the car's rpms go high for a minute then the car slows down and stops. There has been times where it lunges forwards so hard it almost hits the car or whatever is in front of you. Ford needs to fix this problem before a death results. If you are aware of this problem and Ford is too then why is nothing being done!!!! ## VIN failed ## Ford Freestyle 2005 ##.

11 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2012

Our Ford Freestyle will randomly surge backward/forward at a high rate of speed when going from park to reverse, or going from reverse to drive, or going from park to drive. This has caused my wife to almost hit several cars. It will also surge forward when sitting at a stop sign or red light. This has caused us to have to slam on our breaks several times to avoid a accident. There needs to be a recall on this vehicle before someone is injured or killed because of Ford's failure.

12 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2012

I was backing up out of a parking spot very slowly and the car surged backward about a foot, I was able to depress the brake and stop it. The fail safe mode then engaged. I turned the car off and sat for a couple minutes and restarted it and started backing out. The same thing happened again, the surge backward and the failsafe mode engaged. I once again stopped and turned off the engine and sat for about 15 minutes. When I restarted the car the check engine light was on but I was able to back out of the parking space all right, and the failsafe mode did not come back on. It was an extremely hot 100 degrees day, and the a/c was on. This is extremely scary. I could have hit someone.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2012

1. ) while putting car in reverse, with foot on brake the car lunges backward with significant force & speed. 2. ) while sitting with 'drive' engaged & foot on brake car will lunge in the same manner. If a/c or heat is on it is significantly worse & more dangerous!! this happens very unexpectedly & surges/lunges quite a distance before vehicle is able to be stopped. Sometimes the vehicle will completely shut itself off with some type of a fail safe error displayed. This problem occurs multiple times daily on a daily basis! I am scared to death to back out of any parking space with the fear of hitting a pedestrian! as well as this issue, while driving at any speed, the vehicle acts like it will stall. Meaning that you may be driving anywhere from 20-60mph & it hesitates - not only when accelerating, but when at a consistent speed as well. This too increases with heating & cooling on. All incidents could cause great harm!.

14 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2012

Car lunged forward when in drive thru. Foot was on the brake and air condtioning was running, car seemed to have a surge of power causing the car to lung forward and then car cut off. This happen before in August of 2008 and the Ford dealership said it was the throttle body. Dealership replaced throttle body and motor on ac unit, but it is still happening. Dealership and Ford consumer care was contacted, but they refuse to acknowledge problem or fix it. The problem has also affected the transmission. Transmission needed only a new in put shaft, but Ford failed to tell customers that they closed their plant that makes the parts for Freestyle. No input shaft could be found, so had to pay for a whole new transmission for $6000. 00. Again Ford was contacted, could only say OH well.

15 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2012

My car started lunging when moving at slow speeds, and I'd have to jam on brakes to keep it from hitting another car, building, etc. Happens primarily when a/c is on also. Loses power on acceleration, but lunges when applying slight gas in both reverse and forward. Scary beyond belief. I have a heart condition, and nearly fainted when it happened last time, at an intersection with wild traffic, and I had to jam the brakes to keep the car from going into traffic. Seen enough similar reports online that my next stop will be news media. Please help us!.

16 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2012

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that whenever the brake was released, the vehicle would lunge forward abnormally. The vehicle was taken to an auto mechanic who advised that they were unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 88,000 and the current mileage was 89,000.

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2012

The car lunges forward. It happen in forward or reverse gear. Ac in on position. It has happen when car starts moving or while it is moving at lower speeds. No accidents, just close calls. In driveways, drive thru's. Moving on streets and parking lots. Having to apply brakes harder. Car stalls at hotter outside temperatures.

18 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2011

Scary car. A couple of times when car is idle/foot on brake the car would surge forward on its own. This is creepy. First time happened when parking in front of a wall. Luckily, I had enough room to not hit the front. I just came home and rolled into parking space. My foot was still on the brake but out of nowhere it just went by itself so my natural response was to brake really hard. It slowed the surging, but dang it! it scared the begezzy out of me. If I wasn't alert, I think that wall would damage the front car. . . Let alone hit someone(s) if they are in front of this idle car. Second time when my husband rolled into the mall's parking space and it did it too. I sat next to him and it was just freaky weird. It happened 3 other times also. Ford better recall on this problem seeing how many complaints are posted online already. I had to look it up online and found a major car magazine stated it was a major problem. If they don't do anything about this, I think I will have to switch to another car maker. This Ford Freestyle 2005 awd limited is a scary car: air conditioner and idle/foot on brake = surging or lunging forward.

19 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2011

Vehicle lurching when idling or low speeds. Repeated excessive wear on rear brakes. Front brakes working properly.

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Ford free style. The contact was driving 20 mph when the wrench failure light illuminated and the engine stalled. The vehicle also experienced abnormally high rpms prior to the failure. The contact also stated that on a separate occasion the brakes were depressed but the vehicle failed to stop. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where the mechanic confirmed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileages were 120,000.

21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2011

Rear brakes on my 2005 Ford Freestyle have gone out again. Have approx. 100,000 miles on the car and this is the 2nd time I have had to replace, not to mention that I have had to replace the tires 5 times on this car. It is an odd size tire so it is hard to find decent ones for the snow and they can be really expensive if you do find them.

22 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2010

I bought my 2005 Ford Freestyle new in January 2006. By November 2008 the rear brakes began grinding. I had them replaced at my local Ford dealership; it was still under the 3 year/ 36,000 miles warranty. Now, a year and a half later the brakes are grinding again and need to be replaced. The vehicle has less than 30,000 miles on it but is no longer covered under the 3 year warranty. The brakes shouldn't have to be replaced this often. However, in July 2007 we received a letter from Ford stating that the rear brakes would be covered under the original 3 year/ 36,000 miles warranty. This raises a red flag that Ford knew about the brake issues but did nothing about it, and still hasn't done anything.

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

My left rear brake heats up and smokes. I have taken rides of less then 10 miles. I will be replacing the brake shoes for the 4th time. I have about 50,000 miles on the car. I'm afraid that on a long trip the wheel will lock up and cause an accident. 2005 Ford Freestyle VIN#[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestyle. While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal but noticed the brakes would not respond. The contact continued to pump the brake pedal applying excessive pressure until the brakes responded. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostics where the mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure, but suggested having the brakes replaced. The brakes were replaced three times but to no avail. The contact stated there was a manufacturer recall but the vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 300. Updated 03/14/lj updated 03/3/12.

25 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2008

While driving in heavy traffic with snow and slushy streets, the traffic ahead of me stopped. I applied the brakes and the abs activated for about 1 second and then I had no brakes at all. No matter how hard I pushed the brake pedal, there was no abs activity and no brakes. Fortunately I was only going about 5 mph. I struck the vehicle in front of me. It had no damage but I had a broken bumper cover ($1300 to repair). I took the vehicle to the dealer I bought it from to have the abs and brakes checked. They found nothing wrong. I wrote a letter to Ford, explaining what happened. They said they were forwarding my letter to their engineering department for evaluation. I have heard nothing from them yet.

26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

This Freestyle has surged several times since purchase. We replace a failed throttle body in 2010. Recently in shop in 9/11 for nonstart.

27 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2008

Brakes were going out, car wobbling back and forth, grinding sounds. This is the 4th time that this has occurred over the last 15 months. We have had to replace the brakes on the back twice now and the front twice, the rotors twice also.

28 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2008

Rear brakes replaced 3 times by dealer in less than 37,000 miles.

29 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2007

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that the rear brakes are grinded down to the rotor. Ford stated that this is a common failure among this type of vehicle and is not taking any corrective action. The rear brake rotors were also worn and needed to be replaced. The failure was noticed while driving 20 mph. The failure persists. The engine size was unknown. The current mileage is 18,000 and failure mileage was 17,500. Updated 06/08/07.

30 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2007

2005 Ford Freestyle rear brakes replaced at 15k in March of 07 per customer and TSB then one year later at 8k more down to yellow and Ford noted to watch. Year later in September 09 now 8k more brakes once again in red!.

31 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2007

I have more than one complaint. 1) shortly after buying my used 2005 Freestyle I would be driving both at higher and lower speeds and I would loose all control of the vehicle. It would not respond to gas or steering. It was like it was losing power but it was still running. I had several near misses when this would happen. I was lucky that when I bought my Freestyle it was "certified" and under warranty, otherwise the repairs would have cost me over $1200. My Ford dealer replaced the kind of sensor/brain as they called it. Has been working sense. 2) air compressor needs to be replaced now. I thought the a/c wasn't blowing cold enough, I finally told it to a repair shop I trust and he said he couldn't understand I had any cool air at all. 3) brakes, rear most of all, have been replaced several times. Way too soon and anytime it's wet they squeal like crazy. Guess I need to have them changed again. 4) transmission issues are starting now. I roughly have 90k miles and hoped this would be my last car for several more years. I hate to trade it in and start another car payment and let this car get back out to some other unsuspecting soul.

32 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2006

Rear brakes and rotors needed to be replaced at 31515 miles. There are numerous complaints on the internet regarding this issue.

33 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2006

I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle at 22,299 miles had to have rear brakes place on my car. Now at 36,450 12-26-2006 have the same rear brakes replace and head for a class action law suit against Ford & Ford dealer ship if they don't do something to correct this problem at there cost. A car does not wear brakes that fast with even a person with normal brake usage. If any person would like to be included in suite email at rlbrasfield@bellsouth. Net. I have it. I have heard the same explanations dealership put up. I am engineer out of auto industry and know when car is miss designed, hope no one get killed.

34 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2006

I took my Ford Freestyle to be serviced at 20k miles. I was told that my rear brakes were bad and needed to be replaced and that the rotors needed to be serviced due to the bad brakes. I have never heard of rear brakes going bad at 20k miles however the service manager at Ford had indicated that this seems to be a common problem. He also indicated that I will most likely need to replace my rear brakes every year. This seens completley ridiculous to me. I replaced the brakes and serviced the rotors but I feel the need for replacement of rear brakes yearly must be some sort of factory defect in the design of the brakes.

35 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2006

Rear end noise started about 13000 miles ( sounding like a plane engine when you hit 40 mph). Dealer said tires were worn replaced all four tires plus alignment-dealer paid for two. Noise continued. Dealer then replace ball joints and rear brakes at 14000. Noise is gone.
