37 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 01/23/2014

As outlined in the class action lawsuit against Ford filed in California, our car experienced a "sudden and unexpected cvt transmissions failure". This resulted in a "sudden loss of forward propulsion and delayed acceleration" when merging onto a 40 mph street. The check engine light, the wrench light and the traction control dash lights came on and the engine experienced high rpm's with little forward movement. We took the problem to authorized Ford dealer who recommended repairs to the computer system costing us $2,000 even though it knew about the systemic transmission defect the Ford general manager stated in a phone call this morning (6 13 2014) his service department has had two other Ford Freestyles in their shop presenting the exact issues as our car. Following Ford protocol resulted in a "final" diagnosis of transmission failure. Point being, the local Ford dealership admittedly had prior knowledge of the cvt transmission failures yet did not relay that information to us at the onset of the systemic defect. The vehicle sits in our driveway. It is not safe to operate as we elected not to replace the defective cvt transmission at a quoted cost of $5,000 plus installation.

38 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 11/03/2013

In 2011 the throttle body failed on my 2005 Ford Freestyle. Ford recommended cleaning the throttle body and I had this done at a Ford dealer. Ford later extended the warranty on this part and reimbursed me. Following this, I found that the car occasionally lunged and the rpms would race. On November 3, 2013 the vehicle went into fail safe mode while driving at 45 mph. I was in heavy traffic and the entire engine stopped accelerating. I immediately hit my brakes and began to pull over. I restarted the vehicle and tried to make my way home at 15 mph. On Monday I made an appointment to have my car seen. I was told it was still covered by the extended warranty. On Tuesday the car again went into fail safe mode and shut down while driving. I was almost rear ended. On inspection, the dealer found that the throttle body was at fault. The part was faulty, and could not be cleaned to fix. It would have to be replaced, but Ford would not cover the cost (over $900) even though they know there is a problem with this part. When calling, I was told that they would only cover a one time cleaning. The cleaning did not fix the problem, and this is a massive safety issue. The car shuts down in traffic, leaving you vulnerable.

39 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 10/13/2013

We have had this car for over two years now. In those two years our instrument cluster has been replaced by the Ford dealer 4 times now. When driving the instrument cluster goes off and sends fuel shutoff codes to the fuel system which causes the vehicle to shake. Other items replaced were the onboard computer and alternator. The computer has been reprogrammed once, but no help. I have seen the technical release for this issue, but this has been a huge safety concern for my family. When the car starts to shake and you are doing 65/70 mph it could cause an accident.

40 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/04/2013

When it had the air condition on I kept jumping. I was scared it was going hit another car. Then I was on the expressway going 60 trying to pass a semi to get over and to get off and the car lost all power (shut off)omg panic. Started it up about 10 times before I got it back home.

41 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/17/2013

We were driving on the freeway (hwy 350) and the car just stalled out, again in traffic on take off the car stalled in the middle of traffic, once getting on I-70 it just stalled,. We took it to dick smith Ford here in raytown, missouri , johnny the service person said it was covered under extended warranty. So I left the car with them , and about 3:00 pm I got a call, johnny said the car was ready, he said they fixed the problem, but it is doing the same thing. This time it stopped with my wife in the heat of traffic, well I called johnny at the dealership again and he said it must be something else, well I had a test done, the test indicated it is the same problem the throttle body. I know the problem could not be a tune-up because I just spent $ 900. 00 for that at the same Ford place, yes over nine hundred dollars. Please advise what to do.

42 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/28/2013

After starting the 2007 Ford Freestyle it idols about 1000rpms. Upon putting it into drive or reverse when you lift off the brake the car will rev up the engine to about 2000rpms and speed forward or backward. This rev of the engine last approximately 1 second and then the car returns to normal idol speed. This creates a dangerous situation in which if you do not anticipate the acceleration you could have an accident.

43 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/24/2013

This car has a known issue, which I experienced, where carbon deposits in the throttle body cause it to surge or stall unexpectedly. The remedy as given by Ford is to have the throttle body cleaned and the computer (pcm) reprogrammed. Looking in to various forums for information on the topic, such as edmunds and Freestyle owner forums, many owners report the problem recurring after this fix had been implemented, mostly a few 10's of thousands of miles later. Others, who had their throttle bodies completely replaced, with a throttle of newer design, report no further issues at any reported range. I am asking why Ford is allowed to temporarily bandage a known safety issue, that is also known to recur after this fix has been implemented, rather that applying what seems to be a permanent safety fix, replacement of the throttle? the surging is bad enough that had I not experienced it previously, and been semi-anticipating it, I would have been pushed into an intersection and into traffic. Nonetheless, the car did move forward several feet. This was on my trip to the Ford dealership (24 June 2013) to have the prescribed fix applied. I do not believe a temporary fix, one that allows to problem to recur, is in the best interest of public safety, and that Ford should, instead, focus on a permanent fix to its safety issue. I would like to note, those who have had their throttles replaced state the new one is of a different design. For example: the new one is a non-heated body, vs the previous design which has a heated body, which is suspect to failure. The old throttle (5f9z-9e926-aa) vs the new ones (6f9z-9e926-a) are designated by the different parts numbers provided, further showing Ford's knowledge the old (heated) version of the throttle is, itself, causing the safety issue, and that their one-time fix is only temporary.

44 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/01/2013

When I have the car in park and am ready to reverse or drive forward, it seems like it wants to take off on its own before I even let go of the brake or give it gas. This can cause an accident to occur without me having an control over it. This is not safe!!.

45 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/07/2013

Car suddenly slowed to approximately 5 mph and then stopped. Accelerator stopped functioning. I waited for ten minutes, turned the engine on and limped home at 5 mph. This breakdown occurred after worked was performed at varsity Ford in ann arbor, michigan for this same problem. Dealer advised that the worked performed (cleaning the throttle body and reprograming the powertrain train module) did not work. After detailed discussions with the dealership, I was advised that I needed a complete replacement of the throttle body module at my expense. Why should I be held liable for the repair when Ford had already admitted that this was a known problem by calling it in for cleaning. This is certainly an issue for the NHTSA to act on. I think that the $882. 73 repair bill should be Ford's burden, not mine.

46 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/01/2013

Vehicle would surge and loose power at all speeds. At times when pressing the accelerator the car would not respond, then all of the sudden would surge, then would lose power. Took it to the dealer recently as they told me that there was a recall. Dealer cleaned the throttle body only. Now it's worse. I was driving back from the dealer and the car lost power, wrench light on, and left me in the middle lane of the highway. Shut the car off and on again and continue but with minimal power. Took it to a mechanic who told me that the throttle body is getting stuck. I see this is happened to a lot of Freestyle owner, especially from 2005-2007. Car is dangerous to drive as it's unpredictable when surges will happen.

47 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/25/2013

Had recall 12n03 performed due to surging, after repair car continued to surge when cold. When approaching stop car would not want to slow down, would put gear in neutral and tach would surge over 2000 rpm's, does this on a consistent basis. Continued to drive until car died while driving, got message for throttle body error, took to dealership and was informed that throttle body needs to be replaced at over $600. Recall repair done in April and car failed in July.

48 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

Vehicle lurches forward or backwards at idle speed.

49 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/20/2013

March of 2013 one of the 5 transmissions replaced . Lunging at low speeds , not shifting gears , dying, error codes wrench light comes on , this has occured with every incident which eventually lead to transmission failure everytime.

50 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 01/09/2013

On February 11th I had the recall done that reflashed computer and cleaned throttle body. The 12th and 13 it was unseasonably warm and the vehicle ran great. On the 14th the vehicle would not move at all. The temp was below 15 degrees. I could not drive my car for a month. When the temps went up into the 20's the car ran fine. I called the dealer to report the problem and was informed that the recall could only be completed once. On March 7th I cleaned the throttle body myself and found a ring of carbon around the butterfly. After cleaning the car was running good again. This was less than 400 miles after the recall had been completed. The symptoms of the jerking have gone away with the cleaning. The continuous problem seems to be the engine and malfunction light will come on and the vehicle reduces power and speed. Seems to be at lower temperatures. Yesterday it was 20 out and it did this. I have inspected the air and vacuum hoses to the throttle body and cannot find any loose, or broken. I have sprayed around throttle body gaskets while vehicle is running and can find no vacuum leaks. I don't think this is completely a throttle body issue. I believe the cvt transmission is to blame. In November I had the transmission fluids and sump filter changed. I did this because of the complaints of early transmission failure. Usually the failure occurs when vehicle is under load, ie going up hills etc. And appears to be temperature related.

51 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 01/02/2013

There is a recall on the thottle body on the engine toke to a Ford dealer had it repaired to what they wanted to fix afterwards it made matters worse now car will stall out when stopping or taking off or stopping to make turn almost been hit in the side a dozen times or more and almost rear ended same amount I feel that now it is become a true safety issue and talk to Ford dealer that did the work and they said only thing they can do is replace it at 700 dollars when it was there refix that made madders worst.

52 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 12/20/2012

12/20/12- veh idles high and wants to accelererate when braking as advised by a recall and Ford dealer stacher cleaned the throttle body and reprogramed the pcm. 53 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 10/24/2012

Engine sputter then failure. Then computer error states, fail safe engine mode. Diagnostic reveals throttle body failure. Common problem according to service department recall pending, why won't u act. Web full of this complaint.

54 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 10/03/2012

I was parked. I put the car in drive. As I started to take my foot off the brake, the car lunged forward. I pressed the brake hard to stop the surge. It scared me. The next day, it happened again, several times. In reverse and drive, I watched the rpms go up without my foot touching the throttle. This is scary and unacceptable!.

55 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 10/02/2012

For about 6 months prior to 10/02/12 I began to have intermittent problems with my Freestyle lunging forward in drive and your foot was on the brake, or lunging backwards at slow speeds in the same scenario. It had gotten so bad that troubles started bleeding over into the gears not catching when I put it in drive or reverse. It was throwing tons of codes, so I ended up having it towed to the dealership. They read the codes and said the throttle body needed to be replaced and hopefully after it's replaced the other codes will go away. So after a bill of $1038. The throttle body was fixed, or was it? my problems only continued, now we were into the cvt transmission. With my car still throwing tons of codes, it was determined that the tranny was bad. As I hung my head low, knowing what this involved, I kept trying to reset the codes and see how long she would go before she gave up again. 3 tows later and to a transmission shop, I ended up with a $3000 rebuilt transmission :-( the throttle body is a known issue, but yet Ford doesn't have a recall and is allowing its loyal customers to pay out the ying-yang for this thing. The tranny, the same thing, because it's a cvt 'very special and no one works on them' lol, tons of people have done the same thing and only had the option to replace the tranny. I am so upside down in my car and tried like hell to get into another one but to no avail, did I mention I only have 75,000 miles on my car?! this is a tragedy to me. I've been a loyal Ford owner for my entire life, and it saddens me to see so many customers that have the same car and are getting shafted because 'big money' doesn't want to address an obviously dangerous issue. Hoping that by stating my concerns and what I had to go through that something will be done. I have my receipts and that's great and all but I'm also out $4,000. . . In this economy, that sucks for me.

56 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/21/2012

When I stop the car at a traffic light or any stop, the car is accelerated. And have problems to run again. This is the second time I have to replaced the throttle body.

57 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/08/2012

Unintended acceleration-I stopped at traffic light and the engine stayed at a high rpm and did not drop to idle rpm. I was able to hold foot on brake until light turned green, the problem did not reoccur. I was not using cruise control. I took the car to my Ford dealer and they were unable to find anything wrong. This problem has not recurred but is very frightening when it occurs.

58 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/06/2012

I had left the vehicle idling in park while I went to check the mailbox. When I gotback I shifted into reverse and when I took my foot off the brake the vehicle lunged back almost striking a pedistrian I have complained about this before and I notice the investigation has been open since may 2011 I have also noticed there have been alot of complaints about this problem on the web. Just an fyi it seems to lunge when taking off in forward or reverse. I also noticed there is a class action suit against Ford for this problem in californa.

59 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

At a very low speed the throttle body stuck open, and the car lunged backwards. I had to slam on the breaks hard to not zoom out into the parking lot into a passing car. The check engine, "wrench" light came on and the lunging kept continuing both in forward and reverse for several seconds. Finally, it appeared to stop once I put the car in neutral, and I was able to back out of the parking space. After that, there was something definitely wrong with the throttle itself. I was unable to accelerate into traffic at the necessary rate. This is a reoccurring problem as there are hundreds if not thousands of reports and complaints about 2005-2006 Freestyles and 500s. I would hope that Ford would do the right thing and recall this part for the safety of their customers and everyone on the roadway.

60 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

For the past few months my car has been lunging forward or backward when going at a low speed. For example, going into or coming out of a parking space, in a drive thru line, or waiting at a traffic light. The problem seem worse when it is hot outside and/or the air is on. Yesterday the problem happen again, engine stalled and when I restarted the car the check engine light came on. I have had a few near misses with the problem, coming close to hitting a little girl in a parking lot and almost running into a car at a drive thru line just to name a couple. I remember hearing about the same problem last year and am very shocked to see that Ford is taking a chance with peoples lives like this, why has there not been a recall issued to fix the problem?.

61 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/30/2012

2006 Ford Freestyle at low speeds all of a sudden lunges both in reverse or in drive.

62 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/21/2012

Vehicle lunges or surges when at idle or low speeds in forward and reverse.

63 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/20/2012

Car lunges forward when at a stop but still on drive, brakes must be immediately applied or the car will take off by itself. Happens more when the shift is in the drive position but is being held by the brake for a period of time like in a line, a drive thru, or long traffic light. Very scary!.

64 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/11/2012

Backing from driveway into the street, car surged but was able to stop it when brake applied. At that point the vehicle stalled. Able to restart and continue without incident but warning "wrench" light was on indicating throttle / transmission fault was detected and service required. After restarting later that day no problems noticed and no warning light. This was the most severe case so far but had noticed some small surging in prior weeks both in reverse and drive when starting out both from cold start and from restart conditions. Further research suggests this is a well know throttle body problem for Ford Freestyle / 500 / montego models from 2005 / 2006 timeframe. Safety risk is significant, cannot let other family members or any less experienced operators drive this vehicle until the problem is addressed. Replacement or at least maintenance for this known faulty system should be provided at no charge by the manufacturer.

65 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/06/2012

Recently, my 2005 Ford Freestyle began lunging forward at slow speeds, and yesterday it did it twice in heavy traffic. I took it to big country Ford and they are trying to tell me it is my water-pump and air conditioner compressor. They also said my motor mount was broken, which was a common problem with the Freestyles and taurus x models. As I read online, the lunging problems seem to be common with these.

66 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/04/2012

I was going to pull out into a 4 lane road and was easing up to see better. . . Out of nowhere the car begins to accelerating. Once I got out into the road the car just cut off and I had to quickly restart it to avoid being hit. Then I turned in to chic fil a and was in the drive thru line. It was a pretty long line so we would ease up ever few minutes. The car jumps and starts to accelerating and I stomp on the brakes. The car was accelerating so much that the force of the brakes stopping the car made my tires squeal.

67 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/02/2012

Vehicle lunges when starting out from parked, lunges in forward gear, and in reverse gear. I see that there are many people with the same complaint this is a serious safety problem. I had this problem multiple times before and have nearly injured someone when he stepped behind my vehicle as I put it into reverse to back out of a parking place. The car accelerated by itself, fortunately I was able to stop. However the braking is not sufficient when backing it is a very dangerous problem. This deserves your immediate attention. I have been involved in automotive repair for 40+yrs. And assure you there is no excuse for Fords not handling this. They are well aware that this exists and are ignoring a serious hazard. Any Ford service will admit that the problem exists and that they do not have a recall. I see now that there is a redesign due to the problem. Your power can force them to rectify this problem, and save serious injury from this point on. I have no doubt that many accidents have occurred and someone has been injured seriously. 68 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/21/2012

Car lunges when brakes, traveling forward slowly or even when sitting still with brake applied. Also happens when changing from park to drive or reverse. Started erratically but problem is almost constant now. We have surmised from other postings this is a throttle body problem , however replacement seems to rectify issues temporarily but reappears.

69 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/20/2012

My 2007 Ford Freestyle will lunge unexpectedly in idle, with foot on the brake. Sometimes the vehicle will surge and shut down. This happens more with the air conditioning on. I will shut off the a/c, then restart the vehicle and drive without a/c.

70 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/19/2012

Car lunges forward and backward even with foot on the brake. Used to only do it with the air conditioning on but now will do it at any time. When speaking with Ford they claim they know nothing about this despite me reading them the 23 page letter between Ford and [xxx] (office of defect investigation).
