Ford Freestyle owners have reported 15 problems related to exterior lighting (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Freestyle based on all problems reported for the Freestyle.
While I am driving down the road, it feels like the vehicle shuts off. I am still able to accelerate, steer and stop; however, the lights, heater and radio shut off and all of my gauges quit working. My dashboard says "check charging system" but the source of the issue has not been found. I have already replaced the starter (was making a clicking noise at times), battery and alternator. This has happened several times on different road types and varying speeds.

Vehicle sitting outside with tailgate open, no key in ignition when the right side front side passenger mirror emitted white smoke also a burnt electrical smell. The puddle light underneath the outside mirror on front passenger side melted the wires and blew fuse. Front windows no longer work as a result of blown fuse.

Problems started after the battery and alternator were changed back in November 2017. First, the battery light and check charging system went on right after the Ford dealer changed the battery and alternator. We were told that the electrical output was fine despite the warning light. Since then several alternators were changed by the dealer but the warning light remained and the dealer does not know how to fix this. Today while driving (streets and highway) the dashboard (instrument cluster) went off and on and all gauges went to zero and back on after a while during driving. There was a kick to the engine every time this happened. My backlights went crazy (including reverse lights) while driving forward on streets/highway. Turning lights were also affected. Other drivers alerted me today. This is a danger to us and others. I fear the engine could eventually get affected too. There are many posts online with identical issues and Ford does not appear to be willing or able to solve this.
While driving on a city street going 25 and while driving on the freeway going 55, the lights in cluster of guages went out. The wrench icon lights up and all power goes out to the guages. All needles drop. Checked the fuzes. Nothing blown. When this happens the a. C. Also stops blowing cold air.
Tl-the contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, all of the dashboard lights would not illuminate and that all of the gadges for fuel, speed and oil temperature stopped working. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 131,596. Ad.
I have a 2005 sel Freestyle with about 130k miles on it. This morning while driving to work with speed of 55mph all of a sudden the abs and awd lights came on and the message center displayed "check traction control" and "awd malfunction", then entire panel went dark (rpm, gas, oil, speed and odometer). I noticed that the gauges were making a ticking noise at that time as well. I pulled off the main hwy and shut car off, I then tried to restart the car. All of the gauges lit up again, but car would not start, acted like battery/alternator was shot. Had to get it towed home and was late to work. Not sure where to start to solve the issue, have seen too many posts with the same issues. I think that Ford needs to step up and take the appropriate steps to recall these vehicles before fatalities begin.
The passenger side puddle light under the mirror was smoking. I'd had the driver side door and trunk open for just about three minutes when someone passing by brought it to my attention that the right side mirror was smoking. You could smell plastic burning and feel the heat when you touched the mirror. After a period of time it stopped smoking. The following day July 3rd it happened again. I decided not drive the car for a couple of days rather than chancing any additional damage. I took the car to the Lincoln dealer on Monday where they cut the wire for the puddle light and showed me the damage to the unit. I was told that to repair this I would have to replace the entire mirror assembly at a cost of $500. 00. At this point I am undecided as to what I will do. Apparently this is a problem that Ford knows about, but I could not find any technical service bulletins. I did find numerous complaints about this particular problem with the puddle lights not just limited to the Freestyle.
While the car was in are garage and after opening door the puddle light on the right side mirror started smoking and sparking. Fire department was call and checked car after disconnecting battery. Puddle light has burn area and wiring to it was burnt. Fuse did not blow , light stopped burning after wires brock . Ford dealer says to replay light you have to replace whole mirror unit aprox cost $300.
My instrument panel started going out while I was driving down the highway one night and it caused my reverse lights to flash on and off. This is a problem that Ford knows about and it is a problem due to faulty solder joints on the back of the instrument panel, there is a TSB for this, but there is no recall on this why? this problem has also led to my transmission going out again, and Ford will do nothing about any of it. I am not the only one who has had this problem either there are tons of owners of this car that have had these issues. Ford needs to be held accountable for these issues that are a result of faulty manufacturing. We are a hard working family and we spent everything we had replacing the transmission in our car six months ago, and our warranty was up seven days before our transmission went out and now thanks to the faulty instrument panel doing whatever it was doing to the computer when it was cutting in and out it has tore my almost $4000. 00 transmission up and now I have no car to haul all of my children around in. I also contacted Ford via email and the response I got was save your receipts in case of a recall or a forgiveness program is started up.
My daughter had a wreck, she rear-ended a truck who ran into another vehicle. The airbag on my vehicle did not deploy although the seatbelt did lock up. There had been no warning light stating that there was anything wrong with the airbag. I have written to Ford about this malfunction but they just say there is no recall on the airbags. I told them that unfortunately no one will know if there is a problem until they have an accident. I feel this is a very unsafe part and needs investigation.
While driving to work all of a sudden the cluster lights in the instrument panel all went out and the speedometer, odometer, control temp, and gas gage all zeroed out and a wrench and air bag light came on. Then after about 10 minutes of driving everything starting working again and the two warning lights went off however, then the check engine light came on. I had a diagnostic done and the errors were all electrical. Have to take it in a few days to the Ford dealer and be charged a $90. 00 fee up front just for them to look at it and diagnose the problem. According to all the complaints it's been a very well known problem that Ford should have dealt with in a recall. Not just try to sweep it under the rug. I'm sure it's going to cost me an arm and a leg when they get done. I have always owned a Ford but now I think I'm going to make a switch to a Chrysler (since I do work there now) and I know I will be taken care of not just taken.
Summary: I was putting gag in my car, as I entered the car after fueling, I was talking to my mother for a moment, and as I was about to place the key in the ignition, there was black smoke coming from the passenger mirror. I got out and ran over, and saw flames. I ripped the black cover with the mirror off, saw that there was an electrical fire. Burning myself, I put the fire out in time to keep it from getting out of control. With the fire safly out, I saw that it was from the led courtesy light assembly at the bottom of the passenger side mirror. It was completly melted and burned. I removed the part, (as well as the one from the driver side for safe measure), and took them to my local Ford dealership so they could report it as a faulty part. The part is the wagner part 71077. According to the driver side (I could not read the passenger side to see if it has the same part number, or if it is different for right and left. ) the wire assembly, was burned near the base of the wires where they enter the assembly. Had I not been there to put out the fire, my car would have burnt to the ground!!! my hand is recovering at this time.
My 2006 Ford Freestyle first started to surge a couple of years after we got it(approx 2009) I reset it (as was explained in the manual) no major issue-I thought. It surged mostly while the ac was on,when it was hot and sometimes in reverse. After awhile I made allowances for this issue. My car was taken to the mechanic periodically for maintenance w/ no other (new or major mechanical) issues over the next few years. This past summer-2012(it has continued to surge(worse than before)) it also stalled a couple of times. My car was taken in and the throttle body was cleaned(I continued to experience problems all through the summer). It is now December and since September, my car has now stalled out 4 times! the most recent was the day after it was checked by a mechanic. The panel light for the drivetrain illuminates for awhile as well as the check engine light. My car just got a new alternator this past week and stalled on the freeway. All these years I have taken the advice of the forums while communicating with my mechanic to rectify the annoying and dangerous issues. I have not written before because I didn't take this problem as seriously as I should have. I have two young children and do not like stalling out on the streets. If this problem is so prevalent, why doesn't Ford just recall it and take accountability for their faulty car?!.
Our car was quite new. My daughters and I were in the car at a stop light. Someone was in front of me at the time and they were making a right hand turn. When I was slightly rolling forward I applied pressure to the brake and my car jumped or lunged forward-causing an accident with 4 kids and 2 adults involved. This is the first of many incidents with my car proactively moving.
